I remember when I first Got Breanna from Danny Biggert. Him and Doug and Mark all told me she had potential but only had limited hunting when i got her. I wasn't expecting much but the first night I took her it was raining pretty heavy and she made three trees and I saw three coons. I hunted her for a month and then went to American days with her. I remember sitting around a campfire there with some guys and the old guy said I hear you got that Breanna female from Danny...
I said ya....he chuckled and said "junk"....then a younger fella who was sitting there said ya, I hunted her for awhile...she ain't much. Her sister is 10x the dog she will ever be...where as someone else threw in the word cull. I didn't say much....but won my cast that night...and the next night, and she didn't look too bad the third night. In less than a year from then she would go on to win many casts and make Grand Nite Champion and make pkc champion and win around $2500. She also won hi op sex at southern days and national days and AKC Ladies overall world championship. Last year I hunted a pup off of her that made Grand Nite Champion in 8 weekends and also went on to win hi op sex at National Redbone days and she is one of my favorite dogs of all time.
I guess one man's "junk" is another mans treasure. Sure glad I listened to the guys who knew how to see raw potential in a dog...even before most had come to the surface.
I think some guys these days think if "they" cant get a dog started...then its a cull.....I also think that some guys can only start dogs that most would call complete naturals.
I like a natural....but many of the best I ever hunted with or against took a lot of
Work on the part of the trainer to put the dog in the right situation so that the traits it was born with could come to the surface. Some take a lot of correction also. Its always nice to hear about all these naturals who were never trashy and hardly ever needed any correction....but I have never seen many who progressed like that.
One thing I can tell folks is that how old a dog is when it starts or natural or trashy it is while it is being trained has no bearing on how good that dog will end up being in the end. Some things will make it much easier to train a dog....but that doesn't mean the dog will be better in the end. If I see a dog do things I like...I know I can get them to repeat it again if i put them in the right situation. A trainer has to know what to look for in a young dog before he makes the decision to cull it. Some faults will never change...and some can be corrected. If the traits you want are in a dog then a good dog man can probably get them out eventually. I have not seen this dog that Tony is talking about...but I would never cull her without putting her through some paces to see if she has potential. Over the years I have picked up many culls from people who could not teach a dog how to sleep, let alone tree a coon.....and most went on to make pretty good dogs and a few were even big winners.
Tony, put some time into her and see what you got. I know the breeding is solid behind her so the traits should be there. You may have happened onto a diamond in the rough

Hahaha that's right Shane, I've got high hopes for her! I took her in the pouring rain the other night & she treed a coon in 6 inches of water. I think she's going to be nice 1. I know it takes more then talk to make 1, Ben told me the story, John called him & asked about her & wanted her to see what he could do with her, Ben said that she would tree a turn out coon but hasn't been messed with. She wasn't what he thought shed be & he sent her back. I'm sure glad we had the opportunity to get her!

It's good to see this old blood showing up again in all 3 pedigrees of the Redbones in the UKC World Champion Finals. This dog put the heart and drive in his offspring and big hunt winning potential just like his daddy, grand daddy, and great grand daddy before him.

All 4 of these dogs made it to the World Hunt Finals by beating the best the other breeds had to offer. Bill Wallock and I both said that there is a World Champion in this bloodline and someday it will happen. I hope it happens this year.

In 1989 GrNtCh Timber Jack won 1st place at an RQE in Minnesota against 120 dogs with 850+. Bill Wallock called me the next morning and I didn't even know he was hunting in the hunt. Later that day people who hunted with him called me to congratulate us on the win and tell us about what an amazing job he did and wanted pups. They had never hunted with a Redbone that hunted that hard and could tree coon that fast on his own.

A few weeks later we went to the Zone Semi Finals and drew a good young Walker dog the first night. TJ treed two coon by himself for 450+ and a cast win. The next night was the ultimate test for any dog. He drew two former 2x World Champions in the same cast, Bellars Pac man and Bama. My jaw dropped and thoughts of the finals started to fade. Bill Wallock comes up to me and says , I pity any fool who takes what is mine , in the voice of Mr T. Lol

TJ was the most tuned he had ever been and Bill hunted him for 3 weeks straight without a break. He looked like a machine and was operating like one. There was some heat on the trees that night but all 3 dogs treed on all 3 trees together. After the first two trees, TJ was leading the cast with 450+ with 1st and 1st on both trees. The last tree he took 50 strike and 125 on tree. They walked into the tree and it was small, about 6 inches in diameter and TJ was on one side and Bama on the other with Pac Man sitting back off the tree. TJs mouth was bleeding but he didn't miss a lick on the tree. They were all surprised to look up and find a small coon in that one and TJ won the cast with 625+. Neither of the owners or handlers of the Walker dogs could believe that a Redbone could get the trees on their dogs. Both came up to me after the hunt to congratulate us on the win and tell us what a good dog we had. I felt like we just won a World Hunt. Haha. When word got out at the clubhouse we were swarmed by people and congratulations on taking down the Big Dogs.

We went to finals in Missouri that year and a few at UKC including John Miller had Timber Jack picked to win it all. He came up and wished me the best and said he was confident we would be there in the end. We drew Ed Meads Curly dog the first night and it was super windy. On the first turnout all the dogs got split up and were tracking out of hearing. The cast called time out and unfortunate for us, it took us over an hour to find TJ. He was right off a road treed with a coon when we found him. We were devastated to say the least. Maybe with GPS technology we could have found him sooner and not have been scratched. It was a long ride back home but a year to remember for sure.

He won every hunt we put him in that year including high scoring dog at 2 Redbone Sectionals, WI State Championship, Red, White and Blue Hunt, Plymouth Benefit Hunt/ ACHA World Qualifying Hunt, and the RQE. He finished with Purina Outstanding Coonhound of Breed and 6th place overall. He deserved a lot more we felt but not bad for a college kid working on a doctorate degree and an electrician married with two kids at the time. We knew from then on that we had the dog power to finally compete and win against the best that was out there. We also knew this bloodline would be seen for many years and at some point would win a World Hunt. That time has come.

My old buddy Pete Craft followed that fine hound for years .Loved going hunting with Pete and Jack. Pete was a lot of fun to hunt with.Jack was out of Timber Jack x Outlaw Jessie. Still carry that blood here.

Hey Doc, didn't you draw Hardwood Dan at the state hunt that year? Dan was leading the Purina race? It was in around that time 89 - 90? That was the first time I saw your Timber Jack dog, I remember you coming back in after the hunt and was mobbed by people congratulating you on the win. I think it was a Friday night, I took 3rd registered that night and went to Avon for a RQE Saturday night and never heard the results from Saturday night up there. We spoke briefly that night about your hunt, but, you were being heavily congratulated by all that was there. We never that I know of hunted together, but by all accounts TJ was a legend up here,

Pete was a good guy and I enjoyed all the talks we had about dogs. He was a Timber Jack fan for sure and his Outlaw Jack dog will be heard of for years as well. I had a littermate to his Outlaw Jack dog that I called Timber Shock. One of my favorite dogs of all time. What an amazing cross that was. There should have been 4 Gr.Nt.Ch. from that litter instead of just 2.

I remember that night. We were on a roll that year. Between him and Brandy II , they beat some of the biggest names in the Walker breed. The one thing they both had in common was Gr.Nt.Ch. Toussaint Red Talker, one of the best red dogs Danny Biggert ever hunted, and Gr.Nt.Ch. Lumpkins Timber Chopper Jr. , who Mr. Ether Smith quoted as being the best Red dog that ever lived.

Man I sure do miss Pete.Every August he would call me and tell me when the coons were in the corn.I would pack up and head that way and he would put me up in his garage and we would hunt all week.Or at least I would he had a night or two he reserved to play poker.Great times I miss very much.

Me too Pete was fun. Maybe next year you can come back up here and hunt. I should be on a work schedule that allows it, we'll see.

Just made a cross back on Too the Max with a female out of G-Man and Cherry Bomb. Really looking forward to seeing how they turn out. We ended up with only three females and lost two males and a female after a c-section was needed. Not bad for 25 year old semen. This will be the first time Timber Jack and Brunswick Little Man show up in a three gen pedigree in over 10 years since the Pepper Ann cross.

Max was one of my all time favorites. He was a natural from 3 months of age and the most natural pup
I ever raised. He had one of the biggest mouths ever put on a pup. He was s natural split tree dog that made a name for himself by the time he was 2. Just like his granddaddy Little Man who was one of the youngest Dual Grands at the time.

The mother is Cherry Chapstick who we purchased from Shane Maxey. She only lacks two wins to be Grand Nt Ch. and should be finished soon after the pups are weaned. She�s got a really good mouth and is a super hard tree dog.

The pedigree will have Too the Max in it twice. G-Man�s grandma , Moonlight Amber, was also off of Too the Max.
