When you guys are starting your young hounds,How and when do you let them "get in on one"? And how many times do you do that in a season? This is for what ever you are hunting.Bear,cat,hog.Heck,i'll throw in a coon just for the heck of it.

For our bloodline we start hauling them at eight months and when we dump the box if they wanna go they can if they don't thats ok too.By ten months they better be leaving the road pretty regular and making all but the longest races.by twelve months to fourteen months they better be making most all races.By two they better be making some kind of contribution.I hate the phrase hes a pretty good pack dog.I am not satisfied hunting a pack dog every dog I keep and everything I breed for should be able to figure out a loose on cats and bay a bear.I am not gonna BS and say everydog is a lead dog but thats what I am striving for/

I just take my pups hunting when they are old enough to get around good. If they have what it takes you will usually be able to tell early on. If one gets to a year old here and won't do anything..... they get culled. I have had the best luck with early starting pups making the cut, maybe because of the experience they get early on. If you are raising pups alone with no good broke dogs to run them with.... well that is a new post by itself. Another thing I do is make a pet out of them, get them handling well and they will make pleasurable hunting companions that are truely assets, not a liability. Take care. Mason

Depends on how old they are when training season starts. If they're big enough to keep up , at least for awhile , they get to go.

I believe some dogs start WAY younger than others . I had a pup her that would do **** till she was close to a year old . Some people would have culled her long ago . I have the feed and kennel space so I kept playing with her and NOW she is a decent dog . If a pup shows intrest then let it go with the other dogs for sure . If the pup is showing no intrest then keep the thing home . All it will do is screw up the dogs that do want to run . Jumping on the other dogs and playing like a pup is not good wether the pup is 6 months or 10 months . When it quits being a pup and WANTS to chase game then run the hair off it .
So I would say it depends on the pup for sure . I know of two plott pups (NOT MINE ) that were running and leading a bear pack in W.V. at 1 year old ...Those are rare in my opinion.
Or maybe I know nothing about training dogs LOL

I am going to agree with Travis's answer on that... Age when cat season rolls around has a lot to do with it. My pups were only 6 months old at the start of it last year. Had a pup make a couple bobcat races and they were hell on training devices, but we didn't push them hard at all. They were still young.. I can't stand a slow starting dog.. I don't want it if has to be feed until it is a year old before it shows interest... The bloodlines I am running is really early starters..

bear , cat , or coon it dont matter at about 4 1/2 -5 months of age they start riding in the truck and when the older ones are on the ground cleaning out it is down with them , now knowing that 8 out of 10 pups will not leave the road at that age i dont expect it , however i will walk them in to a tree on either of the animals i mentioned as long as it is a tree , i wont take them in on a bayed up bear that is asking for certain trouble , but if it is treed they go in with me and i keep doing that until the interest is getting the better of them and they end up leaving the road with the older dogs... happy hunting all

another thing I forgot to mention is I like them to tell me when they even want to start going in the pickup.When they come over and start putting their feet up on the tailgate as I'm loading dogs,that to me shows that they are showing the maturity to be curious about what the "Big Dogs" are going to do.Another trick we do is if I have a GOOOD acting young dog I will kennel or tie them next to my best dog.Some guys may think this will make them rely on that older dog but I haven't found that to be the case as I said I don't push them and make them HAVE to rely on an older dog.I like to think that with the right breeding I don't have to do much training just a little guidance to encouraging situations to go in the proper direction.
