No more magazines

It’s definitely a sad time in this sport of coon hunting. We no longer can have the dream to get on the cover of a magazine. Unless one kennel club keeps there’s going for the sport. At the end of this year we have lost the last big one, Coonhound bloodlines. I received a letter this past week about the magazine. Definitely sad times and no help keeping it going for the youth.

Agreed, it is sad but it's time to let it go. Its been costing far too much to keep it afloat.

I think there is probably no one sadder to see the hound magazines disappear and die off the slow death that they have than me. Most of what I have done in my life has revolved around the "magic" that happened when reading the pages and pages of dogs ole' Cas Walker had for sale in the pages of Fully Cry and dreaming about just how good all of those dogs had to be, buy a Dynamite from Bill Boatman....and then stumbling upon John Wick's training articles. Those were great days for our sport. They bring back the fondest of memories.

I turn the dogs loose now and never hear another dog all night long.....and that is OK. For a few minutes each night, when I turn Bitty or Maple loose, I am just a kid again, walking along the creeks outside of Mohawk Village, and that is plenty good for me.

I urge all of you to support The American Field that UKC publishes now. No, it is not full of ads from Oney, House or Merchant or Moran but those days are gone, they were great, great days but we have to look to the future and appreciate the fact that UKC is giving us something, still trying to keep our sport alive.

I loved my American Cooner, and was sad to see it go. Multiply that by 10 with Coonhound Bloodlines! I can still remember the first time flipping the pages, devouring every article, every stud dog ad! I know we are living in a time where it’s hard for magazines to justify the cost to keep turning out a quality product. Doesn’t make it any less sad.

I guess my biggest concern is whether or not American Field will still contain the hunt info & top reproducers for us. Honestly I have no interest in retrievers/bird dogs, nor do I care to keep up with beagles & the like. Those sports have no hold on me, nothing against them but I was just never exposed as a child to them. I will be subscribing for at least the first year, to see what’s what.

Mark those were good times and lots of good memories. And yes I still feel like I'm back there sometimes when I turn Lefty loose and listen to him tree a coon. But it has changed. GPS and cell phones. Still very thankful to be able to turn a coon hound loose.

Another thing that I am curious about, is where can people see hunt results and new titles on dogs? Is there going to be a place on ukc website for that or does it not matter anymore? Me honestly the only thing that motivated me to get a title on a dog was seeing it in the book. I also looked at what dogs was winning and reproducing was in the book. I do understand not many people was subscribing to it. I just wondered if this is a kennel club why was there not club membership that covered the subscription to bloodlines. It would have been a win on both sides and actually be members of a club that try’s to keep the sport going for future generations. It is just hard to watch things disappear we enjoyed growing up with.

Yes, most all content you were used to seeing in CB will be made availabe elsewhere. A lot of it already was. Here's a good place to start.

There’s a movement in our sport and it’s going away from the old “allure” that hooked all of us at some point in our lives. A young person new to the sport sees Bloodlines on a side table and gets lost in the pages - imagining what that big stud dog sounds like on the tree in that photo.. and the prestige of winning one of those major hunts and finding yourself on the front cover. That, in my opinion, is something that a website simply cannot duplicate and that’s too bad. You don’t have to look hard at kennel clubs today to see that they are moving away from the common hunter and towards the money. That’s business, sometimes, and that’s ok. I for one am sorry to see the change.

I miss not having them as well

When I was young I was glued to the the magazines. American Cooner, Bloodlines, Full Cry. I remember looking at them and learned a lot.

I also remember reading a good story about hunting a Grizzly back which is in like the 1800 or so.. It was a great story. I think about that story alot and I read it like 30 years ago.

I left the sport for like 30 years. I started back almost 2 years ago, and now none of the magazines are around.

Wow...

Full Cry’s still around & PKC has the Pro Hound that comes with their membership, though it doesn’t have the articles & stud ads

Sorry Rob, looks like I’ve misled you. Full Cry’s still around has indeed paused their publication. I guess Pro Hound is the last man standing so to speak
