I think the policy has had some small but very necessary changes.

So this has been a long time coming. USDA/CDC had a discussion period on this starting last year I think.

This is all due to the rescues who were falsifying documents to bring in dogs from foreign countries--you can thank them for this. When USDA added additional requirements but left some openings for exceptions for breeders, rescues again used those loopholes and lied on paperwork as to the purpose of the puppies and dogs coming in. Saying they weren't for resale but private show homes.

CDC has now stepped in and that's because of the # of dogs brought in on false paperwork from countries that do not have rabies eradication programs or high rabies numbers as well as the # of dogs that came in with rabies!

The farm bill in congress should help fix some of the issues but lets hope that stuff gets passed.

Basically as of August 1st, all dogs imported into the country must be a minimum of 6 mos old, be microchipped and have a valid rabies certificate and health certificate. That's for dogs coming from approved countries. Lots more if it's one of the flagged countries.

If you go to Canada with your dog then try to return, you are importing a dog and must meet all the requirements.

There are more details on the CDC website and for those that go to Canada or Mexico --- the boarder officials are as clueless as the rest of us at this time. They have not had training or any information on what they are supposed to look for or what paperwork is needed. Be patient and double, triple and quadruple check your paperwork! Oh and do it early!

New Law.

As it stands for me to bring a dog into the USA from canada all I need is a healthy dog Micro chipped with the paper indicating the serial number of the chip and a written paper from the Vet that the dog is vaccinated prior to crossing the border.Only applies for Canadian residents showing hunting or holidays and bringing the same dog back. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR DOGS FROM CANADA:

Rabies Vaccination: Dogs without rabies vaccinations may still enter the U.S. as Canada is considered a 'low risk' country (provided the dog has not traveled to certain countries within the past six months).

Documentation and Microchip: Required documentation and a microchip are necessary.

Single Entry Validity: Without a rabies vaccination, the entry paperwork is valid for only a single entry into the U.S. for up to 30 days. Vaccinated dogs can enjoy significantly longer validity and multiple entries.Hope this clears up some questions.
