Fall mornings...

I got up this morning and as the sun started to rise, I could see one of the most beautiful sights a person can be blessed to see. Pictures don't do it justice but I couldn't help buy try and capture at least a moment of it...

As the fall fast approaches, there are changes that occur and one of those is how fog lays in the coulees as the morning temperatures get cooler and cooler. There is a change coming and this morning, I could see the signs...

I love how the hill tops lay exposed as the fog shifts across the bottoms of the coulees...

It seems that within minutes of the sun cracking the horizon...the fog starts to lift towards the sky...

I love this time of year...there is nothing like it and we are blessed to be able to enjoy it...I so much appreciate the time I've had to be a part of it over the years

Sunny disposition...

Pelz...if you had the same sunny disposition as I have, you can make your own light in the morning...

Whether coming or going...there has to be a minute or two devoted to enjoying what the Lord has provided us...eh?

Counting down...

We're counting down the days until Pastor Mike, Buck, and Jason roll in for some northern hospitality. Nothing like hunting the hills of Wisconsin when the frost is on the ground and the air is cool and clear. Scott will pop in for a night or two so we'll have a good crew for sure.

I've got the batteries charged for the cameras and I know that all you guys have been practicing your shooting skills...except Scott...I know his scope didn't even get here yet ...but when it does...look out...it's high tech this year...

I look forward every year to having these guys come to visit, it's always a highlight of the fall for Dave and me. This year Jason is tagging along for the first time so we're happy to have another set of long legs to get these dogs rounded up.

Moose is in pretty good shape but Yank and Leinie will have to get there while on the job...that's good though because maybe they'll have a little more left at the end.

We're looking forward to it guys...

pups

Tom both of my pups will run a drag and treed it. I am going to trap a coon tonight and try them on a live coon. I haven't done that yet. Link trees on the tree and Hussler sits at the base. I was going to sell one of them but I don't know if I will or not. I like them both. Link does everything quick. I sure like the pictures of Gun. He acts like the big dogs are not even in the picture. The pups have all been bold from the start. Dave

Your right Tom. It's going be fun for sure. Even a noobie ( Jason) in tow.
The scope is supposed to be here Fri. Hoping to get it in time to sight it in on Fri.. But if it's here to late on Fri, it'll be on the gun and sighted in on Sat.
I'm hoping it's all it's cracked up to be. Nay sayer Raven thinks it's to good to be true. But it's gotta be better than his shooting. Oh yeah. I typed that.

I'll be putting some fur in EZ's mouth Fri. night. I'll try and get her on vid. She's got a nice mouth on her. Same pitch as Leinie.

Scott

Pressure...

These guys are rough Scott but it usually calms down after they all take their turns missing a few times. The pressure is on when the easy shots are there and we're all watching...kind of giggling in the background...If you miss an easy one...you just gotta grin and bear it...

If I can make it to the trees, I'll dazzle you all with my camera work and leave the shooting to the rest of you. I've got a new lense so hopefully I can get up close and personal on the coons once the leaves are off...I'm looking for a close up of that "quizzical", "surprised" look...when something goes whizzin' by their heads...or not...that would be too much...those pictures would be priceless...eh?

Anyway, it should be a good time Scott, I don't think anyone will be too hard on anyone else considering our collective record...it should be fun. I'm hoping we tree a bunch closer to the bottom of the hill than the top...if I'm on the bottom and closer to the top than the bottom...if I'm on the top...we all know it will work out that way...right?

Season...

Our hide season starts tonight at 12:01 AM. I'll be cleaning up the guns this afternoon and I just mounted a scope on Dave's new .22 so maybe we'll even get it sighted in yet today.

The long range forecast for next weekend, Oct 23-24 calls for daytime temperatures in the low to mid 50s and overnight lows in the low to mid 30s....perfect! We might see some cooler temps going into that week but that's OK, it's nearly November and it slides fast in this part of the country when we hit November.

Buck, you should start talking nice to Pastor Mike and Jason, you need to be sure that they're in good spirits and good enough shape to pick the dogs off these hillsides...if you're not able to make it to where they are... I know Dave has my back, he's been doing a great job of following Moose and you gotta be in shape to do that

I'll tell you how hard core Dave is...he took Moose "and" Leinie the other night. He turned them loose and, according to the Garmin, they went over 1 mile without making a bark so he drove around to where they were. He said Leinie popped out of the woods so he caught her and put her in the box...Moose was already over the ridge so he drove to the top and when he stopped on top, Moose was down the side pounding hard, treed with da meat...They never made a bark but meant to find a coon and Moose did just that. He's not running or straight lining, he's just going through the countryside looking for a ringtail...It's looking more and more like he means to get pulled off a tree.

I told Richard awhile back that I meant to teach him to come when I called but he said..."oh no, don't do that, he's the kind everyone is looking for"...we'll see how that goes...eh? All I can say is...don't unsnap the lead if you don't want to go hunting.

Yank and Leinie will be in better shape by next weekend so we should have a, darned near, full arsenal of hounds ready to raise heck with the coon population...it's gonna be fun...

It sounds like Moose is a lot like his Mother. Jason, you had better be careful what you ask for. Sometimes a "get em off the tree" hound is not that much fun to hunt in the mountains. Don't think that I don't know what you are up to. It looks like I will have a new hound to run in the hunts in 2011, T-Top Soggy Bottom Diamond Ridge Tom Tom. He split about 30 yds from 2 well known hounds and had the coon.

Call

Tom I down know how you could go wrong by teaching him to come when you called. If you don't want him to come don't call. You could have the best of both. Hope you guys have a great week. I have some old trail bologna left from last year. If you want a couple I will send them with the guys when they help us complete our deal. I haven't had time to go kill a deer yet this year. Dave

My goodness Scott........I don't think you need a sniper's scope to hit a coon do you?

I'm not even going to say that I can hit one of those wisconsin coon.....I've done my share of missing up there.

Can't wait to make the trip. It's going to be a great time. The Frog Dog is anxious to get up there to go face to face with a big wisconsin coon.

Moose...

When we're in the yard or pen, you can call him from anywhere and he'll come right to you. It's when it's dark and he's got his nose in the wind that he all of a sudden gets deaf. There was a day when that's what I was looking for in competition but I guess my perspective has changed a bit since those days. With the Garmin, it's not so bad like it was back in the days when you had to climb the highest ridge to hear where the dog was...

The gear is ready, the guns are clean and the dogs are chomping at the bit...I'll be after them tomorrow night...we'll see if Dave shows up tonight for a midnight excursion.

We always leave a few alive close around the house so we have something to chase when Mike, Buck and Jason are here. I've got that whole week off so it should be a good time.

Richard...sounds like Tom Tom is getting used to the Wisconsin landscape...eh?

Good night...

Hey Carl, it sure sounds like you had a good night. Dave came out late and he had a couple out there for me to skin this morning and I think he said he left a couple. I'm going to give it a try tonight so we'll see how it goes. I'm going to take Yank or Leinie because they're a little easier to manage than Moose.

It's always exciting to start the season like that and hopefully, as the dogs get in better and better shape, there will be lots of good nights like that.

I'll have some pictures tomorrow if things go good tonight...we'll see.

Congratulations to Richard and Tom Tom

I wanted to send out a big Congratulations to Richard Lambert and his nice young male out of

Gr. Nite Ch. PR T-Top Soggy Bottom Haze
and
Gr. Nite Ch. PR Long Tall Sally

Tom Tom got a first place win last night at a hunt here in Wisconsin...it appears that it was a pretty worthwhile trip north.

Tom Tom is 10-11 months old so it's a pretty nice accomplishment to have a first place win under his belt.

Last weekend, Cuz picked up two first place wins at 11 months of age so I'm really excited to see how this generation out of Rabble Rouser is able to reproduce.

Rabble Rouser and Sally made for a real nice cross and now Haze and Sally is looking to have been a good cross...it's a good mix of blood for sure...

Start with good stock and then show them what a coon is...that's a pretty good formula for success...eh?

Opening night

I was waiting on a friend to come hunting tonight but he couldn't make it so after Dave took off with Moose and Leinie, I loaded up Yank and headed out to hunt around home.

For those of you who wondered what happened to Yank, he's alive and well and going back to work...

Here's tree # 1 for the night...

Tree # 2...

Tree # 3...

Tree # 4...

That last tree was just a small box elder but he treed it after a good cornfield chase and this was up as far as it could go...

Yank treed 6 coons in 4 trees tonight and I took 4 home with us.

Yank is a real nice hound and easy to get along with. It also looks like he's going to be a real good reproducer based off the couple of litters that he has sired to this point. It's very gratifying to see these young hounds, out of old Rabble Rouser, carry on the tradition of being good hounds and producing pups that start early and get things figured out quick.

We'll see what kind of luck Dave had in the morning.

Looking good Tom. Yank is a nice hound for sure, and he does throw some nice pups. My luck hasn't been as good as yours. Katie made 3 trees, two I'm pretty sure she backtracked to both the trees. She had a good chase in the corn and had the meat in a huge pine (still not sure how I found the big boar). She is looking pretty good for being so green and just starting hunting by herself. But I'm on the board for the 2010 season, so hopefully it only gets better. Hope to make it down your way before gun season.

EverReady Kennels, they just keep coming and coming and coming. I can't wait to breed Tom Tom Turkey to a female and get some pups. I saw a set of papers on a female while I was in Wisconsin. It was loaded with Bato, Zack and Rambling Red Ace. She would cross excellant with Tom. I think her name is Reba.
