About this for sometime. In many way's I think Ike<Light Foot Ike> taught me more than any person. However I also considered that I bought Ike as a young dog already treeing game.
So I would say that I learned more from Bill Clark<Evansville In>
than any other Hounds-men I have hunted with. Bill and I have cussed and discussed hound's and each other for almost 30 years now.
As a young man Bill had a better understanding of what and why a hound was doing the things it was doing than anyone I have ever spoken with. Anyone can tell what a hound is doing but understanding Why and How is a whole different thing. Bill taught me to understand different types and styles of hounds and how that each can be effective. After years of trying and testing Bill's ideas for myself I have come up with a understanding of hounds that has served me well. I am pleased with the hounds that I am hunting today and Bill played a role in them.

That would be my dad , Jack Brooks.
He taught me to pay attention and listen to what the dogs were telling us.
As a teenager , it used to amaze me what he could tell about another persons dog the first time he hunted with them.

couldnt begin to pick one person - i learned alot from a lot of people and still learning---you cant learn anything really- until you do it yourself-- i have unlearned some of the stuff i learned a long time ago lol

i think i got a lot of real bad advice when i first got into hounds-most the people that gave me advice had some hounds way back when -

all great ones -- i didnt know then that dogs get better the longer they are dead-


- no way i could know that they werent speaking the gospel truth-

when i see somebody with some good hounds rite now-- i pay attention-


a guy told me yesterday that was a good thing i knew alot about hounds cause i didnt know nothin else-- lol - i couldnt argue with that -- i couldnt really get offended cause what else is there ? -- lol

The first real good Hound i owned was Duel CH Stoney Brook Blue Dapper Dan . we were both young and that was a long time ago we hunted hard and long. we ran trash together struck junk of the rig together treed alot of game together spent more hunting time with old Dan than I ever spent with any one person hunting. I think Old Dan taught me more than anyone . Stay Treed NHBLUDOG

Hellcat, i have learned about hounds and hunting with them,from several people which most of us most likely have.But you asked to keep it to one person.that one person for me was Al Womack.He had an incredible amount of information concerning hounds and hunting,also breeding.He was always willing to hunt and share this information,and also to have a good laugh to go along with it. Al is gone now,but not forgotten.

I only hunt coons, with the exception of an occasional large game animal{LOL}. I grew up with hounds, but Id like to say I used to be a dog chaser instead of coon hunter. I have been fortunate to have met a few people who have gone out of their way to help. Id have to say that Blaine Stout, Cory Thorson and Mike VanWick have been more than giving with thier time and experience, Im still learning but you couldn't ask for better hunting buddies.

Al was a wise man. I find it sad that Al so seldom get's the credit that he should. I spent many a night hunting with Al and I always enjoyed his company.

For me it was a man named George Leer. A simple man who lived on the Marmaton river in a shack surrounded by hounds. Coon hunting was his life.

I spent 10 years learning from him before he died.

The great Earl Cisco(for you plott guys he was the original owner of Cascade Drum) taught me so much.I think the best thing he ever taught me was it costs the same to feed a good one as it does a cull.He also taught me to not trade off the culls either.I've seen so many young hunters get discouraged and quit because someone did not cull one but stuck it back into some kid just starting.When Earl finally couldn't go to the woods anymore he called me up and gave not sold,me his whole pack.I miss ya Earl!!!

My Daddy, Larry Poe. He taught me everything I know. He helped me get prepared for competition hunts. I don't think there is many rules my dad don't know. He always can think of something to help a dog and figure out what is wrong. He has taught me some life lesson by coonhunting. He isn't at all easy on me, even when we draw out togather. Just about a month ago I drew out with him he thought my dog was treed so he put the stationary on me. There isn't many guys I know that would do that. He also is fair with everyone in a competition hunt. I've never once heard someone complain about my dad cheating them or using the score card to his advantage. Maybe that's why he gets it handed to him everywhere he goes. My dad is one of the most hardest hunters I've ever seen. My dad can tell me when a cross will work good and how it works good. He's taught me a lot about different dogs and breeding. For one instance he told me that to better the litter you have to find a hound that is strong in the places your hound is weak. My father is also very patient with me. My dad tries to better the English breed and coonhound world. He's always looking for ways to help and if anyone needs help my dad will be the first one to help them and try to solve whatever is wrong. This is why my dad has always been my hero and role model. I love my dad. I just wanted to say thanks dad for everything you've taught and will teach me.

I would have to give credit 2 ways here, one way two my uncle who drug me all over the united states coon hunting. He taught me the most about dogs and what was going on in the bush with them. He opened my eyes to help me think like a dog instead of putting human thoughts and emotions on my dogs. The second way I will give credit to my Dad for teaching me about game, he understood what an animal was going to do better than any one I have ever known. He is good with dogs two but I would say that his strong point would be to be able to go into an area that he has never hunted and do a little scouting then in short time have a good idea were game would cross ( mostly bear ) roads or were they were going to go to try and shake the dogs. I think bought skills are important and most good dog men have both sets of skills but these two men were really good at the particulars that I mentioned , I am lucky to have had these guys as teachers .
So thank Uncle Jess and Dad . Taylor Johnson
P.S. I would also have to give a thanks to a man named Big Joe Flannery . He put a lot of time into me as a little kid bear hunting, coon hunting , bobcat and coyote hunting. Every time I went with him he made it fun and you thought you were his best hunting buddy in the world. He is gone now and being at his funeral I learned of a lot of kids ( most of them men now ) that thought the same way I did about hunting with Big Joe . He made and trained a lot of hounds men. In my opinion his strong point was understanding game as well.

I would have to give my credit to Bill Clark. As a young man he taught me to be successful you had to be dedicated. One of the biggest things that Bill preached was if you had the real deal or thought you had, you needed to go to the hunts and prove it. Not sit behind a telephone or computer and talk about it. I always took that to heart. And he believed you bred the very best to the best and never breed females that could no tree. I don't know if he was right but I live by that standard. I always will try my best to keep this bloodline in the winning circle because that is what Bill wanted.

Terry, I would have to agree with you that Bill is a wise man that passed on some valuable knowledge, and hounds, that allowed others to benefit from his hard work. I have greatly valued what little conversation I have had with him, and I learned alot in a small amount of time.

I have learned a tremendous amout from Jess over the years and he has always said that in his earlier years Bill helped speed up his learning curve to enable him to get his hounds to where they are today. So I guess some of the credit for everything Jess has taught me about hounds, would have to go to Bill.

I feel very fortunate, as I'm sure you are, to be able to learn from hunters who understand hounds the way that these men do.

Unfortunately, I don't live where I can take my hounds to the nite hunts to evaluate their abilities to tree game. I have to hunt the game I have here in these Idaho mountains, and do my best to try to breed for a hound that works well under these conditions.

I guess I've tried to learn as much as possible from anyone I could. Then use their knowledge to help me move forward and achieve my own personal goals, rather than looking into the past and trying to reach someone else's ideas of success. It seems to be working so far.

After reading this back to myself, I think I will make it a point to call Bill on a more regular basis, and learn from him what I can while he's still around.
