Nice picture Richard...I see you're getting the hang of the camera...Tom is a good looking hound and it sounds like he's got a good amount of talent also...pretty nice to look forward to something like that...and for a long time to come based off his age...he's just a baby yet.

It's warm today, near 37 and the snow is at least settling a bit. They've got a dense fog advisory starting this afternoon through tomorrow...all that warm air over the deep snow cover making for interesting weather.

It looks like a good time...the dogs look good.

You would not have been near as proud of Tom Tom last night. Yes, Tom Tom does have a lot of "raw" talent. I turned him loose with my 10 mos old that had never been out. He ran/trailed "something" probably a fox/coyote for about an hour and he traveled 5 miles according to the Garmin. I found him treed about 30 yards from a house and had to sneak in and get him with my light out. It was a little hairy as I was not in a very nice neighborhood. His sister Sheba has taught him this new trick. "Run the first thing that you come to until you come across a coon track and then pull off and get treed" is what it is called. I guess that it is that time of year. Cold weather and very few coons make for interesting nights. Oh well, don't you just love to hunt pups?

It's kind of funny to think about it Richard...I'll bet your torn between breaking him and encouraging him...eh?

I'm not a fan of that kind of trait so I break pups when they show me they're willing to run something other than a coon. If they're old enough to run it, they're old enough to have it burned out of them.

One of the most frustrating things I can remember was when I was competition hunting Rebel. I kept coming up against a Walker dog that would strike on anything, as soon as he'd stumble across it...he came tracking right through where we parked the trucks one night chasing what I'm sure was a fox. The other dogs paid no attention and went hunting the other direction. An old Blue dog struck and started tracking an honest strike while that Walker dog was still chasing that fox a mile the other direction...as soon as she had opened up two or three times, that Walker was quiet and the next time we heard him bark, he was locating a tree a step ahead of that Blue dog and Rebel. I hate it when that happens...I knew the guy that owned him and I told him that he had the perfect competition hound...he just smiled and said..."I know it". He told me he couldn't stand to hunt the dog for coons because all he did was chase trash all night but as long as there was a straight dog anywhere close, he'd get first tree on them as often as not and was always carrying first strike...pretty hard to beat a dog like that most nights. He won through Nite Ch class to Grand Nite in no time and he beat me and Rebel at least twice in the process and on nights when Rebel was doing a heck of a job.

So...the moral to the story is...I'd have a hard time following a dog like that and an even harder time being proud of him carrying the title knowing how he earned it.

Dogs can be broke...most of us have had to deal with a stray trash chase now and then and it's really no big deal as long as we get them broke before finishing their career in competition. A Garmin and a Tri-Tronics........ahhhhhhhhhhhh...what a combination...they might be able to outrun us but they can't outrun electricity and they can't hide with the Garmin watching their every move...life is good!

Tom, I break them but I do it real slow. Tom has not had a problem until Sheba showed him how much fun it was to run foxes. I don't think that he will run a deer, they go too fast for him. I learned the hard way that you have to be careful. Sally used to come running back to you if another dog struck a deer. I once had a young walker dog that could be a mile through the country running a deer but if another dog opened my lil walker dog would be with him in 3 seconds. It took me forever to completely break that hard headed little rascal but I did. I guess that I was more hard headed than he was.
Buck, is that what you call "a belly rubbing, slobber slinging tree dog"? I guess that I will have to get me some rubber gloves.

Richard I got to hear ole slobber slinger from up on top of the mountian he did have the mountain a roaring

His ole trashy sister was off cold trailing some ole critter

David and Buck waited in the truck for Mike and me has we had to go about a mile to get our dogs and when we got back all the oatmeal cakes were gone

Yep...hard headed pretty much sums up what it takes to be a dog trainer Richard...it's a good trait to have doin' what we do.

I'd say that's a pretty good description...belly rubbin'...slobber slingin' TREE DOG!

Wendell...the best lessons in life are those learned the "hard way"...don't leave the oatmeal cakes alone in the same vicinity as Buck if you're headed out on a dog rounding up expedition...it's like a law of nature...or something...eh?

That's a great picture Carl...I'd say they're both about the right size for each other. I always say that it's never too early to introduce the youngsters to the sport.

I enjoyed the visit today with you and Brandon...sorry if I got to rambling about the training stuff...sometimes I can't help myself

We'll run into each other again, somewhere down the road this New Year and I'll look forward to it to hear how those nice young hounds that you guys have, are coming along.

Yesterday when we talked, it was 34 degrees above 0 and this morning it was at 0 degrees...back to reality...eh?

I could not stay in so I told the wife I would stay at the truck but with the help of my friends and a good sled and garmin we made 2 trees at just under 400 yards first tree cuz was not no were to be found and his gamin got interfered with so I left the guys who were figuring out the second track I beeped up cuz in a different canyon so I sledded into him but as I shut the sled off I could hear the pack roarin over the hill when we got to the tree all were there good way to call it a day

Nice pictures Mark, that had to be a great day of hunting to have it all work out the way it did. I'll bet there were a few anxious moments at first when you didn't see Cuz with the pack but I guess he showed that he's willing to get the job done even by himself.

The pictures of the lions are great also, real good camera work.

It looks like it was plenty cold based off the frost on the cat's face but a great looking day otherwise.

It was below zero here this morning but otherwise a great looking day outside, blue sky and lots of sunshine. I was standing at the back door looking out this morning and I saw a dandy buck walking just below the ridge top out behind the house...he had a lot of horns on his head...probably the one we saw earlier in the season...it's good to know he survived...he'll be a dandy next year.

It was good talking to you when you called, it sure sounds like it was a fun day.

I know that Buck is headed to the Grand American and is probably there right now. I just wanted to wish him the best of luck out there and hope that he has a good experience win or lose.

Around here, winter is in full swing with cold nights and days that can't seem to get up to 20 above but...it's winter in Wisconsin so I guess we'll make the most of it.

I have enjoyed visiting with some of you folks over these last couple of weeks and I wish you all the best of luck in life and with your Red dogs in this New Year.

I'll be making a trip to Georgia for a week or so the week starting Jan 24 and staying through the 27th so I'm hoping the weather is decent while I'm there so I can get a break from this cold and snow.

I sure am looking forward to being able to mess with the pups again but it's going to have to moderate a bit before we'll be able to do it.

Tom, did you have any trouble putting your hat on this morning? Did it feel like it had shrunk? I know that Tom Tom's win did not make any difference to level headed Dave. These Rabble grandpups are something else. It just keeps getting better and better. I am going to retire Tom Tom now and stud him out. But first he is going to have to learn to raise his leg to pee. The guys in my cast made fun of him because he still squats. Da Moose is loose in Tennessee now. He actally did a good job at the GA and was treeing coons and leading his cast both nights until he treed those mangy South Carolina coons that had lost the hair on their tails. I guess that it is a "Sally thing" as Tom also loves them and she had that problem at an early age. It is now on to the Winter Classic. I can't wait. You will have to swing by Albany on Sun morning, the 30th to get your picture taken.

I treed this female Sunday.Dogs were Boomer, Shelly,Cuz,and Hanna.It was Hannas first race that she made from start to finish she is 7 mo.old. The cat made a kill about 2 miles in. We cut the track at midnite and it snowed and blowed all nite.The track was barley visible by daylite but they ran it like they were looking at it. It turned into a pretty day

Great pictures Mark, that's good stuff and the pictures really give a feel for what's going on.

You've got a real knack for getting a good photo, the details are about as good as it gets.

I can't think of a too much better way to kill the winter...good stuff!
