Well wouldn't you know it. A buddy of mine who had got out of coon hunting a couple years back, wanted to go see The Wicked Lizzie in action.

4 drops, 4 trees, two were big, two were a bit small, and NOT A COON IN SIGHT!!!!

Well Ole Lizzie looked like a slick treeer last night LOL. Just when you think they are really putting things together, they give you that puppy performance, just to bring you back to reality, LOL.

I enjoyed hunting with my old friend anyway, I'm not sure he had as much fun as I did, but it beat watching re-runs on TV.

John and I was able to get to take a hunt on Monday night with Dave. It had been about 3 or 4 years. We had I wonderful time. We seen one coon and had a few dens and yes a couple of slicks too. That's all just part of hunting dogs worked good together. We are hoping to get to do it again in the near future.

Tom & John

It sure was my pleasure to be able to hit the woods with You guys once again. I really enjoyed it. Ole Trouble and Lilly were sounding strong when we went across that big bottom and up the other side to them. I sure loved the music they all were making when we got there.

One thing is for sure, If a man has to see a coon in every tree to enjoy this sport, then they probably won't be in it long before they find something else to do.

God Bless my friends and thanks again for coming over!!!!

THE HOOPER RIDGE WICKED LIZZIE and I got back to the timber last night for the first time in about 10 days.

Took her by herself, she treed 2 singles that I was able to see, one big den that ran for about 550 yards before climbing and one empty in a grapevine mess that she had worked for about 450 yards. There might have been a coon around there somewhere but it sure was not in the tree she was barking up. That coon could have went 30 yards in any direction from there but I'm certain it was not on that tree.

She is certainly coming along nicely, and I'm sure getting the bug to stick her in a couple hunts to see how she holds up when put in a cast of multiple dogs. Just hoping I don't draw a mean dog while she is still so young.

If you have a picture of your favorite hound please feel free to post it here and tell a little about what the dog is out of as well as how it operates.. Thanks for reading!!!

Just wanted to thank my dear friends Robbie Thompson and Jamie Grover for bringing me a 7 generation pedigree of Ole Holly's mother, Nt.Ch Swamp's Slamen up Sally. If it had not been for Robbie's willingness to drive all the way from Ohio to Mr. Wyatt Wight's house, Ole Sally would not have found her way back to the Buckeye state . Thanks again my friends.

I have been working today on updating Lizzies pedigree especially so of the dogs way back. If you get a chance please take another look at her pedigree. I hope you enjoy.

Thanks to all for reading!!!

Doug You are so very correct. Why this ole goat is actually looking forward to some spring hunts to see if Ole Lizzie and I can still keep up with these young guns. Lizzie will probably come closer than I at keeping up LOL!!! Thanks again Doug for checking in on us!!!

Final Prep

Well THE HOOPER RIDGE WICKED LIZZIE and myself made our final prep hunt last night for our 1st attempt at competition hunting this coming weekend at Malta, Ohio.

Lizzie looked sorta good, then sorta bad, then pretty good, LOL.

I didn't cut loose till about 8:20. We turned loose in a small bottom, she struck within about 75 yards. wasn't a hot track, but not cold/cold either. She worked up the bottom and then turned up a side hollow. The farther she went the better she was moving. She took this track all the way to the top of the main ridge and then went over the ridge. Distance was about 750 yards. I walked this old road that my father had told me 25 years ago, existed. This old road led me to an old barn and old house foundation that my father had lived in when he was 19/20 years old. The year was probably 1945 as he told me about the last time he seen his older brother alive, and walking that old mud road home after saying good bye to his brother on their final squirrel hunt just a few months before as he was killed in action in World War II. As I retraced those steps it brought back many feelings of gratitude for the many, many nights I have spent with my Dad following these Ole coon hounds. Dad will soon be 92, and though a stroke, alzheimers, and dementia has taken it's tole, Pappy's eyes still light up when he hears a story of a good coon hunt.

Sorry, back to my story. Upon arrival at that tree, which was a leaning tree that layed into a big poplar, I could find no coon. So I leashed Ole Lizzie up and headed back out the top of that ridge to where the road turned back down the hollow. I cut her loose in an attempt to hunt her back towards the truck. Well that didn't work so well, after about 3 minutes and no strike, I looked on my garmin and seen that Lizzie was already 285 yards back to the same tree I had just pulled her off of. She starts treeing and I'm on my way back trying to figure out just how I'm gonna correct this thing of her going back to a tree. Well to my surprise when I arrived, Lizzie was treed on a different big tree just up the hill from her previous tree. Low and behold she had two coons up that tree. That kind of tickled me, to think that she knew she had left a coon but found a different tree to tree on that quickly. Probably total time between when I turned her loose till she started treeing again was about 5 minutes, and she covered 285 yards to get there. This crazy sport of coon hunting!!!!

Wish me luck this weekend as I'm sure I am gonna need a truck load LOL!!

Thanks for reading!!

UPDATE

Thanks Tom, I sure appreciate that. Last night had some good & some bad, LOL.

I drew a WIDE open 2 yr. old babbling walker and a 5 Yr. old silent walker. 3 dog cast.

1st drop- Ole auto matic comes of that strap wide open like a 450 suzuki off the starting block, LOL. Lizzie keeps her mouth shut for about the 1st 50/75 yards then she comes open too. Ole auto get called for 1st strike as soon as Lizzie starts to open. I tell the handler his dog is probably babbling and mine is now too. Now Ole Lizzie has never been around a dog quite like this just yet so I have no idea what she is going to do. After they get in 400 yards or so and mine is still opening pretty good I realize they must now be running a track so I strike Lizzie. Right after I strike Lizzie this other gentleman strikes Ole Silent. I tell him I never heard him open and ask the other handler of he heard the 3rd dog. He says he thinks he heard another dog but wasn't sure. Just as dogs start locating I now hear Ole silent, LOL. Dogs tree, I'm in for 3rd tree. Big Den. On the way back to the truck I ask the handler of auto if we can expect his dog to come off the strap yakking on every drop and he says ABSOLUTELY NOT, he never does that. Well 2nd drop it happens again, I tell the man immediately that the dogs are babbling. They hush this time after about 30 seconds or less. As soon as they hit the creek the race is on again dogs tree I'm in again for 3rd tree. We see this coon. Now I will say even though Ole AUTO comes wide open off the strap, he is a track driving brute. 3rd drop, Lizzie winds a coon off to my right before we cut loose. I tell the cast there is a track to our right. We cut and Ole auto is cracking it going to the woods but doesn't get pitched. I respect that handler for not calling his dog even though he could have probably gotten away with it at that point because I knew there was a track off to our right within 40 yards. Well Lizzie is in for first strike and this is a blistering 100 yard track with Lizzie and Ole auto coming treed at the same time. I call just ahead of ole auto shutting out ole silent on strike. He trees in, and as we were going to the tree, Lizzie quits treeing and so does auto. we are only about 75 yards from them when they come treed. We bust in and all dogs are at the tree and start treeing just as we can get a light on their exact location. Well guess what, that ole tree is as slick as a baby's butt. Can you say OUCH!! I had the big end of both on that track, LOL. We recut right there and they strike again within another 75 yards (probably same coon) and Ole auto is driving hard with Lizzie trying to keep up. BANG Ole auto trees agin followed by Lizzie, and then Ole silent, who was shut out again on that track on strike. We find this coon as well.

Last drop we have 23 minutes left. Cut loose but by now Ole auto is winding down a bit and only opens for the first 50 yards or so and Lizzie and the other dog don't draw a bark. So we wait about 3-4 minutes and Auto comes open followed by lizzie but this is a much colder track. They trail in to about 900 yards and Ole silent comes treed with 2 minutes left in the hunt. Ole auto covers and they are half heartedly treeing. Lizzie never trees on this tree. We walk in and is a big ole snag with a wood pecker hole on one limb that is broke off on the back side. They vote to circle, even though we are all pretty sure it was empty. At least I though it was and that ended the hunt. I was proud of Lizzie for not backing, but wished she would have gotten treed somewhere else instead of coming into the tree after about 4 minutes of shining time and squalling. But Oh well we will get them on another night LOL. Good hunting to all!!!

Tuneup

Well Ole Lizzie and I been out a couple nights this week tuning up for our local UKC hunt that will be going on this Saturday at Glouster, Ohio. For all you guys looking for an easy cast win, come on over and draw out with THE HOOPER RIDGE WICKED LIZZIE and yours truly.

We will be hunting in this one, "God Willing" and hoping for a cast win and a good night of fellowship with some of our local and hopefully some not so local coon hunters.

Been busy also watching my 12 year old grandson playing in his basketball tournaments this week. Man has that been fun!

Turned loose earlier this week in a wind storm, "whew" I though the timbers were gonna crack my skull. Last night was much better though it was snowing just a bit, Lizzie looked pretty good. 1st drop 175 yds struck, ran the track about 100 yds to the top of a ridge and had the coon. Took her over that ridge and cast her down the other side, she went in 575 yds and garmin showed her treed but I couldn't hear her. So I walked out on a pipeline and sure enough there she was sitting in the bottom of a BIG hollow cracking it like she was looking at it. When I got to her, by golly goodness, she was pretty much looking at it. Had another coon up a small tree. I sure loved that but OH MY GOSH what a LONG haul it was back out of that valley. So I decided against climbing that pipeline and decided to hunt her back up another hollow back toward the truck. Picked up a bad track, worked it for about 45 minutes covering only about 400 yards and half heartedly treed on a big poplar, but no coon seen. I think she knew she didn't have it, but just couldn't work it any further. LOL But That's coon hunting, and I had a great time. Now look out boys cause we are gonna rest up for Saturday night, and as I often say in my sleep.
(TREE MY DOG)!!!!!!!!

Hi Tom, Thanks so much for checking in on Ole Lizzie and I.

Lizzie didn't look to bad last night, but the stars just didn't align for any championship points to be earned, LOL. She won her cast, but we were unable to get a coon treed on the outside to be scored. Lizzie split treed once with three other dogs treed, but was on a den. One other good thing I saw was that she wouldn't back the other dogs on a slick tree made me feel pretty good. That is two casts in a row that I have seen her not cover on a slick tree. She needs to get better at moving on and having a coon to really capitalize when other dogs make that kind of mistake. 1st track she had 1st & 2nd, Second track she had 1st and split 1st, on that den. Third drop she had 1st strike and wouldn't cover on the slick tree. Now down to 3 dog cast. Third drop, she had 2nd & 3rd on a big big vine mess, with a GIANT nest that the coon was probably in but we couldn't get it to look. Last drop down to two dogs, had 1st and 1st on a giant den poplar. And that ended the hunt. Over all, I am liking what I am seeing, Lizzie just needs to improve on her locating quickness, and on her ability to move past dogs treed empty and produce a coon on the outside. When we over come those two obstacles, she will then be a force to be reckoned with. But until then, she is just another nice young dog, LOL!

Yes James, I still get on Facebook, but must admit I am not a very knowledgable person on how to use it, LOL. I do check on it most every day once or twice a day, but lately I have not posted many pictures or or video's on that English Coon hounds group that I like to look at. If you have tried to send me something on there I do apologize as I have very little knowledge of how to touch bases with folks unless I see something posted either in my friends group, or in that English Coon Hounds group. I will look and see what I can find on there. Good Luck with Ole Singing Tapp Whitey, I really like his breeding. I'm still hoping to get down and take a hunt with you. Headed to West Virginia this week to hunt with a dear friend of mine, and take advantage of their last week of harvest season. Take care guy's and AGAIN, thanks for checking in on ole Lizzie and I.

BTT- Well I been a little lazy with the hunting for the past couple to 3 weeks. Not getting out much. Been dealing with my Pappy's needs who just turned 92 Monday March 13th.

Though his needs are great at this time in his life, the blessings God provides through his companionship, are nothing short of AMAZING. So Grateful for God in my life during these trying times, and so grateful I still get to go see my pops smile and chuckle when I tell him his old coon hunting buddy has stopped by for a visit.

Thanks for the support James. It ended up not being very productive for Lizzie and I, LOL. I got a little frustrated with her performance after about 75 minutes of hunting time and picked her up and headed for the house. I probably should have stayed in as the lead dog in the cast only had one coon and I only had 25 minus, but I wasn't liking what I was seeing out of mine so I picked her up LOL.

Sure hope the next one feels a little better. Thanks for checking in on us, and good hunting!!!

Been a while since we have had much to say about Ole Lizzie. I haven't hunted real hard this summer, just getting her out enough to keep her from going pen stale. We were out again last night, and she didn't look too aweful bad, LOL.

I will try to post some pics when I figure out how to use a new hosting site.

1st drop, Lizzie struck in at about 125 yards, ran a short track, maybe another 100 yards or so and come treed. Seen the coon.

2nd drop, she went in about 425 yds, struck a good track, ran it down to the main hollow, then down that hollow past me, and ended up in a rock hole. Total track length was probably 450-600 yards.

3rd drop, went in about 225 yds, struck a colder track, trailed another 125 yds, tried to tree but couldn't set down, moved on another 85 yes or so, and just kept half hearted treeing. I walked in and she was on a rough side hollow with a log laying across the hollow from one side to the other. She couldn't figure out where the coon went so she just kept treeing up on that log, and then getting down. I didn't feel like moving her on as it was already 1-2 in the morning, so I snatched her up and headed for the truck. Good Hunting to ALL.

Good Deal Tim, I'm glad to see her get the opportunity to go to the BIG dance. I think you will have a blast at that hunt.

I know I always did, when hunting in the Grand division. Maybe after this coming season Ole Lizzie will improve enough to finish to grand. If so, then you can expect that I will be there next year. Maybe I will get to come out for a bit this year, only time will tell. Good Luck buddy!

Tuning UP

Been getting out a bit now that the weather is cooling down. Had Ole Lizzie out again tonight looked pretty good for a pot licker. Finished with a BANG!!!! and home by 11:30 after 3 drops. Now for all those folks that think the worst of all situations, the term BANG is referring to the way she came treed (BANG) and its full throttle tree dog. Love it LOVE IT!!!! No gunfire on this hunt!, so y'all can relax now ha ha.

The second track lasted about 30 minutes, covered about 900 yds and finished on a den but man it was an enjoyable race, just Lizzie against that coon, and the coon won that one, lol.

Hoping to take her to the Ohio State Championship and see how she stacks up against real coon dogs, LOL.

Good Hunting to ALL

GONE HUNTING

Ole Lizzie and I are headed north tonight to hunt with Mr. Darryl Varner of Paulding Ohio.

I curious to see how Ole Lizzie handles those patch woods like they have up that way.
