Pat back in the mid 60's there was a book in the school Library called "The Complete Dog Book" It had all the AKC breeds along with complete descriptions and the different breakdowns of what group of dogs they were in. Think there was something like 105 recognized breeds back then.

Anyway there was the quote you like in the book and it explained how it got there. It took the history of the dogs that won BEST OF SHOW for a given year and how the title made that dog a popular breed. Then it showed how in a few years of just breeding those dogs for pets and money the popularity was down and the damage it done to the breed. That was from the 60's and we are still doing it today. Guess we are slow learners. In reality if we are still doing it. Does it mean we are dumb or perhaps to smart for our own good. Because I think if your are just greedy and breed A to B just to get pups to sell. Thats not good. Then the guy that is trying to do right and Breeds selective A to selective B does good for a generation or two. But he likes seeing his name on the pedigree more than the quality of the dog. So he breeds and breeds the successful ones from his first crosses together until he has bred all the success out of them.

Any good cattle farmer knows they have to cull out of the herd periodically to ensure their program does not become stagnet and end up with faults that cost them money in the sale. Just because ole bossy has 5 production award champions in her pedigree and was raised on the bottle and the whole family loves her. If she don’t produce enough milk or raise good calves she is turned into hamburger.



Farmers cull coonhunters don’t seem to be able to they can find some kind of value in a worthless dog.

You can sell a worthless cow for hamburger meat. What can you do with a worthless coondog? You can run a cull cow through an auction and someone will buy it for whatever it is worth. The price of horses bottomed out when they outlawed the sale of horse meat. We don't have Coonhound auctions or a market for dog meat.

Bruce, never read the book.
Believe it or not I thought it up myself from my own various observations.
Some of the most glaring cases to name just a few off top my head with nothing to do with coonhounds.

Rough Collie.....Lassie
German Shepherds...Rin Tin Tin
Dalmatians...101 Dalmatians
Jack Russell….Wishbone
Doberman..The Doberman Gang and also Zeus and Apollo

Then you got people in the coon hounds that take a worthless female breed it to a world champ for no reason except thinking they will make money selling pups or they will get instant world champ quality dogs.
I have personally watched people mince lines of dogs WITHOUT trying to find out why this line has certain traits or which parent they came from.

I had another quote of my own I have been thinking of adding to my signature.
"When breeding dogs you are doomed for failure if you refuse to recognize all ancestors instead of a few ."

You see I have ran into individuals that can not, will not,
accept where their dogs got their abilities/traits.
I had one certain guy about come unglued because I dared to tell him his dog was a descendant from a line of dogs he did not like and he preferred to only name and recognize the ones he liked.

I just looked the title of the book up. AKC is up to 153 recognized breeds now. This is the newest edition.

Agree with both you and Bruce, and as Bruce has said you can't change the things you accept! In the days of grade dogs, most people bred for performance and culled hard. Today, most people breed to sell and hardly ever cull. I had hoped the xbreed program would get us back to breeding for performance rather than papers, maybe it will. Dave
