Chris I better keep Briar around here because your right when you say I want to be there when he trees his first at night. Its a memory that stays with you. Hope you got your Alpha, your going to wonder how you ever hunted without one. Take Care.

Thanks Dave and Scot. He still has some baby fat on him that will get shaped up as I start hunting him and swimming him in the river as it warms up. He really smoked those 2 turnouts and had the meat when he treed. I think he's going to be a good one. Take Care.

Jamie, thanks for the compliment on the thread. I enjoy putting the updates on here and some pictures to go with them. I also enjoy reading a lot of other good threads on here, even about Walker dogs. lol! Thanks for the well wishes guys, surgery went well and faster than I thought and I am at home now. 4 weeks of doing nothing with this hand and I can get back after those ole coon.

Great thread. I enjoy reading and seeing the pics- so many times we just see Nt. Ch. so-n-so, It's neat to watch you document your time with hounds and family.

Get better so we can see briar turn into a sure-nuff coon treer.... and see bo keep progressing..

I haven't been on here in a few days because I can't hunt and don't have any news to talk about except bad news. Sunday morning I got a severe burning pain and I knew immediately what it was. Hernia. I just had my wrist surgery Friday and I'm doing fine with it because it don't hurt much at all but this hernia is a different beast. I had double hernia surgery when I was a baby and again about 15 years ago when I tore it pulling logs out of the river. The recovery was very painful and took about a month. So we got an appointment to see the DR today and it was just as I suspected. I will have surgery for this Tuesday of next week. When it rains it pours is all I can say because this is really a bummer. To keep myself from getting to bummed out about it while I'm recovering from surgery I am going to post some pictures of hounds from my past along with some stories. I can't make new hunting memories while I'm laid up so will just relive some of my favorites from the past.

Chris, I hope your getting in some good hunting. I know it hasn't been long enough but just wondering if your gyp was showing yet, do you think she took? Take Care.

Take it easy with that hernia, Steve. I hope you get over it and recover as quickly as possible.

I don't know if the gyp (Lei) took or not. Her eating has been erratic the last few days, so maybe that's a sign of pregnancy, but I really don't know. She's thinner now than she was when I bred her because of her decreased appetite. She'll be due April 21 if she took. I've been studying the pedigrees and line breeding coefficients. The line breeding for this litter will actually be very similar to that of Echo II because Lei has so much of that good ole Smokey River blood up close in her pedigree. Also Tramp's dam was a littermate sister to the original Echo. You throw in Maverick's Echo and Cheif blood, and it stacks up nice. This won't guarantee anything, but when you breed you try to stack the odds in your favor.

Mason and I was looking at some pictures tonight and he wanted to put this one on here of us in the hammock and Briar trying to get in with us. He has been real understanding of Paw Paw not being 100% and we have watched a lot of cartoons today and some NASCAR practice and qualifying. Jimmie will start 14th on Sunday and we are looking forward to the race. We been talking about finishing up the pup pen and whelping box as soon as I get over the next surgery. We want to have it ready for Stormy when she comes in and we get her bred to Bocephus.

Thanks Mr. Jack and Chris. These 2 surgery's are just a small bump in the road of life. Will be better soon and back after those coon. Chris those pups will have the good genes stacked up in them for sure. They won't have a choice but to make loud mouthed coonhounds. Got my fingers crossed she took. Yaw keep after them so I have some hunting stories to read about. Whether you tree a coon or not I guarantee it beats setting on the couch. Good Hunting!

Looks like the life of leisure to me- two 'pups' & a hammock. I call my grand kids 'pups' all the time. Only thing better would be if you didn't have to take time off to heal up. It'll seem like forever to get healed, but should be good to feel better. I'll try to give you a couple Iowa coon hunting stories while you're healing. Won't be this weekend though- to much NCAA basketball to watch!!! Take care, Ron.

Thanks Ron. Those pups grow up to fast. Two leg and four leg kind. Enjoy every minute. Take Care and get out there and have some of those good hunts so I have some good reading while laid up.

Today is surgery day and I woke up with Gout in my big toe. I have had it in my knees a few times and its very painful but not as common as in the big toe. Well this morning I have the " common gout " I guess you could say. Hurts like hell and won't make it any better getting up the steps to the house when I get in from surgery. Gout is from eating red meats but also from being over weight and I told my wife that I'm going to start eating like a rabbit if I have to but this weight has to go.

Tomorrow night will be one year since BO treed his first coon alone at night. Seems like a lot longer in ways but then again seems like it went by in a flash. He will be 21 months old Thursday. Hope I feel like reminiscing tomorrow on here about him and what the past year has been like and what it has meant to me to be back into coon hunting.

You certainly have my sympathy on the gout Steve. I've dealt with it since I turned 30. Ibuprofen ,vegetables and black cherries speed recovery the best for me. Red meat bugs mine but seafood is the worst, I quit shrimp altogether. Hope you get back in action soon.

Thanks Jamie, yea that Gout is tough to deal with for a few days. I compare it to a virus in that it has to run its course. You can take the meds, drink plenty water and eat certain things but its going to be on ya for a few days of pain. I hadn't had it in over 2 years and we stopped and bought some boiled crawfish on the way home from DR. Thursday evening. I felt it coming Monday and it was full throttle on me yesterday. Shellfish like shrimp and crawfish can set it off along with red meat but I think being overweight even a little is the biggest problem. I am overweight and starting to do something about that now, Starve! lol! Take care.

Surgery was supposed to take an hour and ended up over 2 hours. I'm home now and on the road to recovery. Lots of pain now but hoping in a few days that gets off of me and should just be sore for a while. They make you get up and walk before you can leave and let me tell you it was tough to do with that gout in my foot but I just pretended I was in BAD BLACK BRANCH SWAMP headed to BO treed and just slowly put one foot in front of another until they were happy and put me in wheelchair and got me in my truck. Beverly drove us home Jimmie Johnson fast and I can't say enough good things about her for the credit she deserves in taking care of me, through better or worse, sickness or health. I would be in a 9 yard bind without her. Yaw take care and send me some good hunting stories to read. Coonhunting or Turkey Hunting!

Glad to see BO has came along the way you wanted. Now, with your medical issues corrected, it's time to look forward to the rest of the summer.

Weather has been good here, except for a little snow Sunday night, so I'll tell you about 3 hunts this past week.
Cub & I took his boys Sat. night with Sammy (TW) & Jesse (Mose/Monkey) female I bought in January. Both struck & Jesse jammed a tree with Sammy a second later & had the coon. Turned them again & both struck with Jesse jamming another tree about 300 yards in & Sammy right behind her- another coon seen. Turned again & nothing was happening until Jesse just fell treed right by a friends house. I had to do a little correcting on this one as she had found the family cat in their yard!!!! Called Sammy in & moved. We cut Jesse alone on last drop & she ran a good track to a den tree.

Monday night- went to $KC hunt & won the cast, Jesse made a den & had a coon, while other dogs made 2 slicks. The coon was in a stump about 2 feet tall. No kidding!! Shortest 'tree' I've ever got plus points from in my life. Only 1 dog could stick its' head in at a time & the coon was letting them know she didn't want to be disturbed.

Today Jesse came in heat & Jo-anne started last week, so I picked up a nice 17 month old male tonight to have something to hunt while these ladies take a 'vacation'. He's Boomer/Harpeth River Jack&Pounder bred. They said just drop him on your way home, he'll tree you a coon, So I did. Picked him up at 7, turned him lose at 9 & was looking at his 1st coon treed at 9:15. I've got a fealing my 8 yr. old grand daughter, Madi, just got the dog for her to hunt at youth hunts this summer. Looking forward to it. Chris, hope Molly gets back to going soon. Those wild hogs are problems in a lot of places. Thanks on the well wishes, I walked out to dog pens and back up steps into house today. I learned from last surgery that the more I walk early on the better it will get in a week or so. But no lifting of any kind for awhile. Take care.

Ron, glad to hear your hitting the timber again and sounds like you have some nice hounds. I had a brother to Pounder years ago I called Kryptonite that started young and was a nice hound, He was the last hound I had before I got out of coon hunting for those 8 years or so. I will post a picture of him later today. Good luck to Madi and you in the hunts, nothing like the excitement in a kids eyes and smile on their face when their dog gets a win on the bench or in the woods, priceless. Got my Bluebook in the mail this evening and its nice. I been like a kid at Christmas waiting on this book as I am every year but this year was extra special as I had done a story on MR. Frank, a poem. another story on Mason and a few ads. They all look great except the printer I guess butchered up the story on MR. Frank as it seems he mixed up some pages and paragraphs are in the wrong places. But if you read it a couple times you can get it sorted out. Mistakes happen and its an Awesome Bluebook as it always is and I'm proud to be a member of BBCHA and hunt Blueticks. I have something to read for a couple days now and always look forward to every ones stories, ads, poems and pictures. Thanks to everyone involved in this great book and the effort you all put into it. Great job MR. Ed Mauney, Wesley Martin, Jim Ballard and Lynn and every one else. Hope yaw enjoy the poem I wrote titled " Becoming Paw Paw " . I woke up in the middle of the night when this poem came from my heart into my head and I had to get up and write it down. I cried the whole time and couldn't write as fast as it was pouring out of me. I loved my Paw Paw and I love my Grandkids and when this moment hit me that inspired this poem it truly was a life changing and understanding moment in my life that made me decide to quit drinking and get closer to GOD, Family and Knowing what was in my on heart and what is truly special in life and the things that aren't. Mason was 6 months old when this happened and I feel that bond, that Paw Paw moment that opened my eyes and my heart saved my life. 4 years ago this July the 4th I sat the bottle down and never looked back. Best decision of my life and I thank God everyday for sending Mason into my life and opening my eyes and starting the dead piece of my heart beating again that had died when I lost my Paw Paw so many years ago. God bless the Grandchildren.
