You are correct, but it does not tell the whole story of what truly happened in that final cast. The 4 dogs in that final cast were made up of Ringo, Speck, Jr, and Queen. A Walker male, A Walker Male(registered English), a Blue English male and a walker female respectively. Back then the hunts were 3 hr hunts and this particular cast consisted of 2 Directors, 2 Judges, a guide and the 4 handlers. Interestingly enough the Queen female was owned by one of the Directors and the Speck dog had been raised by the other Director off of his stud dog. On the first turn out Ringo had 1st and 1st on a coon and the other 3 dogs covered him on it and it was scored. On the second turn out Ringo had 1st strike and the other 3 dogs got treed ahead of him but he went on past them a couple of hundred yards and got treed in on his tree for 1st. All three of the other dogs left their tree and went to cover Ringo. All three dogs were minused their tree points and were treed back in on Ringo's tree according to position. As the cast reached the tree after the alotted time they could see the dogs were treed on a big up rooted tree that had fallen over into another standing tree. As the lights hit the tree and the coon was easily seen sitting at the spot where the two trees joined. Both Ringo and the Jr dog tried to race up the leaning tree at the same time resulting in them both falling off on top of each other. There was never a dog fight but both dogs growled at each other while they untangled themselves from the fall and immediately went back to treeing as soon as they got back to their feet. The tree was scored at this time. Ringo was sitting at 400+ with 2 coons scored followed by Jr who had 225+, Speck had 75+ and Queen had either 25 or 50+. At this time the Directors pulled both judges aside along with the guide and had a 10 minute discussion about the two dogs that fell off the tree. Both Directors wanted them scratched, both judges were against it. The Directors told them they were running this hunt and both dogs were scratched for fighting. After Ringo was scratched there was almost 2 hrs left in the hunt and the remaining 2 dogs never treed another coon. Ringo walked through every cast during that week by getting deep and treeing coons, he had just won the Ohio state championship in dominating fashion. There were people making bets and taking odds by the 3rd night of the '79 ACHA World hunt( it was a 5 nite event) that Ringo would be the dog to win it. Mike Dohoney published a huge article in the Cooner around the First part of 1980 telling what had happened in this final cast. It seems to me they succeeded on getting rid of the 2 dogs in the cast to beat.
