UKC beagle champ, has never been gunned over, is this very common not to gun over your trial dogs????

But Alot do not gun what they Trial as well.

Some of us do not shoot many rabbits because we want em there to run again. It can be easier to get permission to run dogs than to gun hunt. Some of my best running spots I have never gun hunted. Spend more time and effort putting out corn and salt for the rabbits. When you run dogs all year it is an advantage to have plenty of healthy rabbits around.

Most of us do shoot over the dogs enough to know they are not gun shy. I make it a point to shoot a few for a young dog during their first rabbit season, but typically shoot less than 10 rabbits per year. Shooting rabbits does not seem to change the way a dog runs. Having a healthy (but not overpopulated) supply of cottontails in several types of running areas definitely contributes to a dog's progress.

touchstone has stated it very well. Bottom line, A dead rabbit will never run again..I haven't shot a rabbit in over five years
With that said, my youngest dog is six years old. I will shot a few to a young starting hound , but that's it.

I think killing a few rabbits to your hounds keeps
that hunt and drive in them.young dog for sure jmo.

I agree with Dan and beagle/mike. But I have a method I also use. I carry a starter pistol with me at all times and fire over the dogs when running. And when running with my friends I like to fire it behind them to see if their gun shy. ROTFL

I have read some articles where harvesting rabbits will not effect the population for the following year. Not sure how true it is though?

The number of rabbits a place holds year after year is simply a predator pray relationship. Man is a predator. When the # of pray increases, the # of predators follows close behind. The the # of pray peaks and the # of predators continues up for a while, driving the # of pray down. Then the # of predators crash do to starvation. It is a cyclic event. The only thing that smooths out this cyclic event is cover. With ample cover the number of pray remain relatively constant. You can read that, year after year hunting has very little or no effect on the numbers of rabbits a place holds. That doesn't mean if you shoot a ton of rabbits in the Fall you will still have plenty to run in the Spring, but you will have plenty in the next Fall after breeding season.

I kill rabbits each year, i don't try to fill the tailgate as that's impossible around here. I do take my share though. I have seen the number fluctuate in the few years I have been at this and where I hunt is hunted hard, like you said cover is the main thing. I also have a place across from my house that's private and I have only taken a 3 out of there in the last 2 years and this year you can't find a rabbit in there.
