I have a 2yr. old male that is fast, but he likes to pick his head up and run. He over runs some tracks, he sticks with it until he brings them back. I was wondering if he will get better at this with hunting and age?

Solo his guts out and see if that helps. Being 2 years old he may be set in his race horse ways. Probably the way he is bred.

Thanks guys!! That is great advice, and insight!! He is the only beagle I've got. He runs loose most of the time. He runs rabbits night and day around the house. He has improved tremendously over the last year. I've killed a pile of rabbits with him. It is now rare that he jumps a rabbit, and does not bring it back multiple times if need be. He almost always recovers the track, but he still can not resist picking his head up and running, especially if the rabbit goes down the edge of a field or a fence row.

I agree his style is not going to change. He's never going to be one to let grass grow under their feet. I was just wondering if with age, and even more hunt time if he would ever get to the point where he doesn't let his feet outrun his nose?

Only 2 years old he may still be learning he needs to gear down some in poor scenting conditions. Running on the frozen ground should be an advantage to him. Should force him into staying closer on the track. If you are with him and see him overrun, discipline him with firm voice commands and get him right back over to where his last bark was. Run with him some when possible.

Thank you Touchstonebeagl!! That's a good point! He does seem to struggle in tougher conditions. I has a female that he is a carbon copy of. She struggled on frozen ground, and snow when she was young, but as she got older she became consistent in any conditions! I hope he will do the same.

I've seen this beagle go... He's not nearly as fast on rabbits as he is deer, but for some reason he never over runs the deer tracks. He lines them right out and is out of hearing in no time!!
