Need some training advice.
This fall I bought a green started young dog and I've hunted his wheels off, almost exclusively alone. He's about 17 months old now, has a huge mouth, hunts about right, trees alot of coons and is a nice treedog.
Here's his fault. When I hunt him with another dog and he gets treed first, he's liable to just get down and leave if something covers him. He'll be in the vicinity, maybe trying to trail around or sometimes he'll just go on. And he's done this with a couple different dogs, neither of which are ill in any way.
Unless he was eaten up or whipped around on before I got him, I have no idea why he does this. And I'd sure appreciate any suggestions on how to get him out of it.
Is this different if you hunt him with only females? If it's not I'd catch him up and tie him back, shoot the Coons out and let him watch the other dogs get the reward.... Do not let him get the fur. Do this four or five times when he leaves, you may see a difference.

Maybe try and stage the situation so you have control and make him stay when the other dog shows up
