hunt

my son was home for the weekend, so we turned the hounds lose. We hunted Screech and made two turn outs. 1st one Screech hunted out about 900 yards. went left another three hundred yards and started working back towards us. He struck at about 400 yards from us and took a short track about 200 yards and treed. We seen the coon and recasted him. Screech went another 450 yards and feel treed. He had the coon on the out side and we took him home. Chiefs turn was next. We turned Chief lose in a sweet corn patch, he was struck at about 300 yards on the other side of the sweet corn in a bean field. Chief took the track 480 yards and treed. We where able to drive the truck down the laneway and got 50 yards from him. It took a few minutes to find the coon, the coon had buried himself in some vines, and was hard to see. We loaded up and moved to another spot and turned lose again. after about 5 minutes chief fell treed about 500 yards from us. It was a big den tree and we couldn't find the coon on the outside. we loaded up and called it a night. It was a nice night for the dogs. Temp was 53 when we started and was 49 when we finished. Their was a heavy dew covering the ground. It feels like fall already

hunt

Took Screech Tue. night. 1st drop was in a sweet corn patch. He went threw sweet corn and struck at about 200 yards into the woods. It was a hot track and he took it about 400 yards, and then shut down. I felt it was junk. What ever it was he dropped it, and continued to hunt. He hunted out and was headed toward the same spot I treed with chief the other night. I drove to the spot where I had treed with Chief and stopped to listen. Not a bark. The Garmin said he was in another 400 yards deeper. I was able to drive to the end of the roadway. He was heading in a spot I didn't want to be. I was with in 100 yards of him, and tried to call him in. He started to come but changed direction and started to go deeper. With the help of the toner and a nick on the shocker, he agreed to come to me. We picked up and went to another spot. I dropped Screech into the woods off a seasonal road. He went about 400 yards south then swung left another 350 yards and back towards the road. I turned on the flashing light on the collar, and seen him come across the road along the creek. He went into the woods about 400 yards and fell treed. I drove the truck down to where he had crossed and listened to him tree for 5 min. Then I went in to him. Screech was treed on a big Maple tree. It only took me about a min. to find the coon. I was able to get eyes with my red lens, and then the whole body with the bright light. Loaded up for home and called it a night.

Trip

I would like to thank Russell Baker and Mackie Mann's For taking me for a hunt last week. I was on a road trip to pick up a dog and stopped along the way. We had a good hunt, and all the dogs looked good. We made 4 trees, and seen 3 of the four. I also felt they had the one we didn't find. Lagrange is always one of my favorite spots to hunt. Thanks again, I enjoyed it.

hunt

I took chief for a little tune up at 4 am this morning. temp. was 70 with 95% humidity. Moon was full and I didn't even need my light on to load and on load chief in the dog box. I turned him lose and he was struck at about 250 yards in short order. It sounded like it was going to be a good track. As Chief worked the track out of the swap into the hard woods things slowed down. He was in a hard woods that was about a 50 acre piece that had been logged last year. All the tops are still there and its rough. They took over 400 trees out last year. Chief worked the track into another section, warmed it back up and come treed. Garmin said he was .62 miles. I walked up the road and went in on the piece that hadn't been logged. It took me awhile to get to him, But he was pounding every breath. When I got there I give him a pat on the back and stepped back to take a look. It didn't take long to see four sets of eyes looking down at me. It was mom and three kits. I give Chief another pat on the back and we headed back to the truck. Chief and I where both huffing and puffing. I pulled back in the drive way at 5:30. It was short and a sweet hunt for a full moon.

hunt

Took Chief with some friends and there female last night. full moon 70 degrees, cut lose about 9 pm. Chief struck a bad old track at 80 yards from us. The female is very tight on the ground, and will only open on hot tracks. they worked the track out of the woods into a cornfield towards the road. At about 400 yards we hopped in the trucks and headed up the laneway back to the road. I turned up the road and got with in 80 yards of Chief. He was still cold trailing, and the female had yet to open. We got out of the truck and the female came to us. Chief went on and headed back down the edge of the corn and a hedge row on the opposite side of the corn. My buddy took his female about a half mile down the road and turned her into another place. We drove back down the lane to where we had cut lose. By then Chief had gone about 900 yards to the southwest. We hopped into the truck and where able to get with in 300 yards of Chief. My buddies hunt of utvs and have a lot of roadways threw their land. As we sat and listened to Chief we heard their female open behind us. Chief took the track another 700 yards in a big u and come treed. We went to him and found his coon in a big Cherry tree. While we were shining Chiefs tree, We heard the female come treed. The cell phone wrung and they told us she had the meat. We met back up at the road, shot the crap for a few minutes and called it a night. It was 10:30.

last nights hunt

Had some friends come over and hunt with me last night. It was 70 degrees and we had some cloud cover. Coon where moving good. We cut lose at about 9 pm. I had Chief and they brought a young Bullet/S.R. bred female. First dump was in a corn field. Chief struck at about 400 yards. the female joined in within a few barks. They took it around the corn a couple of times and then into the woods. They bogged down a little then warmed it back up. Chief came treed at about 650 yards from the truck. As we started to the dogs we had coyotes came in on the dogs. Chief stayed treed ,but it spooked the female a bit. Chief was treed in a big tree that was covered by many other trees and we couldn't find the coon. Second dump both dogs where opening on the lead. We cut lose and they popped a hot one up at about 300 yards. When we got to the tree the female was belly up and Chief was digging in a hole about 5 feet from the bottom of the tree. I let Chief know I wasn't happy about the hole. We found the coon and headed back to the truck. 3rd drop Both dogs again opened on the lead and struck as soon as we cut them. They took a track about 470 yards the female located with chief right with her. When we got to the tree the female was to the right about 70 yards trying to work a track. We found the coon and the female came in and covered. We let both dogs tree for awhile with lots of encouragement given to the female. I took Chief home and I took Screech. We cut lose into a hard woods. Screech and the female opened at about 250 yards and took a track about 300 yards. Screech located and I said he was treed. He was short balling and never did flip it over to a chop. On are way into him he shut down and left. I wasn't a happy camper. Both dogs had shut down. After a few minutes they opened back up. We lost them on the Garmin. We went back to the truck and drove around to them. As we where puling up I could hear them treed. We got with in 350 yards of them. They where treed on a pine tree with 2 coon in it. Both dogs treed hard and sounded good. I stayed at the truck and let the young guys do the walking to that tree. It was 12:30 and we called it a night

Atum oaks

Had some people call and ask how I did at O.A. I never hunted. I was entered, and I confirmed my entry. I thought all GR.NITE CH. hunted off fair grounds as advertised. When they drew out cast they where sending me 95 miles north of Richmond to a satellite club. I drove 7 1/2 hours to Richmond and my hotel was in Richmond. If I known I was going to hunt near Decatur. I could have gotten a room up there and saved about 4 hours of drive time from home. Garmin said 1hr. and 45 minutes up, and the same back. add in a hour hunt time and I have another 5 hour trip. Ten years ago I would have made the trip. Older and wiser! IT isn't worth smashing your truck or killing yourself or someone else because your too tired to drive.

Congratulations to all winners.

hunt

I hunted a young male out of Chief called Joe. Joe has only been at the house a few days. 1st drop he took off the chain like he was going to go hard. went about 100 yards and came back. I started to walk and he went back out. He struck some thing at 200 yards took it in an open field and did a big u back toward me. went about 600 yards then broke off. I think it was a fox. He was back towards the truck so I walked back to the truck, I put the lead on him and recast him on a creek. at about 150 yards he located and fell treed and sounded good. he had the coon. Drop 2. I cut him again he went about 200yards, picked on a tree, and finally settled on it. I couldn't find the coon. On the way back to the truck I seen a cherry tree with 5 kits in it on the edge oh the field. I cut Joe lose and he opened and went under the tree with the kits in it, And kept going. Joe went another 50 yards and come treed. I seen the coon. I think it was momma. I called it a night.

I recomend Dave and his blood !!

I have to say I bought a female that goes back to my Brussel dog about two years ago directly out of Chief !!

I showed her a scent trail twice as a little pup she treed both times.
She treed her first release coon and stayed hooked !!
Every time she has been in the woods she hunts like a broke dog !!
I have owned MANY NATURALS and this little Girl has all them beat !!

Thanks again Dave Look for Apple in the hunts this fall or next spring !!!!

!!wildwilly!!

Wild Willy
Glad she is making a nice hound. It takes people to do the necessary work to bring out natural ability. That ability comes from the bloodlines that are in them. Your old dogs are in that blood, along with many others. Good luck with her, and I hope she makes a top hound for you. Take care Dave

hunt

Hunted Screech and Joe together last night. My buddy Kevin came over and hunted with me. 1st drop cut lose on the edge of a woods in a fresh cut hay field. Screech busted into the woods and Joe was hanging around. After a couple of minutes we walked about 10 yards into the woods. As soon as we did Joe left and went hunting. We walked back out to the open field and listened. Screech fell treed at about 650 yards. Joe was opening ,but never did tree. When we got to Screech's tree, Joe was about 30 yards to the right barking in the wind. We looked for Screech's coon but couldn't find it. I didn't want to squall because Joe was starting to work a track away from where he was opening in the wind. I let Joe work the track a bit. Screech was being a pain in the butt on the lead so I cut him lose. As soon as I cut him Joe came treed. Screech opened, but did not cover. We went to Joe's tree. About the time we got him chained back Screech covered. The dogs where treed on a pine with another pine and a cherry tree all together. We couldn't find the coon. 2nd drop We dropped in a sweet corn patch, and hit a hot one. Screeched opened first and Joe joined in. It was a burning hot track that didn't last long. Joe treed and Screech was just a few seconds behind. They where only about 300 yards from us. Both dogs treed every breath. Sure sounded good. We found the coon, headed back to the truck and called it a night.

I read your thread every time I get on the computer. You have put a lot of time and effort in to your female. I hope she will finish into a top hound for you. Good luck at the Baby stakes.

Give me a call any night. Its best if you can let me know a day ahead. I have seen more kits this year than I have in a long time. I thought last winter would be hard on the coon population, But it looks like it didn't hurt it a bit. take care Dave

hunt

I hunted Joe last night by himself. 1st drop I cut him, and he went about 200 yards and came back to me. I walked a long the edge of a corn field and big hard woods. Joe went out about 200 yards, did a big u and came back in again. This time I sent him back out with a little gentle persuasion. It worked well. Garmin showed him at 400 in short order. Joe threw a big locate and came down hard on a tree about 675 yards from the truck. As I walked into him and he was treeing every breath. Joe was about 100 yards in side the hard woods on a big Maple tree. I didn't think I would be able to find the coon with so much cover, but two eyes appeared. When I went from the red lenses to the bright light I could see the whole coon. 2nd drop. I cut Joe lose and he opened at about 100 yards left handed. He took a track into a steep ravine. It was about 50 to a hundred feet down. It took him a while, but he final got the track to the bottom a long the creek. He took the track about 90 yards up the creek and had trouble getting up the other side of the ravine. After a while he finale got back up the other side into a hemlock grove. After several attempts to get treed I went into him. He was checking trees and treeing in the air. He just wasn't able to put a tree on it. I could have waited to see if he would pick a tree, but I went in and put the lead on him. I would have liked to see him get treed, but I was glad that he didn't tree just to get treed. I felt he was trying to be accurate. I loaded him up called it a night.
