James - the head is operating as it is designed to do. If it is a nuisance to you - we can remove the heat control system, however that will subject the LEDs and electronics to premature failure. Everyone I come in contact with, I advise them to walk with the light no higher than click 3 and use click 4 only to verify objects at a distance or shining trees - you can run the red LEDs wide open and the head will not overheat - overheat will occur with only the white. While shining a tree and changing spots for a better vantage point, turn the light to a lower setting and once you want to look up the tree again turn it up. Interfacing with the head is very important, if you think the head maybe heating up, feel of the head. and If the head so hot you can hardly touch it - it is ready to default to click 1 until it cools off. A note about the heat control system in our heads, this system uses technology found on aircraft wing overheat detection systems, a bi-metallic sensor. Some variants of our head, other light builders have produced, use progressive or dynamic heat control, what this means is that to keep the head from getting hot they modulate (cut back) on the amount of light the head produces.
