Nice pix Scott.

Now you know that Buck wouldn't tackle that National Forest alone.....right?

I was along, but we actually didn't have to walk more than 300 yards to the dogs. Twice they stayed in the bottom and then they brought one out of the creek crossed the road on up on the left side about 250yards. The first 75 yards were uphill but after that it was fine.

I don't mind hunting it by myself but I don't think Buck -a- Roo would want to go there on his own...

Yep...

I knew that Mike...Buck-a-roo called before he picked you up and said he was heading for the big mountain tonight...I asked if he was feeling OK and then he said he was on his way to pick you up...otherwise it might have been the last time any of us had heard from him...eh?

The dogs look good Mike, I guess if you get the dogs right and really crankin' it's not so bad hitting the "big woods". Then again...even if they're crankin'...if there isn't a coon around...you're still liable to make a long trek...glad it didn't turn out that way...looks like it was a blast.

That blonde coon that Scott got is a dandy...it's been a few years since I've seen one like that is a tree.

Moe's 2nd night out.

I was doing a little work with Buddy (sire was Yank). Was having Moe ride alongfor box time, and if things worked out I was going to walk him around a pond damm alone.

Buddy had treed a coon and I gave it to him, I put Buddy up an walked down the road then walk over into the about 10 feet and dropped down a drag for about for about 175 yds per Garmin. Got Moe out, walk down the path until he tryed to brake my arm when we went pass the drag. Remenber he is 56 pounds of puppy. I cut him loss and he opened up as he hit the woodline and took it to the tree. Got there arms around tree and getting loud. great job.

The above should have happen because Tom had done put that in him.

Loaded up and drove to the pond damm. He started working down the stream. Heck he open up' then he took and started to work the track. About 200 yds later he seem to be treeing. As I was walking to the tree, I remenber last year I treed a coon in a big old oak that bent over with a nice hole in it about 10 ft up. When I got there he was treeing that tree like he did the drag I had done for him. Wet marks around bottom of hole, Done alot of loving on him. That was the first time I was loving on a hollow tree.

Left and went home thinking may have to get him out again in a week or two. Only taking him out when to night is right.

Man what a dog. Thanks Tom

Update

Thanks for the update Rob, he's a nice pup and as much potential as any pup could have. He's ready for as much as you can hand to him based off what I see from his full mate brother. Slim will go from the let go, track and tree and he'll pile on a coon without a second thought. These pups will be 8 months old on Nov 29 so they've got a good foundation and a good start.

Enjoy the process Rob, it's not a race so do what you can when you can do it but remember that they don't get better without the repetitions so keep your expectations in line with the experience he gets and you'll be fine.

I heard that Buck "got er dun" again last night. He is turning into quite the handler. He must have hunted every night this week. He is going to have to get a new pair of boots for Christmas. Those EverReady hounds just keep on keepin on.

Hunting

Hey Tim, the weather is mostly crappy like it is most of the time this time of year

We are in our 9 day gun deer season right now so we don't do any coon hunting during this time...too many deer hunting folks who still think a coon hound can catch and kill a deer

Anyway, we take a few days to hunt deer anyway and work fills up the rest of the time so this week is a nice break for Dave and the dogs. Hopefully, we'll have some decent weather and not so much snow and cold real early and we'll be able to still get the dogs out a bunch of times and train on the weekends.

We've got a big hog of a buck above the house, 12 points and 20-22" spread at least...he's pretty smart and lives real close to us all year long but we'll hope he slips up later on this week and see if we can bag him. My son Jason had him close but couldn't get a shot and he says he's a real stud. It's extremely steep and very thick on the ridge above my house and darned hard to get them up if they don't want to get up. We've got a pretty good chance of some snow on Wednesday and Thursday of this week so if it's enough to stick, it will make it a lot easier to see the deer in the woods and maybe his time will run out...eh?

We should be back coon hunting by next week and once the dogs get used to hunting in temperatures in the mid teens again, we'll hope to find us a few of these big, ridge running boar coons and get Slim in on some fast and furious action. I've got one on the burner for you Tim, he might have the goods to be a real nice hound.

Tom put a nice female on one of those empty burners you got for Jason and me. We would love to have another T-TOP hound in the mix.

Female

We haven't kept a female back for awhile but the last litters from Moose and Yank out of Angel and Leinie had some real nice females in there. I think both of the Moose and Leinie females are doing something like these males are so hopefully we'll be able to get that cross done again, somewhere down the road. I'm hoping to get one more litter out of old Angel but we'll let nature take its course I guess and see what she's able to do. We'd be real happy to fix you up with something worth investing in so the next crosses we make, we'll make sure we get it done.

Somewhere down the road, I'd like to mate Cherry to Yank or Moose if I don't go back to Ace, and then we'll see how things shape up. We'll be giving Cherry some opportunities to finish and see what she does. She is just coming out of heat and we skipped her so that we can put some time on her. Hopefully we'll have a good winter so we can do a little more yet this year. She'll be ready to go in the spring and then we'll see. Woofter did a good job with her as far as giving her some good woods time and we'll take it from there and see how it shapes up. Spring seems like a long ways away at this point but time passes no matter what we do so it'll come for sure.

Dogs

Man-oh-man...those dogs sure look good Buck. You know I love to see the big guy in the woods and Frog and Hurnie are looking real good too. These days are memory builders, those kinds of dogs, all together, all at one time in a man's life...how good is that?

We'll hope to get some time in the woods yet this fall...but winter is trying to move in and showing some signs that it's not that far off anymore. This morning is 15 degrees above with the wind at 12 gusting to 20 and that makes it feel like about 4 above zero. The woods are open and looking out the window, it doesn't seem so bad but it's deceptive...the air has a bite to it.

It will get better, now and then, temperature-wise over the next month so if the deep snow holds off, we'll still get some good dog time in.

As far as deer hunting goes...we'll see what we can stir up from Thursday through Sunday, when we're able to hunt...maybe a turdy pointer just around the corner...eh?

Gus

It's good to see that ol' Gus is still alive and kicking Buck, he's kind of a blast from the past. I hope the guy who owns him is having fun with him...it looks like Gus isn't missing too many meals so he's being taken good care of from the looks of it

It's good to see Sally getting on the wood, she's a good ol' girl and has done good for the breed and time will surely prove that out in a big way if I guess right.

We'll look forward to seeing pictures of Moose with Sally and /Willow, it will be a family portait for sure. I wish the ol' boy was still alive to fit into that picture but I guess he'll have to show up in the pups and future generations.

It's cold up this way with the last two days only reaching the low 20s for highs and down in the mid teens at night. We've got a winter weather advisory for tomorrow starting around mid day through about midnight with freezing mixture of rain and snow and eventually all snow and then wind and COLD...again. I hope it at least leaves a little ground cover for deer hunting on Thursday and the weekend...that would be nice. Then it can clear up and warm up so we can get a few good weeks of coon hunting in yet this fall and early winter...not too much to ask for...eh?

Good luck on the upcoming hunt with Sally and Willow, I'll look forward to that update.

Keeper...

That's a keeper Carl...real nice buck. The one above the house here is close to like that from the reports I'm getting and he's still alive and kickin' as of today. I'll be out after him tomorrow for as long as I can stand it in the cold and wind so maybe he'll screw up and give me an opportunity.

That buck is as nice a bow kill as I've seen in awhile, congratulations!

National forest

Hey Buck, seeing as how you were able to post some pictures...you guys must have made it out alive...eh?

Dogs look good, I hope it was a good time...sure looks like it was.

Up here, the wind is blowing 20 MPH and the temperature at 18 above zero...wind chill at 1 above zero...I was sitting in the deer stand as the sun came up but I didn't last too long and I was froze darn-near solid...I think I'd rather be coon hunting in Virginia.

It's supposed to warm up a bit by the weekend so maybe I'll still get out and try to bag something then...it will take that long for me to thaw out...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
