Has been great coon hunting weather!!
The weather in upstate NY has not been the norm, hardly any snow and temps way higher than normal has worked out great and in my favor with young dogs this year.
This past week our deer season finally closed it has prevented me from taking a pair of young pups to the woods in the daytime something I like to do. So last Tuesday night I decided to let my 6 mos old Blubelle pup tag along with her 14 mos old half brother Samson who has been doing a great job for me so far this kill season. Bluebelle had never been to the woods at night and never seen a live coon.
I must say in all my years of starting young dogs I have NEVER EVER had a pup open and tree hard on it's first trip to the woods. Some show interest and go with the older dogs and maybe bark a time or two at the tree out of excitement but never like this little Blubelle showed me on this night!
I walk hunted behind the house, took the RR tracks South a half mile to hunt a mature red oak and beech woods with a couple nice ravines I knew held some den trees. I cut Samson loose and Belle took right off with him. I think the fact I house my dogs in a half acre pen in the woods they start out being real comfortable in the woods at night.
Belle would get out 50 to 75 yrds cast around and check in every little while but get right back out kinda doing her own thing and checking on Samson. It also was a bright moon and easy walking. Samson was working a creek about 70 yrds away I saw him catch a wind current, throw his head up and took out of there into the southerly wind like a bullet. Heard him open about 165 yrds in and I could tell it was hot! He really moved it quick and as I walked towards him I hear Belle yip a couple times. I heard Samson locate and start to tree and as I walked towards the tree Belle started chopping like crazy, got closer where I could see with my light she was straight up just blowing the top out. How lucky was I it was very wet and this was a hot track and scenting conditions were great it was a perfect scenario for young Blubelle!!! I tied them back and shot out a nice boar coon, he hit the ground and dogs saw him run about 20 feet and flop over! I let Belle go first she followed the scent and started wooling the coon when I realized he still had a little life and bit her, it just fired her up more so I let Samson go and finish the coon and really made a big fuss over her!!
We walk hunted for quite awhile before Samson struck again in a big hemlock woods below Burleys pond. He worked an old feeder track then located on a big hemlock at the edge of a ravine, little Blubelle came in smelled the tree and backed Samson. It was hard seeing the top of the tree as close as the other trees were I shined but finally decided to leash dogs and head home figuring it was a great night! Walked about 500 yrds towards home when Samson smelled coon and came unraveled so I cut both dogs, Samson went about 40 yrds struck a hot track and with Belle opening they came treed close by. Walking in I saw eyes in the big hemlock spaced far aprt, the crack of the Ruger brought the big boar down and it rolled down the steep ravine side and into the creek. Dogs and I slid down and both excitedly wooled the big ole boar. Man what a night for my young dogs! I always say with young dogs you just keep taking them till you encounter the right conditions and situations and try to leave on a good note!! Young dogs I always carry the coon with me to let them know I want it and how happy I am with it. I carried the coon home with Belle just a wagging her tail and me telling her what a great job she did!!! Her brother Speck is next!!
