Distemper in Northern Ohio

How many of u finding dead coon ? I have seen 5 the last 2 times out, laying at bottom of dens, outside holes. Just hunting a pup and have not had many hot tracks and what coon I have killed are unusually small like late litter.

We are not that far apart and out coon population is not near what it was a few years ago. Could be the same thing

Distemper??

In October we had several sick coon wondering around during the day. The ones I watched were dead with in 24 hours. 2 weeks ago my fur buyer call and we discussed the sick situation. He said they were getting some in with yellow fat. So definitely there is some type of illness in our coon.

I normally harvest 60 plus a season. I have 6 this season so far. Have run several to den trees, groundhog holes, and outlet tile. But that is a every year thing. Also let me add that once in the last 5 years I have hunted over 2 mile from my house. So yea coon population is way down here.

Yellow fat can be a sign of hepatitis which is not overly concerning in coon but felines

Stark county here

Hunted quite a bit this year. Tracks are hard to come by in alot of woods. Hunted with buddy last Tuesday. Big woods. Treed 1, then dogs Hunted 1,000 yards big circle, not another bark. They Hunted 2 hours. Coon used to be plentiful, but have only killed 14 this year so far.
That might the reason.

I suspect it is some kind of tick borne issue. Don’t have any type of science to back it up, we have a lot more ticks then we did 5-7 years ago. Asmuch as it effects domestic animals and People , it surely does something to wildlife. JMO

I'm in crawford co. I've hunted all yr 3 to 4 nights a week with a young dog that turned a yr old in Aug. The coon look great, big, healthy and plentiful. June was our best month you couldn't walk out the door without tripping over a coon. Then it got really dry as the crops came on and things got tough with all the vegetation. All of my swamps are still bone dry. Even Killdeer plains is dry this yr, I haven't wadded in water yet. Since about oct. it's been hit and miss on good running tracks. Last month the best nights were from 2 or 3 in the morning till 7am right before rain was moving in. This month has been mostly layup coon early with pockets of coon moving in the morning. It seems to flux based on how many cold frosty nights in a row we have. We see sickness here when we have really wet years and more beans than corn. This yr was dry and corn everywhere in fact there is still corn standing.

Cheyenne, I hunted the Muck game lands last weekend. I didn't see anything sick over there.

Coon Population

Here too in SE Ohio it seems our raccoon population is down. Not sure of the reason. My buddys have noticed this as well and some of the speculation is being geared toward the tick disease that has been killing the deer is also killing the raccoon. No science to back this up either. Mere speculation at this point as to why tracks are harder to come by.

Might be a good time to attend ODNR meetings and make them aware of our lowering numbers. I doubt they will show much sympathy, as they would like to reduce numbers without using the hound hunter to do so anyway.

Every wildlife officer I have spoken with admittedly addresses to coon population to be at Nusicience levels, but refuse to extend our harvest season beyond Jan 31st. All they ever encourage me to do is get politically connected like the trappers are.

sick coons

I'm in N W Ohio, been running some good tracks with some good looking coons at the end. Did find a few coon dead in the woods that looked sick but what I've noticed most this year is not seeing many "hanging out" as i'm going to the dog and I do some muskrat trapping, last year I couldn't keep the coons outa my rat traps this year hard to find their tracks . Gonna dump a dog tonight 10 degrees 10 mph wind breeding season should run one. stay safe everyone!

Posted by TN Quick Check on 01-21-2024 11:41 AM:

Still seeing nothing but healthy coon, plenty of good tracks when they are moving. The nights they aren't and were making dens I'm seeing nice "roads" to and from the dens.

I know while back you see coon all over while driving but now only here and there
