Re: Fifty Years Ago At The Nite Hunts

Fifty years, ago i was 16 years old on my first night hunt, i drew a couple, of local hunters, by the name of Bill Knab, and Carl Hanselman, Bill passed on a couple of years ago, but i still call, Carl, every other night or so. Use to be, it was fun, to go out on a nite hunt, with someone you had heard of but never met. Now the rules won't let you visit, it's not really a hunt, no more, it's all about winning no matter what, if you can hear an old wind water pump, squeak, you say strick my dog. Use to be you met your next friend, at a night hunt, you have more in common with him, than you do your own family. Night hunt numbers, are down and they ain't no wonder, part of coon hunting, is visiting, sharing, your time with a stranger. Those guys 50 years ago, were not interested, in winning, at all costs, they were having fun. They would, just as soon, as give you the win, in fact, they'd prefer, that the new kid, got the win, they got a big kick out of that.
I'm glad your first experiences in comp hunting were so good. Mine were only 35 years ago, but drastically different than yours. There were no youth hunts back then and in my area there were indeed several hard core hunters that were out to win at any cost. The new kid was viewed as a sheep thrown to the wolves and easy target to get out. There was a huge field of hunters in the events, so they figured they probably wouldn't draw you again at least any time soon, plus no social media where there actions would get exposed so they readily twisted every situation to their advantage! I saw far worse things pulled 20-30 years ago in the hunts than I do today. After my first few hunts I quit the comp hunts for several years. As far as the social aspect of things I agree there just isn't the social get together happenings among coon hunters anymore, but that's not just coon hunters, it's in all things. Even Nascar races have tons of empty seats anymore. People just stay home and stare at their cell phones and computers these days and it's only going to get worse.
