I grew up in Northeast, Ohio (about 30 minutes from PA border)and now live in WV. I saw a set of tracks there around 1985 or so and a good friend of mine said they trapped one at his step dad's about 4 or 5 years ago. He actually has it on video. It was getting in his bee hives and the state brought in one of those culvert traps and got it. Ohio is never going to see a real big population because of the lack of territory. There is just not enough room. WV might not have as much food (this is also debatable, maybe not the high quality agricultural food such as soybeans but there is just as much mast, if not more) but it has vast amounts of uninhabited land that the bears need. The state of Ohio could not stand too many bears for this reason. There would be too much interaction with people.
