I wouldn't go quite that far to say they were all but extinct. There has been an increase in monkey face dogs for sure, but they have always been around. Many of the old Galloway hounds were monkey face, and they were used in a big way as a foundation for the bluetick breed. I have copies of the old Blue Books, Full Crys, Bloodlines, and American Cooners, and it is really interesting to see all of the monkey face blues that were offered for stud, or used for breeding. Many of todays blues go back to Welsh's Blue Warrior.......a beautiful hound....sold for an unheard of price in his day of $ 1,000.00......and was monkey-faced. Many of the J.V. hounds bred by Frank Findley, and hounds used by Jake Sides were all monkey face. They have always been around. One of the biggest differences is that years ago people did not think as much about it as they do now. It just wasn't a big deal to most bluetick houndsmen, and breeders.
I have a dog in my kennel right now that is monkey face, and he is a grandson to Dryfork Blue Spud......but not through Bullet.
I do not view it as a fault, but that would be a prefrence depending on the individual.
