What is the hunting like around the Lewisberg area. Seemed to be a lot of open country there when I went through it a few times the last couple of years? Looked like better bear country back towards Hinton and Athens. Any of y'all ever hunted in that neck of the woods? Pretty country, but looked like rough hunting.

hey i used to live in whitesville. i live in wharton now just across the mountain from where u prolly huntWhat area did you hunt round there? and as for lewisburg i hunt the national forest up there on 219 just out side of lewisburg in between there and white sulpher springs. not many roads and a lot of walking but more than plenty bears. we caught some nice ones up there last year but they r nothing like the size of the ones im used to catching around here my crew have caught a few from 400 to 550 but last year there was one killed just down the road from where we hunt that was 613 thats official weight they had to winch it in a tree and sit it in the truck lol there are lots of nice bear down here though

I live and hunt mainly in Kanawha County but am trying to go a little farther South into Boone. Just need to learn the country a little before I start dumping dogs. I do a lot of work down that way and have some friends that live down there but haven't had anybody show me around as of yet.

There is no hound season around Hinton or Athens. I don't think there are as many bears there as there are North of Lewisburg. Might be a few but not many. You either have to go East or North from there to find higher concentrations.

Yeah MRC-- a good haul from the house, but I liked the country up there though, especially up around Lewisberg. Pretty mountains, but also a good bit of open pasture land. Saw a lot of deer!

The area back around Hinton looked to be a lot more forested and a bit more broken country, but again, I was just passin through and making assumptions from the road.

The area around Lewisberg and parts of Southwestern Virginia are some of the best looking country I've seen.

From the country & game I saw, the stores I went through, and the folks I spoke to, it sure seems like the people in West Virginia love their hunting & fishing and do a better job of managing their critters so as to have more game to hunt than we do in similar country down here in western North Carolina. Just an impression I got...

athens & hinton

well the coon hunting alright deer hunting would be wonderful
if you can get permission from the land owners, but good luck!!
10 15 years ago anyone would let you hunt, not today!!
i live about 20 min-from athens 40 from hinton. athens is all private land, hinton has some state land to hunt on. but, a mile
straight up, and a mile straight down with cliffs in between!!
no big game hunting with dogs in mercer, mcdowell co. several
more countys no bear hunting with dogs. mcdowell co is loaded
with bear, bobcats.
