Pups...
Yep, we sometimes forget that there's a lot to be learned for those youngsters, especially if we've had the pleasure of only following an older dog for awhile.
All in all...it's what makes the sport fun for me these days. Since I got the Ranger fixed up, there aren't too many places I can't get around to anymore back in these hills and although it was touch and go going up to that tree that we made, it was all good in the end...being as sure footed as I am and all...
Folks need to just lighten up sometimes and enjoy the ride...everything isn't going to work out just right every time we turn them loose but eventually, time passes, dogs learn and then we're back enjoying the fruits of our efforts again.
When male dogs reach about a year and a half of age, they start going through puberty and a lot of things are changing inside their bodies and also inside their heads...I call this period the "stupid phase" and I've seldom ever had a dog that didn't go through it. Lots of folks send real good prospects down the road at about that time but I always tell them that we have to just grit our teeth and hunt them through it because if they were good going in, they'll be even better coming out.
Females are different...they go through a "stupid phase" every 6 months or so. Based off how Cherry is acting...I'd say we'll be seeing her heat cycle about any day now. I can say one thing about Cherry though...she is a ball of fire, full of hunt, has a locate to die for and is a solid tree dog...we'll get her over her affliction to chase something other than a coon...right quick...and then she's gonna make a splash this spring and summer...I may even take the reigns on this little spirtfire and Dave can focus on Yank if we decide to try and finish him to Gr. Nite.
Dave took Yank to a hunt last night and he was treed split as time ran out...if he scores the coon, he wins the cast and gets a win...the tree was hollow. He said it was a good running track that went a good distance but...that's the way the chips fall sometime. He looked good, things just didn't work out.

Unrealistic expectations are a roadblock to success, judge your dogs by what they are ready to give not by what you wish they'd do.
