I know you're heading out tonight with Kevin so I hope you guys get a couple treed before the snow moves in. Coons tonight and maybe lions tomorrow...what a deal.

Finally...

Dave was able to get to the woods last night for the first time in a long time. He loaded up Yank and Leinie and headed out.

On the first drop, Yank struck and treed and Dave kept Leinie on the lead and then cut her in to him. He didn't want to have two rammy hound dogs that hadn't been to the timber in couple of months, busting through the country side in knee deep snow...smart move. Anyway, she tracked in and then away from where Yank was treed but came up treed further down the line. He tied Yank and followed her thinking she had followed back to a den but...she had the meat.

Few nice pictures of Leinie treed...

Next dump Yank got struck and moved it out from a spring ditch. Leinie had gone back down the other way but was heading back towards where Yank was when he came treed...she covered and they had the meat again...

Yank alone...

On the last drop, Leinie struck and Yank joined in. They tracked to a cliff where we know there are dens and Leinie fell treed on the cliff but Yank went around and kept moving on. Leinie heard him moving on and found her way up and around the cliff also and soon both were pushing it pretty hard. They ended up treed so Dave went up and found them in a deep ditch and bulldoze pile. As Dave was working to drag them out, he noticed this big ol' boy stuck in the brush up from where they were diggin'...

Plus it...eh?

It was kind of weird to see that frozen coon stuck up in the brush over that hole but he was deader than a stone and had been probably for some time although he was pretty well preserved. We have treed under that bulldoze pile before....ask Pastor Mike and Buck

It was a good night out considering the dogs hadn't been out for quite awhile. There is still a lot of snow in the woods but today was in the 40s and a lot of it packed and even started to disappear on the southern exposures.

More to come...

Griz...

Got a call from Tim G last night and I got to hear his nice pup Griz doing a real nice job on the tree. Tim says he was hunting him alone and made a den and one on the outside. Griz has a nice mouth in that pitch that you can hear for a long ways and he gives it real good from what I could hear.

Griz is from the Rabble Rouser and Music cross and is showing that he can get it done like some of his brothers and sisters from that same cross. I liked him in training and knew that when paired with the right person, he'd make a nice hound. It looks like Tim and Griz are going to raise heck with the coon population for a long time to come based on what I've heard over the phone....I'll be looking forward to visiting with you Tim and maybe seeing Griz go when Dave and I head down to Troy in May....Good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise...

Tom, the thing I liked from Griz last night hunting solo was listening to him set it up. With company, he seems to be a bit racing and rammy, just coming treed. He does have a nice tenor voice that carries rather well. I am still amazed that he stays as controlled as he does for the energy he has. On the lead, he appears to look like a loose cannon. lol I started him out with Ol' Mark, which is a 10-15 minute patch dog and some of that rubbed off, because in about 15 minutes, he will circle back around. For an old man, that is definately a plus.

Turned out good, you can even see a few rain drops. Not too many times you tree a coon in the rain in February out here. Hunting with Shelly and Shaker I like what Rabble threw. I've only hunted with Yank that one night but he looked good too.

Good stuff...

Yep, that's more like it. The dogs look good and sound good together. We had a couple of nice days in a row now too and we're looking forward to a few more before it gets back more to normal. We're enjoying it while we can...every day is a day closer to spring. If we get the warm and rain they're predicting over the next couple of days, it will make a big dent in the snow and it won't be soon enough for me. It can snow a lot in March in this part of the country but at least it doesn't last so long like when it comes early in December.

Good hunting you guys, I'll look forward to seeing more.

Pastor Mike,

I didn't... and we do... :-) I've been so up to my neck in homework that I've neglected a couple people. I apologize, and I promise that I will give you a call this week. I have class every 1st, 2nd and 4th Saturday and Sunday. This upcoming weekend is my weekend off, so there will be no excuse this go-round.

Training

Ramon...we haven't actually started formal training yet but Dave did drag the coon out the other day to fire up the pack. You have never seen such a ruckus as what was going on with those hounds trying to get after that cage coon.

We still have about a foot of snow on the ground on the north sides and any side hills slanting away from the sun. Some of the hills are getting bare but it has to get better than what is is before we'll start the full program up. This time of year, it doesn't really pay to do drags when you've gotta plow snow with your shins to walk...the dogs cheat and just follow your tracks in the snow.

Anyway, it rained a bit today and it won't get below freezing over night so by next weekend, I'd bet a lot of the snow is going to be gone and we can get with it. Dave has been out hunting a couple of times but when the dogs get up on the ridges, it gets old pretty quick trying to bust snow while climbing that steep crap.

Anyway, it won't be long...

Pastor Mike,

I believe that I have school that weekend. If not, I may stop by for one night of hunting.

T-Top,

Ice is surely a differance maker. The snow here hasn't been bad, but the slight melting and re-freezing left us with a solid sheet of ice for weeks. We're all clear here now and hunting has been good. Take care and we'll talk soon.

Finally had a warm up

Northwest PA has been under a heavy snow until the past couple days. Finally had melting going on. Perfect conditions last night. Slushy snow, 50's, and being able to see the whole "story" in the snow. It was great seeing all the easy to see tracks.

T-Top Silk opened up before I put the tailgate back up, literally. Took off so fast down through the woods I was a little worried what it was- but, as you can see from the tracks, it was the intended target. Silk ran like crazy last night. The coons were really on the move. It was neat to see how they took a track when you could see dog and coon tracks so well.

Tom, here's a couple of pictures of Silk in action. She hadn't been in the woods for a while but picked right back up where we left off. She's doing really well. Pictures may look a little blurry but that was caused by the heavy fog. Rolled in thicker than pea soup a couple of times. Had to use hi-beam on the headlight a couple times just to see my feet, lol!

Take care, Chris

Huntman

It's good to see little Silk turning into a nice coondog.

I was there for her initial training repetitions as she belonged to my good buddy. I know one thing, she is a physically tough little dog and has a great mouth.

Keep up the good work with her!

Thanks Chris (awsome name by the way, lol)

You guys certainly got her started on the right foot. It's also nice to have it in the genes too.

Your right, she may be a little on the small side but boy does she get up and go. You wouldn't think her voice would be that loud for her size but there's not much trouble hearing her.

She's a pleasure to hunt with for sure.

Take care and nice to hear from you, Chris
