Color
Some folks have a color preference and that's fine...if a person can line up everything we'd like in a hound and then have it all come out just like we planned...life would be good...eh?
I don't really care I guess, Redbones come out all shades of red and that's fine with me but we get our share of dark pups so we usually have one we can keep back if everything else looks like it's stacking up like it should. On the other hand, if I see characteristics that are stronger in a lighter pup, that will be the one we'd want to start. Most times, we end up with what's left so I don't get a choice but when I have a special or first time cross, we try and keep a little of everything to start, just to make sure we're on the right track.
These pups all have decent mouths and good attitudes. Considering the fact that it was the first time some of these pups had been turned loose to run a drag trail, I was happy with the outcome. I can tell well before we get to the start of the drag, if a pup is engaged or not and all of these were. They can wind the scent and start coming to attention because they know what a coon is and that was enough to overcome any apprehension they might have had being away from the confines of familiar ground. They're 8, 10 & 11 months old and they're ready for action. I don't think it will take much refreshing this spring to get them all ready to tag along at night and then it's a matter of them getting put where there are coons and plenty of repetitions.

Unrealistic expectations are a roadblock to success, judge your dogs by what they are ready to give not by what you wish they'd do.
