Steer clear....

Of all the game you mention, none has the ability of a bear to catch its pursurer and hold them like a bear. The catch-kill dogs are not needed, like a good bay dog,JMHO.

WHY

best hounds are outrun by some bear and they are faster and more endurance than pitts

always looking for more nose on a hound--
and a pitt has less-

pitt has an advantage in haveing more gritt-

if you can get him there-

pit is a great fighter-- but

they are likely to grab bear and just hang on

ticks do that but they dont tree many bear -

hounds more likely to tree bear or live to do it another day

- i have used a few 1/4 pitts and they were ok dogs -- but what i said above applied to them --

im not saying that in the right situation that u couldnt tree a bear with a pit bull ---anything is possible --i saw a pic of one on the internet that was treed by a house cat -

If your're looking for something other than a hound..how about Mt Curs, they're smaller like pits...just as gritty, maybe more so, will bite and pull fur but also get out of the way..a few can get a bear spinning and force it to climb without getting themselves killed. They have endurance and nose...the only problem will be finding them. I'm not talking about squirrel dogs, I mean big game bred Mt Curs like Townsend Dunlavy runs out of Arkansas.

I do not know where you hunt or how many dogs yuo are allowed to run at one time , BUT here we can run 100 dogs at one time off one bait if you could afford to feed that many or were capable of handling that many . In my years of bear hunting I have never seen a pit in the pack of dogs . I believe if you have the choice of a pit or another hound ::: I would be taking another hound . I really cann;t see any advantage to a pit over a good bear hound . The hound will be a better tree dog for sure :: the hound has better running gear under him , The hound will have more nose . And as far as gritt ; a bear hound will be as gritty as you need

I have never seen a pit bull with enough speed to catch anything. They will never see the bear let alone fight him.

Hog hunters ussually have them sitting on the four wheeler until the hounds bay them and then the pits finish it.

Mixing a little pit into the bear pack is an idea that gets tried here and there but I have never heard of anyone having any great success with it.

Wow! Your pits are as fast as greyhounds.

No, I am not out of my mind, but I do question some of the numbers you just posted.

Your dogs will not run neck and neck with any hound because there aren't any hounds fast enough to keep up with your pits.

Could you please post a picture of some of your dogs and game?

Kyle

i aint gettin into an argument just want to post some averages about speed

On average most "hounds" can run between 22 and 26 mph on quick sprints say for a half mile or so or maybe a mile if they are in great shape. They can hold 15 mph though if they are in shape, "all day long".

Most good bred curs that I have seen such as Mountain Curs are a shade faster than that but not enough to really make a difference. I would say they average between 24 and 28 mph with exceptions always.

When you got to talkin sight hound type it really depends what kind of dog you are talking about. Track type greys can reach speeds of 48 mph for very short distances, which is literally almost flying. Field trial type greys reach speeds nowadays at the 40 mph mark and hold it for distances of up to a half and hit a mile stretch hookin it still but ovbiously not at 40 still.

Here is the shocker that most wont believe but it is true. Game bred type bulldogs can hook it too fellas. I have seen some reach speeds of close to what the cur dogs can. They do not have running type endurance though for some reason. I dont understand it but it has to be mechanical obviously. They just dont have endurance when it comes to runnings for whatever reason. They are tough as nails though and will kill themselves trying to do whatever it is they got on their mind. I aint a bear hunter but they would be a piss poor choice as a bear dog. Some of the modern day type Plotts have a little bull blood in them here and there. Not a lot but a shot. This is not to say they all do or even the "papered" ones do but it is fairly evident in a few lines that somewhere in the last 20 years there has been a shot added. Personally, I would get my bear dogs from a bear hunter with bear dogs.

Common sense tells me that someone , or a few someone's , have already tried it. And if it would have worked , everyone would have a pit in their pack.
I'll stick with my hounds.

A pit on a bear's not going to work. If the bear trees, you got no use for him. If the bear bays up, you better bring a bunch of pits. You're going to go through them pretty quick.

Foot Speed

And track speed are a different thing. I am not trying to question anyones numbers about speed here, I doubt anyone has a MPH while running track. Let alone talking about Nose/ Desire /Brains. Ect

I will just say this.. If I have to use pitts to do my hound's job. Hell I am sellling my hounds and going into bird dogs..

Note.. I don't hog hunt though.. I would use them for that, maybe crossed with a little cow dog also I have seen those crosses work well on pigs

speed

Foot speed and track speed are most definately two different things. I guess I assumed we all knew that. Maybe, I was wrong. I am sure somewhere way down the line on certain occasions they maybe related but I doubt they have much to do with one another. I still would not opt to use a bulldog for a bear dog. I love watchin one smash into a hog though. One of the most intense things a man will ever watch.

the real ? is what would one pitbull add to any pack..... not much in my opinion. You would have to worry about them killing your hounds..... if you hunted one by itself you wouldn't have that worry.... but you wouldn't have much chance finding a bear. If you had a pack of pits you would just have a few fights scattered all over the place. I know a few old timers that bought into this thought and it didn't last very long. A real game bred pit is bred to be a fighting dog...... that's what they were intended for...... so it would be like taking a pointer out to chase bears with.... you may find a FEW that could do it but they are bred to do something else better. Why do so many people want to re-invent the wheel.... there are guys out there catching more bears then I will ever see.... using all types of hounds and curs. It is working for them.... it just might work for you.

agreed

I would stick to using what other fellas are using in your area. They aint got to be one certain breed or anything like that. Just stick with some type of hound or cur or houndxcur cross and you will be just fine. You can mix and match just about any breed of bear dog if you feel the need. Just make sure both parents are the type of dog you enjoy being around cause you gonna have to live with em not me.

You are correct in that we all know the difference<I think, LOL> I was just trying to make the point that speed is only a part of being effective.
