Looking for honest opinions?

I acquired a dog that is just coming 2 years old. I like how he is bred and I like how he acts. The problem is before I got him a very short time back he had never had a chance. (Lived in a kennel). I have been taking him out 3 to 5 times a week since I got him. He will absolutely get gone when you turn him loose. But I have tried messing with him on a dead and caged coon and he shows very little intrest. If you hunt him with another dog he will go his own way. Last couple times he has opened a little but didn't do anything with it. So would you all just keep taking him or try messing with him on a coon again. I don't want to show him a caged coon to much. But his lack of interest in coon concerns me.

In my 55 years of hunting, I have seen dogs not care about a cage coon. Couldn't care less about a dead coon. But what I would try. Show him a cage coon, don't left him too close, have him on a leash, tied back. In an open field that has short grass. At least 75 yards from a woods. Make sure he is watch and turn the coon loose towards to woods. See if he shows interest in game running from him. Make sure it is out of sight before you turn dog loose. Make him use his nose to find it.
Wet grass might be best and not a coon that has been in a trap a long time. They crap and sometimes stink. Might make a difference.
Good luck!

If you do what Harley Dan suggests I’d also consider pouring some water on the coon a few minutes before you release the coon or do it after the dew has fallen in the evening. I’d also release the coon where it has to run across an open area of at least 75 to 100 feet before it can climb so it leaves some scent on the ground before going up a tree.
