Money

Money takes the fun out of it in my opinion. Back in the 70s everywhere you went someone was already there hunting.now nobody hardly hunts around me and there's not as much ground to hunt as the people from the city buy it up and the trophy deer hunting is taking over.everyone wants to have a 200 inch deer hanging on there wall.

I agree everyone had what they like and that is great it makes us look at diffrwnt things and just becouse we may or maynot hunt the same style of hound doesn't make mine better or worse. Alot of times mine have been on the worse end and that is OK . I would like to have a really good road hinter now don't care if it is white faced old lol just something to kill time with and not have to worry about all the hype

Top Coon Dog

I am very pleased with all those who have posted replies to this thread. I agree that we all have a different idea on what a Top Coon Dog is and that's okay. If you have owned or hunted with what you consider a Top dog that's all that matters to me. I just enjoy reading about others experiences with their dogs. Dave

Outstanding Hounds-Roy Jacksons Josie

One of the best dogs that I hunted with was owned by Roy Jackson of Ft Scott, Ks., Gr.Nt. Ch Jackson's Josie
Coonhunters tend to talk about sorry coonhounds and coonhounds that the only way that they can beat them are with their words and not in the woods in a one on one situation.
I lived in Wisconsin and was traveling back to Kansas to visit my Family and had made arrangements to hunt with Roy Jackson and David Hathaway at Ft. Scott, Ks. I was hunting a better than average female out of Kaw River Chief and Kenneth Tinsleys Queen. My only criticism of her was that she was too slow on the coldest track that she would trail, but she would also track and tree coon that most dogs couldnt open on.
On every drop it was Strike, Drive, and Tree with my female only barking on tree. Roys Josie and Daves Jane ran those tracks to catch with such speed that normally noisy Queen ran silent. We hunted all night and each turnout was the same. Josie was a machine! It was never a question of if they would tree it, but only where. I was so impressed that I stayed and hunted another night and it was a repeat of the simple process of strike , track, tree! Leaves were off and we seen ever coon. I HAVE NEVER BEEN BEAT SO BADLY, YET THOROUGHLY ENJOYED IT. Josie was the proof that I had been looking for existed! Roys dogs were heavy Mack Twain bred. When Roy raised a litter he only kept three pups, one for Dave, one for himself and a spare. Roy stated that jealous hunters had bad mouthed his dogs so much that was not willing to share. It took me years to talk him out of a chance own some of his Mack Twain dogs.

Ken Risley

Ken, your post on the Mark Twain dog that Roy had was exactly why I made this thread. Having a good dog and getting beat so bad by a Top Coon Dog is a eye opening experience. I respect your opinion of a Top dog as you have owned and hunted with such a animal. Most folks never see one and do not even know they exist. My first experience hunting with one sure spoiled me. I have hunted over 60 years and only seen or hunted with 3 that I called a Top Coon Dog. Now, I know others existed that I never got to see or hunt with. I posted this thread to hear about others experience with a Top Coon Dog. Dave
