Green as grass and need the basics of how to start a pup to blood track game. Any help and advice is appreciated.

Hi Beagler - I have been interested in this also, and recently heard the topic on Mike Avery's Outdoor Magazine radio show (here in Michigan).

There are several websites that are all about blood tracking, and also at least one Facebook page that is listed. Some of the sites offer training tips, and how to get started.

I just did a google search: Michigan Blood Tracking Dogs is the one with all of the websites & info. There is also a list of people who do this as a service to deer hunters, and their phone numbers are listed, so you could also call one of them to see how they got started.

They are using all different breeds of dogs for blood tracking, with much success - which I found interesting.

I don't know what state you are in, but you can always start with the info here, & search further. Good Luck !!

About 10 yeats ago I picked up bow hunting. Loved it! And still do. Well,,, anyone who bow hunts knows that the margin for error as far as a shot is very small. I made a terrible shot on a doe and thougnt there was no hope of ever finding her as there were only small specks of a blood trail to the standing corn where i lost it all together. I made a few calls and a buddy of mine told me to take my pit bull Zeek and put him on blood and he would find the deer. I thought he was full of it as Zeek was just a house dog but I was desperate.
I loaded him in the truck and to the woods we went. I kept him on a long lead as I didn't want him running a wounded deer for 3 days. He IMMEDIATELY caught on to what we were doing in the woods in the dark and pulled me through that corn like his butt was on fire. I thought at first he was just messing around until we came to a spot where the doe had obviously laid down and there was quite a pool of blood. Long story short he found her and many others for friends of mine that had herd he had the skills until he sadly passed 3 years ago.
I now have a doberman that is again just a house dog that we used on 2 deer this past season and he found them without a bit of trouble and the last one we tracked for a mile or better.

Sorry to be so looong winded but I honestly believe that any breed with a little sense will blood track a wounded animal with very little if any training.
