It was a balmy 20 degree's with a 15 mph wind tonight. Near perfect hunting weather. Broke a mean sweat humping this thing out. LOL
JJ worked this cold track for an easy hour before she treed it. The snow on the ground and her hot nose kept it slow and easy. Then there was the creek she didn't want to cross. Either did I .
One of those with 4" of water and bottomless silt. But she finally found a spot she could jump and pushed it up about 300 yards. It was a nice one.

Hard work...

That's pretty cool Scott...this is the time of year and those are the kinds of nights that a dog has to earn the meat they tree...that's a nice looking coon, good size and looking like good fur.

It's 14 here this morning and a winter storm watch for Friday-Saturday for 5-9" of snow. I'm hoping it stays somewhere else but...we'll take it the way it comes...eh?

We were going to have a few guests from southern Iowa this weekend but we called it off...not looking to be fit weather to be out and about in, especially with a lot of road time involved.

Dogs are doing good...looking hard and full of the dickens waiting to get out hunting but we'll have to see what shapes up over the next few days...hopefully nothing serious and plenty of hunting days still to come.

She definitely earned this one. Her strikes were few and far between. The 8 wouldn't have gotten her. But it wasn't her normal mouth. Then I couldn't find it. I knew it was there because the coon ran up a leaner and I could see the tracks in the snow right up into the tree. There was only one spot I thought it could be. So I rifled around just below it and he gave me a quick eye. LOL Down he came. I love my new scope. The 50mm objective is awsome for that type of shot.
Snow eh?? Crap. I didn't hear about it. So maybe it's just up by you. WERE IT BELONGS!!!. BAWWWW!!! I was going up to Aubs Fri. night. We'll see I guess. I hate the slip and slide in them ridges, on a mule.

Yep...

I'm ready...it started about an hour ago and it's starting to pile up already. I don't think it's anything too serious, maybe 4-6" up here but a little more to the south and west but not so far away that it couldn't end up here...

It will be fun to watch the pups tomorrow morning...they've never seen snow yet so it should be interesting. I was hoping it would hold off awhile longer yet but...it's winter in Wisconsin so I guess any day is a good day to snow...eh?

Good night...

That's a pretty good night of hunting considering the conditions...it started snowing real hard up here around 6:00 PM and didn't stop until early this morning....looks like 6-7" based off how the tire tracks look in the driveway.

She did good Scott, that's a good night of hunting for any dog from any where in the country but especially with those conditions moving in on you.

Well......time to go out and move some snow...

Thanks Tom.
Moose X Leinie pups are going to some outstanding pups.
JJ sire was hot nosed and all track and no tree. With Moose in the mix. You'd think they'd be some of the best out there and better the breed in the future. To think you pretty much gave them away. There's going to be people out there that are going to kick themselves for not grabbing one of them up.
Myself included..
We'll see how JJ does tonight in 4" of snow.

Snow...

Looks nice in the picture but I was sick of it pretty quick today after pushing it around for about 4 hours. Got everything opened up pretty good and it's a balmy night tonight with more snow in the air but....tomorrow a low of 5 above and by Monday and Tuesday mornings, could be below zero by a few degrees. It will warm up a bit again but by this time of year...warm up means low to mid 20s and lows in the low teens to high single digits. Hopefully we'll get a warm spell where we can hunt a few nights and train a bit more but I think winter is here. We'll still get some training done but snow kind of makes it a whole different ballgame...oh well...We can still get some good hunting in with this little bit of snow on the ground as long as we don't pile it up too much.

The Moose and Leinie pups will show up in the next 6 months if I guess right. Slim is starting to fill out and look more like Moose but he still has Leinie's body style...long and lean and very athletic. He goes from track to tree already at 8 months old so I'd sure like to get a few more reps on him yet this fall and early winter...he'll have some pretty good experience and that will get him ahead of the game for sure...

Cold

Hay guys it is cooling off down here to.I wouldn't know what to do with weather like you guys have up there.
Tom I hunted with Richard Lambert and Dale Weaver lastnight. I didn't get there till late. We had or hanging of the greens at church and I wanted to be there for it , so I was late. After I got them tracked down we had a nice short hunt and a good visit. They are both nice guys, I wish we would have had more time to hunt. Richard and Rex have to go home today, something came up that has cut there trip short. We did tree a couple coon and a couple trees. The dog work I got to see was good, like I said it was a short trip so ol Deuce didn't have much time to screw up to bad. I look forwad to hunting with Richard and Rex down the road someday.
The Moose / Leinie cross will be great. We need a female from that cross to put under Deuce. There are a couple more crosses in the works that turn my head around also.
Moose / Hurnie pups, Jason and I have got to have some of that as well. One of those pups and Deuce should be EXPLOSIVE. I have talked to Buck a couple times via PM and I can tell he is excited about that cross already. We will see what happens down the road .
Stay warm.

Tom, you should be awfully proud of those T-Top hounds. First there was that Rocky X Roxie cross that produced Rat. Then there was that Rat X Raven cross that produced all of those top Gr Nt Ch hounds. Then there was Rabble who has produced 7 Gr Nt Ch's so far. Now there are all of those top Gr Nt Ch males out of Rabble that are going to reproduce numerous top hounds. I can name Haze, Rage, Shaker, Deuce. And then there are several Nt Ch's on their way to Grand such as Moose. There is no telling what the future holds for the Great Grand Pups of Rat. I can only hope that Tom Tom will reproduce like his Great Grandaddy Rat, his Granddaddy Rabble and his Daddy Haze. This thread is aptly titled: Rabble Rouser....Next Generations...and it will go on and on and on.

Satisfying

I'd say that it brings a lot of satisfaction when we see those young dogs coming on and keeping with the tradition we're used to seeing. For years we have always been confident and we counted on the fact that we could get the next generation fired up and going at any time because we keep our breeding as close as we can to what we want to see for the future. Looking back, I wish we would have collected Rat and Rabble Rouser before it was too late but it doesn't change the fact that we still see what we're looking for in these new generations out of Yank and others.

Tom Tom, Deuce, Yank, Haze, Ace, Moose and others have what it takes to keep producing top quality hounds for many years to come and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to see a lot of it come to pass.

We've got another crop of young hounds here in the yard, led by Slim and Gun and they will make some noise come spring...maybe even before that. It never gets old and I'll never get sick of seeing these new generations prove out...that's what it's all about as far as I'm concerned...the rest will fall where it may...

I'm very confident that there is a lot more good to come, we have barely scratched the surface with some of these young hounds that are just now finishing at 2-3 years of age and we have some very good crosses in mind right here over the next couple of years that will keep what we've worked so hard for, right up close and strong and that's exciting for sure.

Good stuff...

Great pictures Mark...it had to be great to start off so good this year. I get a kick out of thinking about Cuz going coon hunting...I'll bet he was pretty well wore out looking for one up where you guys were at. I liked how you described the next time or two that he got the chance to go...put his nose in the track and took off down the line and was on the wood treeing hard when you got to the trees...that's good...I'll bet he got a real kick out of munching on one of those big cats. He never struck me as one that was going to have too much fear of anything he came across so it's looking like he's going to work out both ways...coons and cats...that's good, I'll look forward to seeing him under one of those cat trees somewhere down the road.

Good luck with the rest of the season, I'll be looking forward to more pictures and updates...it's almost like being there.

Sign of things to come...

Deuce looks good...on the wood. He has shown some signs of being a reproducer Don although it takes a long time and a lot of effort to prove that out one way or the other. It is always good to see a litter turn out from a young dog like him, it's all the more reason to keep him fit and to find the right females for him to be put on. It takes a mix of two dogs to make a good cross and the only way we know is to do it and then see the pups through. If you've got a good foundation to start with and if you can get females that were put together in the same kind of way...then the odds favor success and it sure looks like you've got at least half the equation standing on that tree...eh?

We got about 2" of snow today but kind of a mild day with a high near 30 above. Sounds like an interesting next couple of days though...winter storm watches in effect starting tomorrow late afternoon and the best they can do is say that it could be 6" of snow...or it could be 12" of snow, depending where you happen to call home in about a 300 mile swatch of territory that pretty much includes all of West Central Wiscosin...which is where we call home. Oh well...we've got wood in the shed and the hounds are bedded dry and safe with plenty of feed and water to keep that inner fire burning...so let is snow.

The next blast of winter weather is going to start Sunday night through Tuesday morning...By Monday morning we're looking at about 15 below zero and somewhere near the same for Tuesday morning before it will think about warming up a bit...winter in Wisconsin...ya gotta love it...eh?

We keep wishin' for mild weather so we can hunt but if we get a foot of snow on top of the 7" we alerady have and 20 MPH winds like they're talking through Saturday, we'll have 4' high drifts on the edges of the woods and fence rows...and my legs aren't that long so we might be done for this season...I guess we'll let it play out and see what happens.

I hope you folks down south can enjoy a decent winter this year and get some good hunting in on those hound dogs...enjoy it while you can because summer heat will be just around the corner again before you know it.
