Sounds like a nasty cut.......

I don't use peroxide on open wounds, it causes tissue damage at the cellular level. I would have gotten some CLEAN tap or bottled water and a syringe and irrigated the wound with the H20, under pressure from the syringe. Use at least 60-80 mls of H20, getting all of the dirt out. Use a flashlight to look deep into the wound.

Look well for any remaining foreign body ie; glass, as you can't leave any in the wound.

Now, about wound closing.......not sure about dogs, but I do know a 4 day old lac is too old to suture / close. Bacterial count is too high at this point. Might try some steri-strips to approximate the wound edges, but don't close too tightly as it needs to drain.

Bandage well with clean dressings and change dressings daily. Looks for signs of infection.....heat, reddness, swelling and purulent drainage [pus]. Use H20 to soak the dried dressings off.

Use a cone on his / her head if he / she chews at the dressing.

Hopefully the tetanus vaccine is up to date??

Follow-up with some antibiotics. You'll need to research the type / dose / duration with a vet.

Don't run the dog till the lac is well healed...

I don't know what "blue coat" is, sorry.

Now, I'm no vet.......but, this is how a similar lac on a human would be treated.

Hope this helps.

I would try to keep her out of the dirt. Blu coat is about the only thing I use on cuts, it has always worked good for me. Make sure that when you put it on it is dry before you leave the dog. I had a friend that used it and the dog licked it and his tounge swelled up. Also make sure it is clean before you spray it. I use some warm water with a little bit of dish soap. A cut like that will take a couple weeks or so to heal up.

Epsom Salt

When ever my dogs cut or tear pads I put epsom salt in warm water and dip the foot in it in the morning and at night.
