Fun...

Yep, it was a lot of fun today. I have been working these pups on the lead for several weeks now and they behave pretty good for youngsters. Dave had Slim in the woods several times last fall at 8 months old and he was on every track and tree. He is wired and very intense and he's built to go so I'd guess that when he learns his business, he'll be tough in competition. We won't know that for sure until he grows up a bit but from what I can see, he's got the goods, just like his daddy does.

I found a pile of coon tracks in the springs below the house earlier this morning so I know they're scratching around down there trying to find anything at all to eat. I should be able to walk Slim down through there when we get a bit warmer at night and I'd bet he'd track and tree one if he stumbles across a decent track.

Anyway, I'm hoping the big storm goes somewhere else so we don't add to this snow that's still packed on the ground...if we can get past it and into some warmer days, we'll be back at it in no time.

Gun sure is a looker. He might be another Moose. I took Gun's lil sis out tonight. She's starting to yip and yap on a track now. She threw a locate and treed with Tater. I was happy as a pig in a poke.
Second drop she didn't do so well. They got down in a creek and she checked back in. She was iced up. Took her back to the jeep.
Tater finished it in style.

EZ

Cool...........good stuff!

There's not too much better than seeing a young hound come on like EZ was doing in that video clip.

I agree Scott, folks will be hearing about Gun in the not too distant future. It's a nice problem to have to have a young rooster like him competing for the first string with another young rooster like Slim.

I'd guess we'll be having some good nights with those two in the not too distant future and then we can toss EZ into the mix and have a heck of a deal...eh?

LOL Heather. I'll post a "Turn it down Heather" warning just for a friendly reminder.

Tom,
I have to admit. I was really surprised at EZ last night. I was hoping with Tater's cold nose, she'd get more in on the track. I hoped that the other night with JJ in the mix. But JJ is just a lay up artist. I just don't get very many long tracks with her and I'm not complaining at all.
Time for a live one for EZ and do a drag. I'll work on that this weekend depending on the weather. She's ready now.
It's only up from here.
Scott

Yep...it's good stuff Scott, I was tickled to hear that she decided to cut loose also. Gun is a real nice prospect and I'm really looking forward to getting him out and about with Yank and Cherry. We'll probably split Yank and Cherry and put Slim and Gun with one or the other and then switch them around so they get more used to different styles. Yank is pretty open on the track and he's about as mild mannered as a dog can get so is a real good hound to put these youngsters with. We want to give Cherry a lot of hard work starting out because I suppose she's due in heat around April so if we don't get her out and about before that, then it will put her off until late April or May. I don't mind so much I guess, once the weather turns so we can get going, she'll get plenty of work.

Anyway, I get a kick out of these youngsters when they start to show that they want to participate and based off what I see with Gun, those pups from that Ace and Cherry cross are good ones in a lot of ways.

I'm hoping the weather leaves us alone but I saw a lot of deer out in the fields during broad daylight today so they're giving us a warning that something is coming.

We're hoping to get back at it this weekend, at least with training but if I have to wade through another foot of snow...it's gonna have to melt first.

Tom-

update on Reba. She opened on track and treed well last night on a wild coon. This is the first signs she's shown in several times out so it looks like she's ready to start solid now.

Reba

That's good to hear Joe, if she takes off like her big brother, she'll be a handful for sure.

I think Cuz has two first place wins on him out west...he wasn't really ready to be in against competition but he struck and treed tracks as he came to them and stayed like he should...sometimes that's all it takes...eh?

On a different note...I heard from Bret H. last night, he called while his Badger pup was treed and he sure sounded good. He's 11 months old and has started hunting out and striking tracks and treeing them.

Badger...He looks good...on the wood.......and he sounds good too...

Bret said that this giant vine went up into a big ol' den tree but Badger was sure it was where the coon climbed and was reaching up as high as he could reach smelling the vine and treeing good.

He's a real nice prospect Bret, he's figuring some things out at a young age and I'd guess he's going to be a real treat to take to the woods by the time fall and winter comes around again.

Snow

The snow is done and warmer weather is on the way...I hope.

We ended up with about 5" from this storm, real wet and heavy snow but melting already. It's supposed to be a good spell of weather coming over the next 10 days or so with mid 40s during the day and several nights where it won't drop below freezing...a good sign for sure.

We should be able to get back at it this weekend...I'm looking forward to the next step.

Pups...

Great pictures Carl, those little guys look like they're ready to get after it...eh? Gotta love it!

Collide has been reproducing some nice hounds and mixing his abilities with some T-Top blood was a good move from what I can see here.

I think Chance is a great story and the fact that you can now produce pups out of her and that real nice male, that are so willing to get with it at that age, is a wonderful addition to the saga.

I'll tell that whole story some day, after she helps make you rich and famous

Hunts

It won't be long and the hunts will be starting up in this part of the country and then there will be something every weekend. I'm sure we'll run into you somewhere down the road Carl, although there is still some snow that needs to get gone before we'll climb these hills too much.

By next weekend, I'd guess that the snow will be mostly gone and lots of open ground. I'll also have my tracks for the Ranger mounted and then there won't be too many places I can't get to...snow or no snow.

We'll be at it again tomorrow with the pups and we'll see how far they've come in a week. It's usually pretty amazing how they will progress from one week to the next at this stage...I'd guess it won't be long and they'll be about ready to drag along to the woods.

Training day

It was a great day to mess with pups and we got a good session in today.

We are working on 4 male pups....

2 males are out of...

Nt. Ch. PR T-Top Northwoods Yankee
and
Dual Gr. Ch. PR T-Top and Hill Top Shelly

The two males out of Yank and Shelly are nice pups, one is very dark and has a blue collar on and the other is more cherry red with a yellow collar on.

One male is out of...

Nt. Ch. PR T-Top Northwoods Yankee

and

Dual Gr. Ch. PR Soggy Bottom T-Top Shadow

I call this male Deacon and he also has a yellow collar on but is very dark in color.

The other male is out of....

PR Bristol Ridge Red Ace

and

PR T-Top Red Cherry

This male has a green collar on and we call him Gun.

There are two clips here and lots of action so enjoy... (Click on the pictures to see the video)

This is the second time we ran these pups, on a drag this year. Gun has been along last fall and did a wonderful job already then at 5-6 months. I think he's just coming 10 months now and I really like this male, he's one to watch for in the next year or so.

The other three males have only been doing this part of training since last weekend and I'm real happy with how they are progressing. These pups are all under a year of age and will easily be ready for the woods by the time spring falls on us for real.

There are only a couple more of these sessions that are necessary with this group and hopefully we'll get some real nice weather over the next couple of weeks so that we can move them forward and then on to their new homes, where ever that might be.

In one of the videos, you can see the Ranger way up in the field behind where the dogs are treed...I still haven't learned my lesson and believe me...that unit is stuck tight and will have to sit there until the snow melts off this week so I can get in there with the tractor to get it pulled out of the deep snow where it's buried. You wouldn't think that the snow is a couple feet deep out there yet but...it is...

Anyway, I hope you're all looking forward to spring as much as we are and I hope you're all having as much fun with your young hounds as we are with these that we're working with.

Yep...

You're right about not missing too many meals...plus I had just fed them earlier in the day. I let them eat what they want in the winter and keep the extra weight on them because it helps keep them from wearing out when it's so miserably cold. The older dogs don't look quite so thick but I don't mind if they do...we'll wear it off of them in good time.

There's Kentucky blue on one of them for sure...

We're supposed to get real nice weather almost all this coming week so I'm really hoping the snow goes...you can't believe how much there is down in there and I'll guarantee you that the Ranger was hung up flat bottom on the frame with all six wheels spinning off the ground. One minute we're on top skating along and the next...whump...down we go. Like I said...I should know better but...I guess I don't. Now that I think about it...I think it was Dave's fault...he was riding right next to me...cheering me on...sort of...

More good times to come...

Great pictures Mark...I'll bet it really felt good getting out and about again after being laid up. I know it's still tough going but I'm hoping it gets better every day for you.

Dogs are looking a bit like mine...enjoying the good life long enough...eh?

We've got nice weather predicted all week so we're looking forward to maybe breaking the dogs out this next weekend...we'll see how it shapes up.

Tracks

Got my tracks in today...as soon as enough snow melts to get the Ranger out of the drift it's stuck in, we'll mount them up and then we're ready for action. They're quite a system I can't wait to get them on and and put them to work. I can see why they said they'll go over just about anything...pretty impressive.

Temps in the 50s for the next several days so by tomorrow night, I should be able to get my rig out...one way or the other...

Tom, you'll love that thing once you get the tracks on it. My buddy manages a ranch out here and they have one and I tried hard to get it stuck and couldn't do it. Best thing is I can take the dog box out of my truck and it fits in the back of the ranger. It's slow with the tracks, about 25mph top end and if you don't have a cab the snow it throws on you can be miserable but like I said you can go anywhere with it so the good outweighs the bad.
