God's Blessings...
I have mentioned before that I love to listen to ol' tyme coon hunting stories.
I would rather sit around a campfire at any time day or night with a bunch of ol' tymers and of course a good ol' hound by my side. As for my grandfather, hunting and fishing was what he lived for. After working all day in the coal mines, he would spend half the night coon hunting with his favorite English Bluetick female named Jill. Chasing down coons on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River.
Papaw had one of the best little blue English females in the county. Everyone wanted to hunt with her. Several people often asked if they could go along, often times Papaw would tell them no because to him there was nothing like sitting in the dark and listening to a good ol' hound chase a helpless coon over the hills and through the hollers. For him it was his time to relax and forget about the hard day of work that he had. Many of nights he just lay back against an old tree sippin' on some White Lightin' just waiting to hear that true hound sound from ol' Jill. When she struck he new she would put a coon at the end.
One night as he was getting ready to go a hunting he asked me, "Son why don’t you come along with me tonight?” And for some reason my parents said, “Okay... He can go with you as long as you bring him back before midnight and leave that jug here at the house.”
To my surprise, Papaw responded well that would be fine he didn't need that d*** jug anyways. Jill was as fast as lightening, she could probably tree a coon quicker than any hound that I have ever seen. I remember leading her down to the river bottom that night of the South Branch of the Potomac River. And Before I could get her unsnaped she had already struck. So into the river and the darkness she went. Papaw said just rest back against a tree her son. As we sit down ol' Jill was in hot pursuit. Papaw reached in pocket and pulled out his pocket watch and said give her about 10-15 minutes and she'll have that one treed. Well needless to say he hadn't hardly had his watch back in his pocket and he said listen there son ol' Jill is locating a tree already. She had the best triple locate I believe I have ever heard. If she never completed her triple locate you could bet the farm the coon was moving on. And then all of the sudden she locked down soild as the tree she was standing on barking every breath well over a hundred barks a minute. I went to get up and Papaw said just sit right hear and enjoy the music she isn't going anywhere. So I did just that it seemed as if we sit there for at least an hour. If you can pardon me for saying so, it's one hell of a way to spend the night in the country.
That particular night Jill made me want my own coon hound and made me have the urge to go nearly every night. That night was so good that it seems to come to mind every time I hunt any River bottom.
As I sit there filled with excitement , I looked at him and said. "What possessed you into bringing me coon hunting tonight anyways? He said well son, I wanted to introduce you to a gift from God and I brought Jill along tonight to help me do it.
I must say that night was one of the most thrilling nights I have every had and it was my privilege to witness such a gift and always will be.
So as I sit here tonight typing this story while my Papaw is lying in bed at a nursing home at the age of 93 soon to be 94 I thank God, him and my parents for giving me that night in the woods.
So let me say this. We must live every day as they would be no tomorrow and be thankful for all we have been given and give thanks to the Lord above us because he has made all things possible.
Just as I dread tomorrow to come at the same time I want it to be over. I know that what we find out from the Dr. is in Gods hands and I know he will me make it as good as possible no matter the out come I will continue to love my wife very much and I believe in my heart God put us together. I will be there for her no mattter what. May the grace of God be with us forever, Amen
P.S. The status of tomorrow's results could play a BIG role in the future of my coon hunting. I deer hunted some last week while she was working. I cheerish every second I can spend with her. And most of those seconds are at night. So while my dogs are getting fat and the coons are getting rest I am doing what I know best. Devoting myself to my beautiful wife.
Where will we be tomorrow??? Only God knows and he won't tell us but that's okay.. From our heart to yours Good night to all, The Cartwright's
P.S.S This story always brings tears to my eyes, happiness in my heart and a smile on my face.. Thanks for reading enjoy...
