Took Briar tonight to BO's Bottom and cut him near the Beaver Lake. There was some bad weather about 30 miles west of me but I felt like it would stay west. He didn't strike where the feeder was and I figured it was empty so I walked in and took a look and it was. He went on into the swamp and struck at 186yds and opened here and there but moved it on out good. I idled along on the trail trying to keep him within 100yds so when he hit the tree I could get on in there. After trailing him about 400yds he came across the trail out in front of me then hit a tree less than 100' off the trail with three long bawls. I eased off the 4 wheeler while he checked it and threw my dim red light out into the top of a big water oak and there he set looking at me with both eyes in a big fork. Only trouble was Briar didn't get back on it. I waited a couple minutes and went into the tree and he came in to me, reared up on the tree and let out a couple of huge, bawl locates but got back down. All the petting and loving in the world and I couldn't make him get right on that tree. I know it wasn't a hot track and the scent probably wasn't strong enough for him but man it gets frustrating knowing he has what it takes and he trailed him good and located the right tree. I left the coon to run again, until the treeing gets better, like he did the other morning, they ALL will get to run again. It started to spit some big drops of rain so I hauled it back home, try again tomorrow.
MR. Jack that was some nasty swamp water you took the spill in that night. Glad you put the first mud and scratches on that rifle, makes it easier for me to beat briars with it now.
Rowdy, winched that tree with a Tulsa Winch I run off the PTO of my tractor. I used to think I could spit on my hands and put my back into it and move most anything, now I know better!
Chris, I need your snake dog over here, I could just send him ahead of me on the way to the tree and he would root out all the snakes and kill'em. Good to have a dog like that around the house, he might have saved someone's life by killing that snake, you just never know.
Steve, it sounds like to me Briar has what it takes, as he is still pretty young. I know what you mean on the frustrations of a young dog, I've been there myself. Keep him in the woods as your doing and I'm sure it will come full circle to him.
Jeff brought Dot up this weekend has left her to breed to Traveler, I bred her yesterday. I'll be looking forward to one of those pups for sure. Good luck and good hunting!
