This whole week I have taken a look at the brief history of the present day UKC Tournament of Champions. It has been fun to share a brief overview of each year for you all and I hope you have enjoyed it.
I mentioned in year three, the numbers had stalled a little, that was not the case for year four. The number of qualified dogs jumped above the 1,400 mark for the first time, settling on 1,404. That was a 68 dog increase over the previous high. The number of entries continued a four year trend of increasing each year, getting up to 850 total entries which was up 46 dogs over the previous high.
Kirksville, Missouri and LaGrange, Indiana hosted Regions for the second straight year, with Conway, Arkansas and Mt. Gilead, Ohio being the only two locations that have hosted a Region in all four years of the event's history. With some shuffling in the south, Decatur, Tennessee and Manning, South Carolina both picked up a Region for the first time.
The Finals were in Greencastle, Indiana once again, and again, the event was a major success. With the help of a strong crop of guides and judges, that resulted in an impressive 4.4 raccoons scored per cast. The Final Cast was one of the most eye opening hunts I've had the pleasure of being apart of with some amazing dog work, but in the end the winner of the $50,000 check was NITECH 'PR' Maxed Out Mad Money who was owned by Travis Black and handled by Dustin Weed. Rounding out the Final Cast were NITECH 'PR' Freak of Nature owned by Walter Hickman and handled by Josh Craig, and NITECH 'PR' Heather Island Wipeout Z owned by Ike Rainey and Malcolm Rains and handled by Oliver Winn.
Remember, entries for this year's Tournament of Champions close on Monday, March 10th at midnight EST. See comments for more information.
