Smilely's Rambo ll

I know Rambo produced a lot of really nice dogs and shows up in a lot of pedigrees.
With that being said I've never heard much about the dog himself, how he operated or his strong or weak points?
What was he known for putting into his pups?
Any info would be great.
Thanks

Rambo's Flag (Jane) was breed twice. had 5 Grnitech and 2 nitech if I remember correctly. there were a few that never were put in the hunts that made great hounds. I tried buying 2 of them with no luck.
that might have been 4 Grnitech and 3 nitech. either way at least 7 of them titled out. most of these hounds reproduced nice hounds also. Grnitech Grch Hamlin's Davie Crocket HTX came from this cross. What he did in 2015 speaks for itself. Rambo's Flag (Jane), was a coon TREEING machine that hunted hard and fast. She was out of Rambo II. I'm glad that Larry and Lonnie made that cross. Jane was also on the reproducer's list.

With all that said, still nothing that answers the original question. I would love to hear some first hand knowledge on RAMBO 11 myself.

Rambo was from a good litter.
Rambo was a very good looking hound and he had all of the bells and whistles that a top hound is supposed to have.
Rambo had a good mouth and used it right however like many Slife’s Rambo dogs he didn’t have to run a track to get treed.
When Rambo was hunted with the conditions favorable for scent in the air currents he could tree coon all night like a cur dog and the next night he could do an outstanding job of running and treeing coon.
Rambo II was a balanced dog that displayed better than average ability along with above average looks, class and mouth that most demanding hunters of any breed would be happy with.

Thank you very much, that’s the kinda info l believe Dave was looking for, & I sure wish I could have seen him tree a few.

Never hunted with him but have a lot of Cl. Rv. Diamond Jim blood in my potlickers and of course, he was sired by Rambo II.
I see above average confirmation; tight hided dogs with good feet and legs. The offspring out of Jim and Curlee like to run with their heads up more like a running dog. While they can make good coondogs, they really like cats and if given the choice, would rather run a bobcat over a coon. I am not sure this is true with all of the Rambo II dogs but when crossed with my Upson Blue Boy II and heavy Smokey River Chief breeding that's seem to be what you get.
I use them on lion as well and they need to mature a little before they learn to slow down and work a bad track. Some of the pups are a year old or more before they really turn on so I would say that they are a little slow to start.
Adios,
Gary

Dave, I just inked a deal with Wild Television Network for the first and second quarters of 2021. We will be airing 13 episodes on Wild so you will be able to view if you have the channel. You can also download PursuitUP on any smart device and view many episodes over the last several year on demand.
Thanks and Adios,
Gary

Lonnie Smiley was my dad. I had quit hunting before Rambo and Levi started treeing. We were doing an apartment job in south Arkansas one winter while the White River Refuge was open. Dad had Rambo down there in the motel with him. He was going hunting so I told him I wanted to go and see what all the fuss was about. This would have been early 90's. Rambo had treed several already that night and we ran into 2 guys that were lost. They commented that we sure had a good lookin big mouthed hound. They asked what he was and dad told them that was his Rambo dog. These guys said so your Lonnie Smiley. They walked out with us and dad gave them a ride to their truck. We went ahead and went hunting in another spot. When we came out there were 15-16 people lined up on the road by where we were parked. The guys we had given the ride to went and got their buddies and they were all listening to Rambo do his thing. Again this was early 90's when the Refuge was a very big woods and coon everywhere. I'm not sure of the number now but I know it was over 20 trees we made that night and coon in every one of them.
I hunted Misty which was Rambo's mom a bunch when I was a kid. I loved that hound more than any dad had when I was growing up. I have heard dad say many times that she would tree more coon per acre than any hound he ever had.

Wish I could have been there

Sounds like a great night

Stringpopper thank you for the reply, sure sounds like a good hunt and an amazing melody.
Your dad always seemed to have a good looking dog that ended up in the winners circle but unfortunately up here there was never much of his blood and I actually know very little of his dogs.
What type of dog did your dad breed for and enjoy hunting?
I remember two sisters he had I believe they were Misti blue and Angel that I loved the looks of and always wanted a pup from but being a teenager they were way out of my reach, if only we could turn back time.

Yes Misty and Angel were two fine hounds. Dad was always trying to get a better dog no matter how good he had. He had big dreams of winning the UKC world hunt with one of his hounds. He gave it a good run a couple of times.
He liked one to move a track like they were trying to catch and when they got treed they better stay tell he pulled them off. He liked a good layup dog too. He wanted one to use its mouth on a track but not too much. He didn't want a silent dog but didn't want one running their head either. Sure wish he was still here to help me with mine. He could sit at the truck and know what a dog was doing better than most of us can tell when we are handling them even after he had had a couple of strokes. I started back hunting just so he could go listen to the dogs. He had Rambo IV when he had to move in with me after the second stroke.

Thank you for the info!
I wish he was still here as well.
So what are you hunting these days?
Sounds like he hunted and demanded some nice dogs, sure wish I could have gotten my hands on some of it back than.
What dog was favorite of them all?

I am hunting a female out of Gary Utchmans stuff. She has Rambo in the 3rd generation. I've got 2 pups 7 months old out of her and Big Country that I am starting now. Big Country has Rambo II on the top and his litter mate Levi on the bottom. Thought with all BC was doing and the blood he's carrying I had to get on that train.

Posted by DAVE H on 11-13-2020 04:53 PM:

Sounds good, I have some Big Country blood as well.
Hopefully they make some dogs your dad would have enjoyed hunting.

I never got to hunt with Rambo II but hunted and owned many out of him. Most were as described in earlier reply’s to this post. I remember pulling up at Lonnie’s house for the first time in the late 90’s to go hunting down the river in front of his house and three blue dogs laying in the driveway and two of them were Grand Nite Champions. Lonnie told me it cost just as much to feed a good looking dog as an ugly one, when his dog trees he wants it tree like he’s possessed and that Rambo II would run and catch a coyote. I also had the opportunity to hunt White River refuge with him and Jimmy Smallings. We treed over 20 coon the first night and 17 the second night. Good times!

Traye thanks for posting always nice to get info on dogs back in our pedigrees.
What are the traits you liked that kept you going back?
Feel free to pm or send me a number I can call you at if you prefer.

my father had a daughter of Rambo II GRNTCH GRCH Clements' Blue Spice, she was a littermate to Salin Sadie. If my memory is correct she produced 4 grand nites and 3 nite champions, she produced titled puppies with every male she was bred to.

This tid bit of information is all well and good, but I think it has been forgotten to mention he was also the sire to the only $kc platinum champion bluetick female ever, and $kc hall of fame member Hat Creek Little Bit. Ov.

Actually if you look further back in Country's pedigree, you will see more of the same cross.

Rambo II was Sailin Sadie's sire on the top side

On the bottom side, my Sadie female was a sister to Rambo II
Levi was a brother to Rambo II
Sky was out of Little Bit who was also sired by Rambo II and out of Heather

The Slife's Rambo x Misti Blue cross is in there 4 times

I considered Lonnie a friend and had much respect for his knowledge of hounds and breeding decisions.

I made two crosses on Slife's Rambo myself. There was a dog from each litter that made the final four of a world hunt. Good stock of dogs!
