I sent an email to Mr. Kellam loking at how lately in the hog dog world they have comp hunts where biggest hog, most etc. Now if guides were judges and time limits were established on finding and baying wild game it is possible. Hogs are such a problem in the South that it is at least a start because TV has done us a favor were hogs are looked at as the enemy. A single, pair and pack could be judged. In time I can see where bears or big cat attacks could help us out. I see it on the East Coast from family members where the cute bear are not so cute when they break into your home and ravage it. We know the result were children will be hurt or killed the public opinion on chasing big game could change. Might be a pipe dream. AS for me I am gong to keep thinking looking at FCI rules throw out thoughts to the UKC. Why not look at coyotes as well. Not pen coyotes but wild I know a lot of bear guys are adding them to their dogs so their bear dogs get more work in the off season. If you have never looked at the FCI hunt tests look at them there are all kinds and the UKC is the biggest supporter of working papered dogs in the US and are best hope in this arena again just my opinion.

How's the hunting been over there? I tried to see if there were any hunts over there, but was told everybody folded up. I was hoping for a hunt/show on same week as a French Ring trial. But looks like both venues are doing nothing in UT this year. I was kinda hoping to hit UT this year, it's been a few years.

I just got home from making a cut for lion, didn't find any tracks and so I ran my dogs down the road about five miles. I have a bear and lion tag in my pocket, and also have two buddies with lion and bear tags as well, so I'll most likely get out on the hill plenty this spring. So are you running coon or bear hounds--or both?

As you know, I don't get around very many houndsmen whether they are coon, bear or lion hunters. I have a couple friends I'll load hounds with from time to time, but that's about it. All a person does is show these youngsters where and how to find game and then they are back with their buddies to kill it. And because our lion population has been hammered for the past fifteen years, and because our bear population has always been one of the lowest in the West I'm not going to contribute to that......

I got a call from Hal yesterday wanting me to come to the Utah Houndsmen Meeting in Vernal next Tuesday night. His agenda is to attempt to talk some of these guys out of killing the female lions when they catch them. I told Hal there wasn't any need for me to attend because I haven't had a hunter kill a bitch lion over my dogs in over ten years--with the exception of one that was taken in a state park at the request of Parks and Fish & Game because of safety issues. I also told him that I'd continue taking lions when they come into conflict with people, the Fish & Game or become a safety issue.........

If you make a road trip to Utah give me a shout...........
