I don't think that it is that bad. I can tell who it is by the way that the toenails are dug into the tree. I know where that comes from. Tom, I am also watching this progress as well. I wish that we could fast foward a couple of months to May and June. I think that this summer will be an exciting time for the Redbone breed. With the crosses made and being made, there should be several extra nice young dogs to carry the Redbone breed forward. I saw on another post where a Rabble grandpup got a nite hunt win. It looks like the winning tradition carries on.

Another night

Hey Mark, that's a good shot of three nice males treeing the way they're supposed to tree. It's nice to see them getting down to the business of treeing game and doing it right no matter if it's coons or lions...that's good stuff.

Dave came out tonight to load up Moose and go for a hunt...it's snowing like crazy and I was pretty much figuring it to be a dead night but...I guess when he gets the bug to go, he's going to go no matter what. I hope he doesn't end up having to walk to the top of some big ridge to collect him off a tree in the middle of a snow storm but...I guess I've been there...done that myself so we'll just have to wait and see.

I was looking forward to getting some training in this weekend but with the snow coming, I decided to get out and haul in some wood before it gets buried deeper than it already is. The dogs are doing good, in good shape and full of energy waiting for night to fall. It's kind of funny to see because Show Time and Crook are right at the gate with the big dogs acting like they want to go and they've never been in the woods yet. It won't be long and I think we'll be talking about what those two are doing in the woods...good stuff.

There will be more to come where Moose is concerned...he's got the goods so now it's just a matter of getting down to business on a regular basis. Our spring competition season usually gets going in March with a few hunts close by so if we get enough decent weather so we can get these dogs out, we'll get them fired up and see how it goes.

Winter

The last two mornings started out at 10 below zero but warmed up to around 25 above during the day. It's hard to believe that it can warm up 35 degrees during a day and still be 7 degrees below freezing but...that's winter in Wisconsin.

I know there are a lot of folks across the country experiencing snow and cold and are probably suffering cabin fever as bad as we are up here so maybe if we all keep thinking spring...it will start to warm up and let us get in the woods. I'd love to get back to training with S.T. and Crook but below zero mornings are a bit much for even an old northern Yank like me.

All the females we had that were in heat are finally all mated and things are getting back to normal. Yank and Moose are both ready to hit the timber if the weather would just cooperate a little bit and let us get out.

We will be expecting pups in mid March from Yank and Val and the third week in March from Moose and Leinie and the last week in March from Yank and Angel. If things work out, that should keep me busy for a little while.

I plan to keep a pup or two back from each of these crosses to start but these pups will all be for sale.

Training day...

It was pretty nice today so Dave and I did a little bit of training with a couple of real nice prospects.

This is Show Time

This is Crook

Two real nice young hounds

Show Time is out of Nite Ch. PR T-Top Northwood's Yankee and Dual Ch. PR T-Top Dark Angel.

Crook is out of Yank and Pr T-Top High Voltage Val.

I have started a lot of young hounds over the years and Show Time is as nice a prospect as I've had the pleasure to mess with at his age. He is 8 months old and is ready for the woods right now. My expectation is that he would track and tree his first night out and do it like he knows what he's doing. He is very LOUD of mouth and good looking to boot. He shows the kind of sense, in my opinion, that only shows up in very few dogs and the kind that will stand him out from the crowd. Although Show Time is out of Yank, he reminds me a lot of Rabble Rouser both in how he acts and looks. I think he will make a real nice addition to Bristol Ridge Kennels in Ohio.

Crook started a little slower and didn't really show much interest in a coon until about 10 months of age but he has transitioned into an extremely intense young hound and he hates a coon like a hound dog should. He has a squall mouth that is LOUD and ramps it up the longer he sits there. I really think he's going to turn into a coon hound if put in the woods and given the opportunity. He isn't going to win many shows but if you're looking for a legitimate prospect that carries some top blood in his veins, then he can be what someone is looking for.

I am ready to make a deal on Crook if someone out there is looking for a really well bred prospect.

Yep...

I know they aren't going to be hard to hear in the woods at night Carl, they've both got plenty of mouth and that's for sure.

I forgot to mention that we have another little prospect to talk about now. We mated Yank to a female that is a Grand daughter to old Rat, I guess making this a first cousin cross seeing as how Yank is also a Grandson to Rat. We got the pup yesterday, a 12 week old male and he has all kinds of mouth on him too.

After we were done training, we dragged the coon up by the kennel and let Leinie and Shadow have a look just to fire them up a little bit, and this little pup came out of his house and was looking at the cage with some interest. I put the cage up close to the kennel wire and he lit up at it like he was mad.

The owner of the litter said that they have been terrorizing the cats for weeks now, treeing them up the barn poles and anywhere they could make them climb. He had put a cage coon out for them to find just to see what they'd do and they all lit up on it like a pack of hound dogs and acting like they meant business...I love it when that happens.

I should have gotten the camera out but I figured that by next week he'd at least be used to running around the yard so we'll let him tag along and see what he does outside the confines of the kennel and then I'll try and get some pictures. Early starting is a trait we have bred for over the years and it's nice to see that Yank is carrying on the tradition.

Show-Time Coon Stopper

Tom I enjoyed the talk Sunday and can't wait for the weather to break so I can bring your pup out of Haze up and pick Shadow and ST up. Show-Time really looks good on the hard wood and is a good looking son of a gun to boot. That loud mouth is also nice. Dave P.S. Who dose he look like Buck?

First place winner

It didn't hit me right away and I apologize for not noticing that Dutch Harvey and his Dad won first place registered at Redbone Days last week with a real nice female...

This female is out of Dual Gr. Ch. PR T-Top Rabble Rouser and Gr. Ch. PR Crazy Mountain Sassy. This is the same cross that produced Pastor Mike's Dual Gr. Ch. PR Soggy Bottom Shadow and Dual Gr. Ch. PR Hill Top and T-Top Shelly.

Dutch has a nice kennel of Red dogs and from the looks of it, will be able to produce good ones for a long time to come.

Nice job Dutch and tell your Dad congratulations from me also, it was a nice weekend and a special moment in time for sure.

Last of Feb

Dave loaded up Yank and Moose last night and headed out. It was a pretty nice night temperature wise but a full, bright moon and still 15-16" of snow on the ground. Turns out that he had a pretty good night...treed 3 on the outside.

Moose and Yank...

Last drop, he cut Moose alone. He hunted deep, struck a decent track and went over the ridge. Got around and found him treed hard.

What's a weekend without a little pup training...eh?
Show Time Coon Stopper...(Nite Ch. PR T-Top Yankee and Dual Ch. PR T-Top Dark Angel.)

Crook...(Nite Ch. PR T-Top Yankee and PR T-Top High Voltage Val

We received our litter pick stud fee pup last Sunday and after a week of learning the ropes, we decided to introduce him to the coon today for the first time. He's 15 weeks old and these next pictures are a nice display of a real good progression for the first time face to face with a coon...and by himself.

We call this guy, T-Top Crazy Cuz
First look...

Closer look...

Meanin' business...

On the wood...

Yank and Moose looked good last night and with a break in the weather, it won't be long and they'll be back in hunting shape.

Crook and Show Time (Stopper) are both looking very good. We ran a 4-wheeler track around today and made the drag down the wheel track. It's easy for young dogs to just run the tire track once they get a head of steam but at some point they have to realize that there's no coon scent and double back to find the cut in point. These two pups ran it hard, blew it by about 20 feet but immediately came back around, cut it right and located and treed hard....and I mean treed hard...and loud. These are nice prospects, and showing very good progress...in fact, they're about ready for the woods. If we were on bare ground right now instead of deep snow...they'd be tagging along right now and I believe we'd be looking at training pictures of them on the wood at night with Yank and Moose...it's going to be a fun ride with these two young males.

The little male we're going to call Cuz...what can I say? He's just 15 weeks old and he furred up like a big dog and was treeing hard today. He found that coon and the hair stood up on his back like he was mad and it wasn't long and he had talked himself into going face to face with a big coon and then sat and treed like he meant it.

Cuz is out of Yank and a female that shows Rat as her grand sire on one side and Pete as her grand sire on the other side....good stuff or what?

You'll hear the names of these pups again somewhere down the road.

Pictures

Tom I sure enjoyed the pictures and reading about the hunt. Sounds like Dave had a real good time. It is supposed to warm up here by the week end and I hope get rid of this snow. Had to come into work yesterday for 3 hours to get the snow moved so the trucks could get inthis week. Hope that's the last time for that. I will be up soon. Dave P.S. Cuz looks good also.

"Back in shape?", my goodness, poor lil Moose is as big as his momma was 3 wks ago when I got her from Buck. He had to sit down to tree he is so fat! Those dogs sure do live the good life up there in the winter. I bet that he will look a lot different when the middle of June rolls around. I can't wait. I hear that he has a brother that is doing pretty well also. He had another brother in NE Tennessee that was doing so well some low- life decided that he needed him more than his owner did.

Yep...

Two things that help to keep dogs alive in the winter up north...let them put on a little fat with plenty of good feed and fresh, unfrozen water and good warm housing. He's young enough that once we put him back in the hills, he'll be hard as an oak bark shingle in no time. Dave says he sounded pretty good from track to locate to tree and he got his reward to boot.

Yank and Moose will both be in top shape by the time spring settles in, they won't be lacking from time in the woods once it's fit to be out there regular.

I'm sorry to hear about those folks losing that pup down in TN, it's a shame that things have to happen that way.

I think Moose will make some waves in the not too distant future Richard, he's got the goods. We'll have a litter of pups out of him on the ground in a few weeks and I'm looking forward to them.

Hey Dave...Cuz is going to be something special by the looks of it. He's going to be fun to start and I'd about bet he'll be in the woods tracking and treeing by 6 months of age and after a good season this coming fall, he might be ready to make waves already by next spring...I really like what I'm seeing out of these Yank pups.

Moose

Dave loaded up Moose again tonight to see if he could get him on another good track or two alone.

Moose...lookin' good...on the wood...

Turned out to be a pretty good night...struck two tracks, caught one on the ground and made a tree.

The Rabble and Sally cross was a good one...I wish we could have done it again. Hopefully Moose can reproduce like his sire and dam and continue to help keep the program strong for years to come...he sure has the foundation to get it done.

Still lots of snow and the temperature dropped to 20 in just a few hours from a high near 40 today. These aren't the conditions we want to see when trying to get a young dog into hunting shape for spring and summer but it all helps to build hunting condition again.

More to come...

Hi Tom Moose looks good on the wood. And the young dogs look good also and the little just has to make you smile. Sure alot of satisfaction when they do it right but good breeding always helps. So keep up the good work.

Moose sure looks good. I guess we should give Dave a little pat on the back. First for going hunting on these kind of nights and he sure is doing great on the picture taking now. Way to go Raven. Dave

Keep it up Dave. You are my new hero. I never got to see Rabble tree, but Moose looks just like his Momma on a tree. She keeps her hind feet back off the tree and wraps her front feet around it with her chest rubbing up against it. I don't see Moose's eyes bugging out and all of his teeth flashing, though! I saw on another post (Roger Hall's) where a female out of Sally's littermate sister was producing nice pups so there is no reason why Moose should not reproduce also. Maybe Rabble's grandpups will be even better than he was. I hope that Tom Tom and Chick can carry on the T-Top tradition.

Good night out

Dave loaded up again tonight and hit the woods. He was back home by 9:30 PM and had a few pictures to share.

This is Yank...

These next two photos are a first...the first time in the woods for a real nice young prospect...

It's fun to see a nice prospect in training show how it all pays off at night in the woods.

Dave hooked up Yank and Show Time Coon Stopper to lead them down to a creek bottom bordering a standing strip of corn. Both dogs lifted their heads and started opening on the lead. Dave cut them and they struck quick and the chase was on. Yank was pushing hard and Stopper was sounding off and driving the track with him and keeping up pretty good. The track went to the top of the ridge and the dogs hung up for a short time with a couple of locates but then Yank busted out and was going hard again. Stopper didn't take long and he was caught up again and both dogs went down the other side. It took a good while to get up to where he could hear them again but when he did, both dogs were treed hard and Stopper was sounding real good. The track covered 1200 yards and Dave had about half of that to cover yet to get to the dogs. When he got in close, he could hear Stopper quiet down but by the time he got to the tree, he was back in there treeing although not as hard as at the start. Dave shined and they had the meat so he praised them up good and headed out.

This is the first night in the woods for Woofter's Show Time Coon Stopper. He struck off the lead, drove the track and located and came treed like he'd done it before. Over the years, we have shown some real nice young dogs in training and then their initial trips to the woods and time after time, they show us all that they have what it takes to make a dog if we'll just invest the time and effort. It takes time for a pup to grow and mature but as we've watched these young dogs, generation after generation, one thing should be clear...a good foundation of breeding and attention to training along with the proper exposure will pay off.

Education...Opportunity...Repetitions...and of course, good stock to start with.
