Just wondering how many of you coonhunt and bearhunt the same dogs

I have a 1.5 yr old pup that I bought mainly for coonhunting but I have been into bearhunting for many years , and never really coonhuntin. I would like to see what he would do on bear cuz he goes back to some good bloodlines but I was wondering if you have any trouble when your just wanting to go coonhuntin about getting off on a bear. I know that it really doesnt matter if you have a straight coon dog and it has the will to run a bear its gonna take a bear track. We,re I mainly live I dont have to worry about him running a bear but when I go back to WV I have to worry about him hitting a bear when Im coonhuntin. How many thinks its better for them to run both bear and coons

i start some pups on coon--really gives them a head start--
if my older dogs tree one i treat it like any other trash-

i have hunted with guys that bear hunted their coondogs - they say its no big deal if dogs run a coon-- but it can be a real pain for me-- waste a couple hours on coon and i mite not get a bear track that day -

i would love to have a dog that would run coon at nite and bear in daytime--

i had a bnt female- was a nt ch - and a pretty good cat dog that would run rabbit - never run a rabbit at nite -- she came that way-- i dont know how you teach that - lol

We run ours on both plus Bobcat but in our area you can almost draw a line along the Mountain and the bear are above and the coon are below the line except when the the corn is ready then we get afew Bear below the line but not often enough to hurt the coon hunting.. I find its easier to Free Cast the hounds when Bear hunting and you can them to (most of the time) run bear stright. Bobcat we run durring the end of Jan. thru Feb. when the snow comes a look for track before releasing the hounds.
I often dbl check bear strikes by driving about 1/2 mile down the road then call for someone to come thru and check the Strike to make sure its a Bear.. Here in Va. its tough on a stright Bear Only Hound, Our run season opens next week on Aug. 11th and you can run till Sept 23rd. Then nothing till Mid-Late Dec. when Kill season opens. West of the Blueridge Mountains you can not use Hounds for anything durring Deer Season execpt Coon then you risk lossing a hound if you can't get them in. The Deer Hunters will Shoot them..

i prefer mine to run all 4 bear bobs coon and cougar if i had a dog that only ran one thing i would have to get rid of it. i refuse to feed a dog that i have to leave home , because i am bear hunting, or cat hunting. but there is a positive side to it, if you have a dog that only runs lets say strictly cats , but you wish to bear hunt in a area that is prodominently covered up in both then you take that dog along with you , that way you know. if the bear dogs strike but that one cowers down or dont strike , pretty safe bet it is not a cat and you can go ahead and turn loose on your bear that you had just struck. providing that these are broke dogs we are speaking about.... Happy hunting

Been hunting the same dogs for quite some time. They seem to know the difference between daylight and dark.

Thats ok Bob,but here in the summer we run bear late evening into the nite. Years ago you had bear country and coon country. Then it wasnt that big of a deal to have a dog run both. Now there are very few places that you can coon hunt with 0 chance of striking a bear.

--you can almost tell where somebody lives--- by how they answer this question--

same with coyote/bear- what a great way to get em in shape-

what a disaster if they run a coyote when bear hunting lol

running just bear----my dogs get 7 months /year running nothing-coon would only add about a month-
coyote would make it year round season -

i run a few cats but they are so scarce here almost never interferes with a bear hunt -

im very interested in knowing how to train one to run what i want when i want-- i think i could possibly train one--

training a whole pack is the problem
i run a few bear on snow every year--- so i cant use that --

jackbob mentioned smarter dogs-- ive noticed that smart and beardogs doesnt always go together -- i have had some hounds that were pretty smart--- till they smelled something - lol

the straighest beardogs ive seen --have treed a coon at one time or another-lol or worse-

I know what you mean Sam , I go back to WV alot and try to do some huntin when I can. I know where I live in SC I dont have to worry about my dog running a bear but I know when I go to visit my family in WV we are so over pop. with bear that I would probably hit more bear tracks than coon tracks.

My best answer for this is Maybe, it all depends on the area and dog. Jackbob and I have went round and round on this topic.

Around here, no one uses the same start dogs to hunt both bear and coon. If you do, you will have a lot of races on the wrong critter. At least with all the dogs I've ever tried it on, which probably shows how smart they are. Some guys might use their pack type dogs to hunt coon, but not their jump dog. I've seen a lot of dogs that have been beat of bear make nice coon dogs. I haven't seen any dogs that have been beat off coon, make a good bear dog

Now I know this sounds pretty hyprocritical, but a lot of guys use their bear dogs on yotes, Here. We don't have nearly as many yotes though and the dogs seem to pick up the snow running=yotes, vs dry ground=bear. There might be few yote runs in the bear season, but not enough to be a problem usually. I can't say the same for dogs that are hunted hard on coon though. We also can't run bear when there is snow on the ground.

Cats, anytime my dogs run a cat I'm happy. I'd probably throw a party if my bear dogs trashed on a cat and treed it. There are so few of them around that it's a non-issue. Cats are generally something you don't run unless you are really trying to. And sometimes you can't even run when you really busting your but trying to run one.

" the dogs seem to pick up the snow running=yotes, vs dry ground=bear. "

Nolte - We can't run bears at night here. I honestly believe that is why we don't have much trouble. The dogs relate night and day the same way.

" Cats, anytime my dogs run a cat I'm happy. I'd probably throw a party if my bear dogs trashed on a cat and treed it. "

See , we can agree on something ! LOL

Where I live .. IF yuo got a dog that will run coon and bear you will never tree a bear . The coon are so thick your dog would be under a coon tree every time.

Use the same dogs for Bear and Coon. Some have been run on fox, cat and lion as well.

They seem to know the difference in area/time of day. If they are on the box the only thing they are looking for is a Bear. If it's night and roading, they get a coon (only because there are no bears there ) and we can only run cats if we can see a track in the snow, because they are always in bear mode.

I can't justify feeding a dog that's only good at one thing, unless it was a World CH Coondog. And my bet is it could still run bear
