Michael ,more than likely they were bakeing something in the oven ,,The only time I put any coals of any kind on top is to brown biscuits or cornbread or a cake,,lol ,but cooking beans or a stew I do keep a good amout of coals banked up around the sides of the oven .I'll look to see if i can find that one link about cooking outdoors in cast iron ,,darn good grub I'm here to tell ya !

ive cooked alot of coons in my dutch oven over a fire.put you some aluminum foil over the bottom of it, then put your young coon in there with some taters,carrots,celary,lemmon pepper,red pepper and black pepper.then fold the aluminum foil over the top of all that,throw the dutch oven in the coals and it want be long before your eating high on the hog.lol

skeets, I've never done a coon but i've done alot of squirrel stews,rabbit stews ,jambalaya ,chilis and just old regular beef stews .Oh forgot about my beans and cornbread ,,,lol,,But I have a cast iron griddle for pancakes/johnnycakes,,,fried bacon or ham,,,iron skillet for the eggs or taters ,you name it ,,like you say you can be eating high on the hog in short order .

Mr. skeets I've done that too ,,to me cast iron cookin is the way to fly . Get them seasoned out and take care of them properly and they will treat you right for a lifetime .

No skeets thats an older pic there,,I've got some in my sucker bottle now that is smaller than the smallest you see there . I'm re running some stuff now getting the really time consuming gold ,man it is small . If I can get this photobucket thing working again I'll post it. I just open the photobucket acct .yesterday got one pic moved ,then I don't know what went wrong ,I get a message saying I need some version from them to fix it .

Went out yesterday looking for a new area to prospect some looked at some flooded areas and some eroded /water washed stuff looks promising .

mr.west the creeks around here are to high to look for anything.i dont think ive ever seen it rain as much as it has here lately.i did try looking for gold in the creek in front of the house here,and found nothing but rocks.lol

Yeah ,I know what you guys are saying ,we go from drought conditions to flash floods . Dawg ,you are right those high waters will churn that gold up and move it on down the creek . Boys hang in there it will get better.

Is there any gold on the east side of South Dakota or is it all out west in the black hills. I hunt several real steep, deep valleys with little feeder creeks that feed into the Vermillion river. Many nights while walking along those creeks I have wondered if there could be any gold in some of these, they have some nice sandy, gravel bottoms.

mr.west theres still way to much water in the creeks around here to do anything. my family has lived here for over 200 years,so you would think if theres gold around here one of them was bound to find something,but ive never heard tell of it.iam still going to try,it dont cost nothing to look thats for sure.

I'm going to say yes ,just because of the glacial drift . It won't be as as much as out west in the Blackhills ,I'll do a little more research on this because I want to visit your state .
