last night hunt
Had a couple of friends over with a nice little SR breed female, And I hunted Joe. 1st drop cut dogs they worked out about 350 yards to the west, then did a big u back towards us, and then back to the north. Joe opened and the female opened at about 400 yards. Wasn't much track to it. They went less than 100 yards. Joe picked at a couple of trees in a small 20 yard area. Finale he cam down hard rolled it over and stayed. The female backed him. They where treed on a big cherry tree. We found the coon and headed back to the truck. 2nd drop we cut lose on the edge of the woods that has a lot of cherry trees. Joe opened and was picking at a couple of trees. him and the female went back and forth in about a 100 yard area. Joe was opening, But the female hadn't yet. Joe finale worked the track to the right, went about 200yards and come treed. The female backed him, We went in and they where treed on a maple tree. We couldn't find the coon. 3rd drop. Both dogs opened of the lead. We were on the edge of a corn field and woods with a lot of cherry trees on the edge. The female treed in short order about 100 yards in the woods. Joe kept working the track all around her. She did a nice job taking all the pressure Joe was putting on her. Joe treed a bout 3 minutes later on a big cherry tree about 5 yards from the female. Both trees touched and would have been counted as one in a hunt. We found two coon tucked away in the cherry tree. The young female did a nice job taking all the track pressure Joe put on her. 4th drop. Both dogs opened as soon as we cut them. They took the track about 400 yards beating and bang all the way. It wasn't pretty. Joe came treed. We waited a few minutes and went to him. It was a dead ash tree that went in to a couple of other small trees. As we where shining the female came in to the tree. Their could have been a coon, But I think it was slick. We called it a night.

1st drop Joe hunted out about 300 yards did a big u at about 200 to 150 yards doing a lot of zinging and zagging. When he checked in I let him know he needed to go harder. He is pretty smart and got the message. With in 2 or 3 minutes he was struck at 570 yards. I walked about 100yards from him to a field, for an easier walk. He ended up treed at about 770 yards. He was treed on a maple with to hemlocks on each side. Could not find the coon. on the way out he opened on the lead so I cut him lose. He barked twice and come treed on a small cherry tree that went up into a big cherry tree. I could see the tree good and did not find a coon. I felt it was slick. Last drop Joe struck at 450 yards took a track and worked it for about 1/2 hr. He did a lot of circles and marked a lot of trees before he final come on a tree right and rolled it over to a hard every breath chop. When I got to him he was on a big willow covered with grape vines and grapes. It was along the edge of a corn field with a bunch of brush piles on one side, and a creek in a 5 foot ditch on the other side. I did not find the coon but it could have been any where in that mess. I could tell by the garmin that he had circled in the corn and into the brush piles a couple of times. I called it a night.

I hunted Joe by himself this am. With the moon as bright as its been. I got up and hunted at 4 am. 1st drop Joe left on the run and struck at about 200yards. He took a short track about 150 yards and give out two locates and come treed. He was treed on a small hemlock with another hemlock and a cherry tree all tied together. I could not find the coon. I Only was able to shine one side of the tree . Back side was covered by hemlock trees. I took him of tree and recasted him. He went about 300 yards then worked back to me in a big u . When he came back in I give him two taps with a switch to his but. 300 yards is not going to cut it here. I need him to go at least 600 to 700 yards to work for me. He went back out about 400 yards an hit a tree. He give about 20 chops ,then took a track out. I marked the spot on the Garmin where he had marked the tree. after some beating and banging he come treed. as I was going to him I checked the tree he had marked and seen a coon. When I got to him he was treed on a big maple. I did not find a coon , and wondered if he had back tracked on it. As we headed back to the truck he was winding and was up on his back legs. I cut him lose and he hit a track took it 300 yards and come treed. I seen the coon on the way in. Once I got him tied back I checked the tree again but couldn't find it. When they don't want to look its sure hard to find them. I new he had the coon, so I give him some pats and a couple of good boys and headed for home.

I did not hunt last 2 nights. Turned lose at 5 am on Friday morning treed a pop up with Joe and came home.

We are getting much needed rain. Its rained last 2 days here pretty much non stop. Its a welcome site, we needed it bad. Temp is suppose to go down to 42 tonight. Spent a good portion of the weekend getting ready for winter. It seams to come around faster ever year. My son came home from his 10 day trip to Colorado Monday. I am happy to say that he got a nice 5x6 Elk with his bow. This was his 1st trip out their. He went with two other friends. His friends had two nice ones with in 20 yards of them, but where on able to get a shot. I can still remember when my sons shot their first Buck. It was more excited for them, than I was for myself when I shot my first one. Taking your kids hunting is a great way to have lifetime memories. I should get back in the timber tonight. Rolled in at 4 am this morning. A friend of mine told me that Blueticks don't ever get beat. He said that we just get cheated by Walker dogs. Lol.

The short version:
I scored 150 circle, and the cast winner scored 150+. No cheating, good cast, just didn't get the breaks.

I haven't been in the woods in over a week. Reality set in last week. Highs in the 40s and 50s and low 40s and 30s. Had to use the wood stove for 3 days none stop. I made out my winter to due list, and just didn't have enough left in my tank to go out at dark. Now that Deer bow season has started, I wont get up early and go out. Always best to respect other hunters. If you do you will always have a place to run your hounds. I have two more things to get done on my very large list. My wife helped with my list by adding some of her Honey Due to it. Should be back at it this week. Chief is going to get his turn next. With the company of a young female I need to get started. Congrats to all the Blue dogs that did good at the UKC world hunt. Take care dave

Hay Chief,wanted tell ya, That ,dog Goins is packin is for real hes the Loudest ,Loudest ,Loudest Blue dog period ,I haven't heard a blue dog with that kind of mouth hung on him in years since Mountain Music Man ,and Sally two,Hes diffently got thoses valueable GENES... Ill go to venture hes the loudest bluetick in the U.S,, heck,, I don't have anything in this, except I been huntin with Goins since I was 14 yrs old.you blue men with with weak mouths in your hounds better take a look,its all in the genes,loud hard chop mouth tree dog trees same ever tree,intense loud hurts your hears in their on the wood ,you can hear him ever bit of 4 to 5 miles away,loud,loud loud,you cant hardly hear nothing in their with him , ,,,Later

If I ever get out to your area I sure would like to go for a hunt with you guys. Mr. Perry Metcalf was nice enough to let me try out his litter mate brother. I did buy him, and would like to thank Perry for giving me the chance to own Big Joe. Joe has a nice mouth and is a hard tree dog. My very good friend Mr. Ken Cone is going to be hunting Joe in In. for a while. Their mother, Peaches is just a very average dog, but is a nice tree dog with a good mouth. Peach's Sir Shadow was going to be my next stud dog a few years back, But had to be put down when he got an intestinal blockage. Peaches mom Minnie was out of the same cross as Chris Brinner's Hardware Dog, and the Harpeth River Jack Dog. Shadow and Minnie where two of the hardest tree dogs I ever owned. They both had way above average mouths. They Both where nice hounds. I may make this cross again, But I think I might use some of the Homebrew Blue Dan semen I have stored on Peaches this time. I went to a friends and hunted with his female last night. I took a young green female. His female treed one on the outside. and a slick. my female acted like a pup, but she did get a little exercise. Take care Dave

I have been very busy and haven't been updating lately. Our season opens Sunday night. I have a couple of new projects. I hope they work out. Joe has been hunted 10 out of the last 12 nights in IN. Some good nights, some not so good nights. He couldn't be in better hands. Ken is one of the best when it comes to working with a hound. Take care Dave

Sunday was opening night of coon season. I hunted Dozer by himself. Dozer is out of Pie and Diz. Moon was full and frost set in while I was hunting. 1st drop Dozer struck a good track off the tailgate and took it 700 yards and treed on a hollow beach tree that tied into a hemlock. I couldn't find the coon. Second drop Dozer struck at 200 yards. He took the track about 150 yards and come treed. The tree was slick. I leaded him off tree and recasted him, and he went back to the tree. I went back and cut him again and he went back again. This time I broke off a switch from a tree on the way back. We had a lesson on going back to the tree. I walked ten yards of the tree and cut him lose. Dozer went about 100 yards and struck. It wasn't pretty but he ended up treed at 175 yards from me in a hole in the roots of a tree along a creek bed. It took awhile for him to get treed, and looked like a big pile of spaghetti on the Garmin. I pulled him of that tree/hole and cut him lose about 20 yards from the tree. I was happy to see that his earlier lesson was still fresh in his mind, He didn't go back to the tree. Dozer hit another track left handed at about 200 yards and took it another 200 yards, Give two big locates and come treed hard. It was in a spot that no matter where I went to shine the tree I couldn't see more than ten feet up it. I started back to the truck. On the way back Dozer started to pull on the lead as I crossed a small creek. I cut him lose and he struck. As he worked the track slowly up the creek I was thinking to my self I should have went back to the truck and moved to a new spot. Dozer worked a bad old feeder track up the creek and did a nice job with it. He ended up treed about 500 yards up the creek and about 200 yards left handed from the creek on a big maple. I found the coon ,and rolled it out. We went back to the truck and called it a night.

I hunted a Female I have called Grace and a Young Female out of Logan. The moon was so bright that I could walk threw the woods with my light off. It was 29 degrees and the frost was down early. Grace treed on a hemlock at about 200 yards. The pup stayed with her. I couldn't find the coon. Cut lose again and Grace struck at about 450 yards. Cinch the young female stayed with her. I was getting a bark from Grace about every ten minutes. After about 45 minutes of the same thing I started to them. They where over a half mile away. When I got to them I pulled them out of a beaver swamp. I was glad that the water never was over knee high. I was happy to see that the young female stayed out and showed a lot of interest. I wish I could have rolled one out on her. Next time. When I got back to the truck the frost was thick on the ground. I called it a night.

Dave in your last two post you've described how my past few night of hunting it's been tough going bad tracks, but have managed to tree a few! The all blue chief femAle is looking pretty good I hope with the rain will have some better tracking the next few nights!

Glad to hear your female is coming on. Full moon and frosty nights are always tuff. It always seams to be a little colder and windier on McGinnis hill. I am hunting a young 15 month old male that hasn't had a lot of woods time. I will hunt him 90% of the time by himself. I have some young females that I am getting started. I bought a 4 year old female that hunts the right speed to hunt pups with. She is easy going and handles like dream. I will break out Chief when I need a break from the young hounds. Last nights hunt with Dozer. Had a slick, a hemlock, Den tree and a doubled up pine that I felt was slick, but coon could have been their. Full moon and very heavy frost. Can handle the moon, but the frost is been tuff on the young dog.

It was a nice night to hunt, Probably the best of the season so far. It was dark with cloud cover over the moon and no frost. It was a very short night for me. My hips had not recovered from the night before. I made one drop with Dozer. He struck at 150 yards on a hot one took it 150 yards, had the meat. I rolled it out on him and called it a night.

Dave nice to read about your hunts and the dogs you are getting going and hunting. Wish you luck with all of them. In my opinion patience is the key to working with young dogs no matter if they start off like a ball of fire or take a little longer to get going. Take care and happy hunting.

Patience is the key to developing a young hound. Its funny how that works. As I have gotten older I have become much more patient with my kids, But less patience with a young hound. I haven't figured that one out yet. I have started to hunt the Logan female. We are going to have nice weather all week. I will keep you posted on how she turns out. take care Dave

With the clocks turned back it was dark here by 7 and I was in the timber by 7:15 The plan was to hunt Grace and a young female. When I left it was very windy, So I decided to take one dog. I hunted Dozer. 1st drop wasn't the best. I cut him lose and he spent a lot of time in about a 100 to 250 yard area from me. after about 15 minutes he popped something barked twice, straight lined something for 300 yards and broke off. I know it wasn't deer we walk by 50 or more every night. He worked his way back towards me with in 150 yards from be. He swung to the west came treed at about 700 yards from me. As I was walking to him I seen 3 sets of eyes setting up in a tree. As I got closer I could tell he was about another 30 yards deeper. As I started to walk to his tree I was thinking to myself how do you miss on 3 coon in one tree. When I passed the tree with the 3 coon, I seen another coon two trees down. Dozer was still a little bit further down. Much to my surprise I seen another coon in the tree he was on. I rolled out and headed back to the truck. As I was walking back Dozer was winding and pulling on the lead. I stopped and looked and seen two sets of eyes in a tree covered with grapes. I thought about cutting him lose, But figured Ill save them for another night and make him have to work for them. 2nd drop Dozer struck a track and took it 800yards treed and had the meat. It took a while and I spent a lot of time in the truck with the garmin to get close to him. Dozer was treed 800 yards from where I cut him, But He covered a lot more ground then that. I moved back and forth with the truck to stay close. It worked out good. I was able to drive down a farmers laneway that I have permission to. I was able to get with in 100yards of him. I rolled it out and headed back to the truck. 3rd drop Dozer struck at 80 yards took a working track down and up a big ravine, and treed on a hemlock. I was on the tailgate and was able to back the truck up about 400 yards and walk up a lane way. I wish it was always that easy. I couldn,t find the coon. I called it a night.

Monday night was another great night to hunt. Temps where in the high 40s and it was dark and calm. I Started out with grace and a young female. Grace struck at about 200yards and took a track about 300yards and come treed with the coon. I rolled it out to her and the female. I was disappointed in the young female she showed no interest in the coon. I tried teasing her with it and she could care less about even grabbing on to it. I couldn't see any sense in wasting any more coon on her until she shows some interest, so I went home and swapped out dogs. I grabbed Dozer. 1st dump Dozer struck at about 150 yards and did a nice job on a good track. He ended up treed with the meat at about 600yards from where he struck. I rolled it out and we went back to the truck. 2nd drop Dozer struck at about 250 yards took a track 375 yards and come treed with the meat. I rolled it out and we went back to the truck. 3rd drop Dozer struck at 175 yards and took a track 300yards to the south and then turned to the east another 200 yards. Then back to the north. I was sitting on the tail gate and could hear the coon go running by me as he crossed the road. Dozer came by a couple minutes later. Dozer took the track another 550 yards north and come treed.. It was a big den tree with a hole about 3 feet up in the tree. Dozer had his nose in the hole chopping every breath. It was one of those night when coon were moving and I think you would have struck one in any good spot. I set on the tailgate each time until Dozer treed. Dozer looked good tonight, but the hunting was very easy.
