-Richard-

Im trying to get a couple of my cousins to make the trip with me so I can get a few dogs in the woods down there. If I get my cousins to go I think I will hunt Walter my moose pup hes young but doesnt make many mistakes and I think its worth it but I may change my mind. Now if my cousin doesnt go I think Im gonna hunt Addy. I will have Bull,Addy and either Walter or Hazel. Like I said Im planning on just pleasure hunting the week prior to the hunt.

Here Ya Go Richard

Here a couple of pics I took last month of Sissy (Jim/Wendy) and Stella. Not the best pics that I have ever taken but it is what it is.

Sissy...sorry I cut her nose off.

Stella. This coon was up in a dead snag.

Ole Haze still getting it done.

P Mike, thanks for getting her going. I can't wait to get her in the woods and see just what kind of a tree hugger she is. She will have some little 3/4 brothers/sisters and Haze will have some great grandpups in a couple of months. Great grandpups, how do you like the sound of that? My how time flies when you are having fun.

Hunt

Buck and I dropped Stella and Mud on National Forest tonight, didn't put in till around 9pm. Stella struck up the creek at about 300 yards and started cold trailing. She worked and worked. Once she straightened it out, it went to the top of the big ridge which was about 800 yards and thats being conservative. When her and mud crossed over we lost signal so I headed to the top and Buck headed back to the truck to drive around. When I got about 50 yards from the top, I could hear stella treeing and mud too at times. I went on to the top and they were 850 more yards all the way straight down and was about 130 yards from the road. They had the coon......big boar....real big for us around here. Stella did a really nice job on a bad track and came up with the meat at the end.

I took Boone and Hutch to the big timber last night to try to find a coon. I haven't been there in a long time. By the end of the night, I remembered why. I am getting too old for it. I thought that I was up in Va mountains. They made 2 den trees. I climbed up and down for what seemed like hours. I even found a laurel thicket if that tells you anything. I turned loose at 7 and got back to my Jeep at 10:30, soaking wet from sweating. But they sure did sound pretty in those hollers, until they went over the top and out of hearing. Then when I reached the top and heard that roaring it was almost worth it. By the time I reached the second tree, fat Hutch was so wore out he just sat there treeing.

Hills are good for both hound and man!

Twice last week though I had Mac drop over and off in a holler so deep I couldn't hear a peep until I moved higher and he was blowing it out. I love it. 👍

These weren't hills that I was in. When they go over and out of hearing and then come back in hearing as they go across the top of the second one and then go out of hearing and come back in hearing as they cross the third one and then the fourth, they aren't "hills".

I have no doubt.

I drew out years ago at a spot further east of me and the fella keep saying how hilly his place was and hard to walk. By the end of the night he asked what I thought. I said man I ain't seen as much as a speed bump yet.

Most ain't got a clue. I just love the mountains. I recognize the downside though for sure, and many nights wish it was different, but it's home.

Cross Trail Coon Hunt

Pastor Mike and I met with a local chapter of Cross Trail Outfitters last night for a talk about hounds and hunting. After a short talk and devotion we took 4 boys and two Dads out for a coon hunt. It was the coldest night we have had in a long time. When we turned out it was about 28 degrees but the wind died and it was not too bad. Mike and I took four houds. Frog, Stella, Copper and Hammer. We made a tree fairly quick, but it was a tall white pine and we did not find ricky. Forgot to mention we went to public land with a lake. Much of the land is steep and full of laurels the closer you get to the water. The second track went to the water but the dogs kept working and working. After a while the were treed solid. Mike and I were doubtful as most of the tracks at the water don't end well. We went to the dogs and told the boys we would holler if we needed them to come down. It was only about 120 yards to the tree. The dogs did their job and we called the others down. It was hilarious hering them crashing throgh the laurels and getting to the tree. We were able to get some pretty good pictures with the boys and dogs in the picture. When we knocked it out it fell right into the lake but we were able to fish it out. Those boys were all smiles. One dad talked to me today and he said Mom had to make them go to bed last night. It was a thrill for Mike and I to share about the dogs and being a houndsman. It was also fun giving those boys a night they will remember for a lifetime.

The one with the biggest smile is Mike not one of the kids!

Great story, Jason, it was real nice of you to take P. Mike and those other kids out hunting. I bet P Mike's wife had to make him go to bed also. How about a picture of Copper. I have bought a dog and I have no idea what she looks or sounds like.

I had a great time in Orangeburg this weekend. The hunting wasn't bad at all. I was lucky enough to get a good guide both nights. We only scored on 1 coon on Fri and 0 on Sat but we didn't drive very far and we didn't get wet. Jason, texted me a picture of Copper all stretched out on a tree Sat night and I think that she looks purdy. Y'all are going to change your tune if you draw him at Southern Days. There won't be any more jokes after then.

It was cold. I wimped out on Monday night and should have gone. I made three drops last night and had a den and one on the outside. Nice here today. Going to hit it again tonight. I may try to hunt with Shannon and his pup again tonight.
