I would say the vast majority of plott hounds I encounter are all used for big game. I rarely see people in my area coon hunt them. Do you think this gives them a bad rap amongst coon hunters? Are they looked at as sub par coon hounds? What are your thoughts?

because they maybe the only breed left that hasn't gone to the ambush style-hot nose- silent hound that is out there for the true pleasure hound person to hunt.

Would say not so much of a "bad rap" as the score card doesn't favor the big game hound. Cold nose, open trailer and track hound.

I was intrigue about this question because I never see anyone discuss the plotts. When I watch my best bear dog, I always wonder how’d he’d look in the hunts. Would he show the same drive? Speed? Focus? Tree power? Idk. But I always wonder.

I'm a former plott hunter, had them for 20 years. I my opinion the breed doesn't reproduce well as a whole. I've seen and owned some exceptional plotts but they rarely reproduce pups if equal talent. I'm sure there are exceptions to this but haven't seen it. Gr Nt Ch Garrisons Brindle Ranger is the only plott I've seen that you knew what was going to be produced, they would have a good mouth, they would tree, they'd probably need broke off of trash and they'd typically forget what you taught them yesterday, BUT they'd tree coons and could win. My own Gr Nt ch plott didn't reproduce like this. The most recent problem I see in today's plotts is a weak mouth. Finding one that's talented and can be heard for a mile seems rare. Good luck with your plotts I'll be rooting for you while I hunt something different..

I was looking for a top bloodline of Bear dogs for hog hunting and started looking at the Plott…I didn't find anything I liked…i did hear quite a few guys brag on Bill Hicks Plotts back in Tennessee…his are coon dogs but he sells them as hog and bear dogs as well…

My thoughts on the bear dogs…many are turned out at the bait stand or a good track…that might explain why I did not like them as strike dogs…they didn't seem to have that finding ability I was looking for…

I liked the Pocohontas Plotts the best for hog hunting and crossed that into my Mt curs…I was looking for a one time cross…I now have 1/4 and 1/8 Pocohontas Plott in my dogs and will be less going forward…the idea was to capture a few traits from the Plott breed…

You don’t think it’s because plott hunters are typically tight knit, private people. The lines I hunt are great but they’re almost impossible to get your hands on. We breed our own and only give pups away to people we hunt with.

100% plott guy here.

Do they get a bad rap? yes. Have they earned the bad rap in a vast majority of cases? Yes.

If you want to hunt plotts you have to love hunting plotts. If you want to simply hunt or develop a coondog there are much easier and more effective ways to reach that goal. As was mentioned reproduction is an issue and even the best of the best get a handful of pups in a lifetime. Lack of breeding volume and quality dogs makes it very hard to see how a dog is reproducing before the sucker is too old to take advantage of reproducing. This simply slows down the entire process of breeding for good traits. Its just a constant hamster wheel that has gone on for decades.

Are there good plott hounds? Sure there are, but if you want one your gonna work for it. You only have so much life to hunt, how much of it do you want to spend searching for a dog that fits the bill of everything your looking for? Are you committed to doing that with a plott? That is what it comes down to.

Plotts are a versatile breed, they do make good coon dogs, but excel on big game. Nothing slow about dogs that tree bears, lions and other big game, I live in East Tenn. Very close to North Carolina and the home of the old Plott lines. I am familiar with breed and have seen some outstanding Plott dogs both coon and big game. From the start the Plott dogs were seen as big game dogs and were bred as such. I think most folks still see the plotts as big game hounds, but they can do a good job on coons. Back in the day a big game dog was much more valuable that a coon dog, at least in my part of the country. Dave
