Update

I just heard from Buck...they're on the road about an hour from Chilicothe so I think they'll be making a stop around there to visit with my good friend Dave Woofter and then Rob and Katina somewhere else along the way.

Buck says that they have the equipment for pictures and video so we should hopefully be able to provide some interesting updates over the next week or so. It's misting rain right now so we're hoping it continues long enough to soak everything down good and improve the tracking over what it has been and especially with this full moon.

Richard, you can come to visit anytime, we've got room to put you up and we should still be able to find a coon somewhere around here, even after these guys head back home. We always like to hunt the big ridges later in the season because that's when we get the "big" ones. Long, tough tracks and rough, steep terrain but good coon country if you can stand it. No matter how cold you get standing there waiting...you warm up fast once you start scaling the sides of these bluffs.

I see there is a pile of coons in the back of the Ranger this morning...I don't know how many...3 or 4 for sure. Dave took his boys and another bunch of kids out last night and it looks like they had some luck. He asked if I wanted to tag along but I had to decline until tonight...I've only got so many trips to the woods in these knees and I have to save up for later in the week...eh?

More to come...stay tuned...

Friday night...

Dave went hunting last night with his two boys and a group of other kids. He has a pretty good night.

These are nice coons...28 - 25 and 20 pounds...

This is Cruz showing off a unique all black coon they bagged last night...

Cruz and Chase are Dave's boys and they both like to go along with Dad to the woods. Last night Dave said that Chase knocked one out with one shot with the pistol...I think we're going to have to get him to give us old farts a lesson or two...eh?

They got 3 coons on 4 tracks and trees. One of the tracks was hot and straight to a den so the coon wins that one...

Like Dave says...it's like driving a cadillac when hunting these dogs. Whether it's Moose and Yank, Moose and Leinie or Yank and Leinie, there's never a trash chase, they hunt hard, strike honest and when they tree, you can expect to bag a coon...good stuff...

Where are those Southern boys? Did they get lost on the way? Good stuff?? It sounds boring to me. Tell Dave to stick a pup in there to create a little excitement. I have a couple that I could send up there to wipe the smile off his face.

southern boys

The Virginia Cartel isn't lost yet.......we are in Rockford, Illinois where we stayed last night. We are one member short however. Jason was with us until he received word that his father-in-law had passed away. We were in chillicothe when he got the word so he was able to get a car from a relative who lives close by and he went on to tennessee and we kept going. We will probably pull in to tom's sometime in mid-afternoon. Look out Wisconsin, we are here!!!!!!!

Coming soon...

Hey Richard...we've got a couple of pups that will be hitting the woods yet this fall. I'm pretty sure that the Moose and Leinie pups will be tracking and treeing before spring and I wouldn't doubt one bit that Gun will be tagging along, tracking and treeing also in another month or so. The kind of winter we get will dictate how far they'll go this fall and winter but I wouldn't be afraid to put these pups in the woods right now and I'd expect them to be on the track and at the tree barking treed almost like they know what they're doing.

We don't often have a lot of miserable nights when we start pups because we already know what they'll do. We prepare them right, before they ever go to the woods...I would never take a pup to the woods that I didn't think was ready to track and tree but when they're ready...they go whether it's at 5 months or a year of age.

Mike and Buck will hopefully be rested up so we can jump into it tonight and get a good night of hunting in. It rained pretty much all night and that, added to what we got yesterday, is going to make for some good conditions for hunting. There is a strong cold front headed our way that should get here by mid week but it shouldn't cause any issues with our hunting time as long as the wind doesn't blow 40 MPH.

More to come...

You know you could have spent the night here. You're just a hop skip and a jump away. Bonus is, the wife is gone.
MMMM Cracker Barrel. I love their chicken fried steak.
See you guys in a few days.

First night...

Mike and Buck made it here in good shape, arriving mid afternoon on Sunday. We had a good visit and then planned to go to the woods later on in the evening. Dave was feeling under the weather so it was me, Mike and Buck that loaded up and went out.

Please enjoy these pictures as much as we enjoyed being there in person and watching some outstanding young hounds do their business...

Moose, Zoe and Frog

Moose and Frog...

Frog on the wood...

And a couple more of the big dog...Moose...

It was actually a rough night with misting rain on and off...mostly on...The first drop, the dogs hunted out good and struck medium deep. They ran the track hard up through a wooded ravine and located and treed hard. We made our way up and they had the meat...

The second drop ended up in a hot race around and around a corn field down a creek bottom...the coon got under a bull doze pile...

The third drop was a lay up with Moose falling onto a den tree. We walked them out further on the ridge and let them go along a long corn field. Moose and Frog covered a lot of ground on this drop but eventually struck down a long, wooded ravine. The grubbed the track until they heated it up and eventually treed it...with the meat...

We hope that you can get a feel for this young hound through these pictures that we post...he's the real deal and as nice as you'll ever find in just about every way.

We're looking forward to a few more nights in the woods but the weather man is predicting 30 - 50 MPH winds over the next couple of days so we'll play it as it comes.

Stay tuned...

Moose appears to be in mighty fine shape. Y'all have fun and remember Buck, take no prisoners. Remember Sherman's march to the sea.

Man moose looks tight. His and Leinie's pups should be muscle bound freak zoids.

I used the new scope tonight. I likey. Had just a body shot initially. Gave him one in the shoulder. He moved and gave me the shot to the noodle.

Oh my goodness, look at that scope! Just how tall are those trees over there in Western Wisconsin? When I was over there Deadeye Dave was knocking em out with one shot and only had open sights. Noah, I have heard Frog and that is exactly what he sounds like.

Monday night

We had a pretty good night again last night. It wasn't the best night to be out hunting by a long shot but we were able to make 3 trees with 3 coon.

We had Moose, Yank, Zoe and Frog and all the dogs did a pretty good job.

Lots of action shots...please enjoy, it's as close to being there as we can get you all..

Yank

Moose and Frog Dog

These are all mixed up of Moose, Zoe and Frog

It was a nasty night and we all got a little wet, although Mike and Dave got the worst of it...and Mike worse than Dave...

With the wind blowing and the rain falling, we were satisfied with how everything went and Moose especially did a real good job but all did their part.

More to come...

More of Monday...

We had a few more action shots from Monday that were too good to not share...

This coon made it up this tree but he was being pushed hard and was up only about 10 feet...it was a good one for Frog and Zoe because they could see him and were pounding the wood hard.

The wind is blowing to 40 MPH gusts and rain is still falling so tonight might be a stay in and take it easy night...we'll see how the rest of the day develops...

Those big slow Wisconsin coons are so fat they can't climb any higher than 10 feet. Did y'all need that scope to knock that coon out? Those pictures look like they are excellant examples of good natured dogs "jockeying for position". Moose, Willow, Sally and Haze; the Va Cartel will really be able to put on some fine shows this winter. I can't wait to come up and see one of these extravaganzas. Buck will have to sell tickets. I wonder how long it would take Moose, Sally and Tom to cover 30,000 acres? I would not want to be the one to unsnap their leads!

Richard I think Buck and Moose just need to turn loose me and Willow would stay at the truck it would be a big character building relationship between Buck and Moose

And when ever he and Moose came out and got some cell service me and Willow could drive around and pick them up

The last holdout from the Va. Cartel is sitting patiently in the Chicago airport for departure to Wisconsin. Richard, I sure hope they left some of those easy ones for me. I might even suggest we go over to the rough ridges to find one of those thurdy pounders!!!

Looking forward to a great visit.
