I've recently been asked if I would breed turkey to any other breeds and participate in the x bred program. I wish those that participate the best of luck but turkey won't be a part of it. I'm proud of the redbone breed and it's progress it's making in the competition world. Thanks for all the interest and compliments on turkey.
Your not alone in the feeling that the redbone breed is making real progress and that we don't need to take short cuts and dilute the work of many great redbone breeders before us with the dna of other breeds. When I hunted with Turkey he looked as good as any redbone I have ever drawn in a competition hunt that night and I have drawn quite a few good ones. He struck honest, located and treed quick, and had real live coons and didnt make any mistakes. If more people would base their breeding programs on dogs like Turkey instead of monetary gain, only breeding to dogs from their own line and other things not nearly as reliable....we would see progress in this breed come at a much swifter pace. I am glad I got to see him tree several coon in a cast that had some pretty good dogs in it and do it the way he did...with style!
I saw enough that night to decide I can use him in my breeding program in the future. I am trying to figure out which female would make the best cross on him with the traits and performance I saw that night. We have the next round of crosses planned out for this summer and fall...but after that one of our females will be coming your way. In the meantime, I will be watching for info, pictures and video on his offspring. I like that he is from a good litter, and I like that his breeding on the topside is related to dogs I hunt and that his bottom side is totally unrelated, but from two very good reproducing lines. I think he is a dog who stands a really good chance of being able to add some traits I am seeking along with the benefits of uniformity I have been getting from line breeding on the Outlaw and Moonlight lines. I think dogs like Turkey and his brother Gr.Nt.Ch. Stone Cold Mack offer a unique opportunity to anyone with linebred Outlaw or Moonlight females because on the one hand breeding to either male is a line breeding, but also a complete outcross to the breeding on his bottom side. This is a very unique situation and I hope others with similarly bred females will take a hard and serious look at crosses on either of these males. Good luck Travis....hope you and Turkey have another great year ahead of you....shane
