Walkers fit the scorecard better is all.
To get your feet wet and hunting with kids (guessing young ones who have to get up in the morning for school), get yourself a border collie. They are smart, have a good nose and they will tree both raccoon and squirrels. Also make great family pets.
Now if you only want a "hound" breed, hunt with the hound a few nights before you buy. They can look awful or awful good any given night. Best also if you can hunt with the parents if you're buying a pup. Always remember if you don't know the hound, you better know the man. Don't get "paper" blind, you are hunting "the hound" not their papers. Most of the best hounds I have hunted with came from PR parents and I hunted with some GrNites I was so happy that they didn't eat my feed.
There are nice hounds in all breeds that will do what you want and your family will enjoy for many years. Just be sure to do your homework first.
I have come to realize that the competition hound is like a Nascar "team". If the car (hound) isn't the best in the race, you better have a good driver/crew chief (handler) to make up the difference. As Dale Earnhart said, "The winner ani't the one with the fastest car. It's the one who refuses to lose."
Good luck and I hope the "kiddo's" enjoy this sport for a long time.
