I saw a picture of probably Chey and 3 copperheads he killed. Never saw one never want to.
Chuck told me today that the deer came in and ate the broccoli 😞 was really hoping 3 strands of wire and the scarecrow would keep them out.
An Amish couple came yesterday and picked blueberries for almost 5 hrs, today his son and his wife came and picked 30 qt in about 3 hrs. I went out and picked 2 qt after they left, I should have picked more, but the bugs were terrible and I couldn't deal with them.

Deer are destroying the garden 😞We bought something at Home Depot last night that's suppose to keep them out. Got home too late to get them out. Hope to get them out tonight, but getting home late from fishing and just getting supper ready at 8pm.

We have grn tomatoes, a few little cantaloupes and cucumbers. Hope the vines don't die where the deer ate all the leaves off. My in-laws have a few ripe tomatoes. But they didn't offer to share.

A few of my Cherokee Purple tomatoes are almost ready but none of the red varieties have turned yet. I got them in the ground a little later than usual because of all the spring rains. Mom picked a 5 gallon bucket yesterday and brought me up a few, she is canning tomato juice today. She also picked a bucket of cucumbers.
Here is a recipe for pickles you store in the fridge. These things taste like the Claussen style you find in the refrigerator section at the grocery store. I like to make a couple 1/2 gallon jars to keep in the back of my fridge. Mom makes a ton of these to give away, she should sell them!

Refrigerator Dill Pickles "Claussen Style"
20-25 small to medium cucumbers (for larger I quarter up so more can be packed into the jar)
2 quarts water
2 cups white vinegar
1/3 cup canning salt
1/3 cup finely minced onion
1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon black peppercorns
4 teaspoons minced fresh garlic

Mix all dry ingredients with the water and vinegar until salt is completely dissolved. When ready to use separate liquid from seasonings using a sieve. Reserve both parts!

4-5 wide mouth canning jars sterilized or you can use a couple 1/2 gallon jars as I mentioned above.
1 teaspoon dill seed or 2 sprigs of fresh dill in each quart jar.
1/2 teaspoon of pickle crisp per jar.

Wash cucumbers cut off 1/2 inch of the bottom of each one, half or quarter if nessesary.

Pack jars with cucumbers, evenly distribute seasonings between the jars then cover completely with vinegar/salt/water liquid. If you like hot stuff I sometimes add one jalapeno pepper. Using a knife run between the cucumbers to get rid of any air bubbles.
Place a flat lid on the jar and a ring loosely. Store in a completely dark area for 3-4 days. Each day check for scum and if any has formed skim off with a spoon and discard. Lightly shake the jars everyday and push any that have floated up under the vinegar solution, loosen ring back up after giving jar a shake. After 4 days tighten ring and store in the fridge.
I like to let them set in the fidge for a couple of weeks before eating, my brother is eating them in about day 2 lol. Pickles will keep refrigerated for 6-12 months.
If anyone has any other canning recipes or cooking recipes for our harvest please share.
Happy gardening!
Jen

I like beets, too; but haven't planted any for awhile. They're suppose to be good for you.

Not a dill pickle fan, Jen; but probably going to try your Cucumber and onions. Not much on cooking anything that has more than 4 or 5 ingredients. Betty Crocker is my friend 😃 When my son was little he told the neighbor, if it didn't come out of a box, he didn't like it. Love 💘 the brat!

Darn deer came in and ate the new squash plants, hope they'll be ok. 5 out of 8 broccoli plants look like they're gonna have some broccoli on them and the deer almost devoured them.

Now there is an idea! Does your now season open soon?
I do the boxed thing sometimes but these people down here are spoiled. Last night it was chicken in a cream sauce over fettuccini noodles w/ some fried green tomatoes. The sauce has chicken broth, heavy whipping cream, fresh spinach, garlic and sun dried tomatoes. Easy though to cook. Monday we had brauts on the grill and in an iron skillet on the grill I cooked yellow squash, green peppers and onions drizzled with olive oil some asparagus also with a little EVO and lemon pepper and mac & cheese. Usually I just mix dump and pour and call it dinner!
I've got some beets planted but they aren't doing the best, my daughter and I love them but Cheyenne not so much. I planted them in the garden clearing in the woods that is a weed patch. It had been covered in leaves and after we tilled it under and planted more weeds than you can imagine sprouted up, there's not enough time in the day to pull them. If I plant there next year I am going to have to mulch the whole thing. Anybody have any luck with cardboard in the ground through the winter for new garden spots?
I have thought about starting a few things for a fall garden.

We couldn't get a permit; you have to make a % of $ by farming before u can shoot for crop damage. We don't mind sharing with them, but they always seem to want more than their fair share. Maybe if there's alot around this fall, I'll try for 2. Usually someone wants one, we don't need more than 2. And usually, we each get one.

Don't know about the cardboard thing, Jen; but my SIL puts down deep newspaper in her flower beds...probably does the same thing.

Jen, Its the opposite around here. Chuck is just meat (venison, sometimes pork, not fond of chicken or beef because they raised it at home and he got tired of it....poor guy) and potato or rice guy.

Cheyenne will love me lol!! Actually my dad just bought me a little mini tiller at a sale he is tinkering with to get going so maybe I could use it. We have a big rear tine tiller but that thing scares me!
I made a gallon jar of salsa this morning before leaving for a hunt. There was no time for canning so it is just fresh in a big jar in the fridge. It looks pretty too with all the different colors of tomatoes in it. I'm proud everything I grew garlic, cilantro, opinion, jalapenos and the mators. So far this organic thing is working out but it is alot of hand picking of pests!
Hey Tar the OK Youth State Championship is going to be at Coalgate fairgrounds this year Nov. 4th. Shouldn't be too far from you. We are gathering donations right now so if you have any ideas I can get you in contact with the guy in charge or you can call me. Put it on your calendar to bring the grandkids, gonna whole day of fun stuff. Water race, treeing contest, coon in a bucket contest games and then of course bench show and hunt.

I gave my friend, Carol, tomatoes and peppers last yr, so she made me refrigerator salsa to try. That's the first time I ever had it.

I picked 8 cucumbers today and took 4 of them and some green tomatoes to another friend. We went to the casino this Am on the way home, I told her we have green tomatoes and hoped the deer would leave them alone so we get some ripe ones, she said she loved fried grn tomatoes.

We need a bench show judge and I will check on the moh. There is a group of cheerleaders that are going to running the concession stand for a fund raiser, they ran the it for the state hunt and I did a good job it helped them to get to go to nationals. As for that Victor feed you know what's in the bowls around here 😉. Good luck with your surgery!
Rex I prefer my salsa cooked by canning but the fresh refrigerator is still pretty good.
We had some good rain while out of town this past weekend but the wind blew over one of my best tomato plants that was loaded down with green tomatoes. I think I may try canning some green tomato relish this week like my grandma used to, no need to fry them all.

Checked the garden today. Picked a bunch of cucumbers. Gave some to the trimmer that came today to trim Jasmine's hooves. When he leaves here he goes to my friend's and trims her horses so I sent her over some, too. Have a few tomatoes and 3 heads of broccoli that I can get in the next day or 2. Darn deer came in and chewed on the okra...only had 5. 2 don't look too bad, not sure the other 3 will make it. Was probably iffy getting any anyways because I planted them so late.
Good luck with your surgery, Tar. If these injections, I'm supposed to get on my knee don't work, surgery is next thing for my right knee.
Jen, good luck to you, too; getting your Youth Championship organized, hope u have some good helpers.

We met with the host club Friday night and they have got nearly everything organized. So for most of it other than some paperwork I'm off the hook. We just have to order the plaques and get moh and bench show judge. I will try and get a few more donations from up my way to take with me.We did UKC Youth Nationals this summer and it went really well. This is going to be the first hunt my oldest grandson will be eligible to hunt in and he is excited. He will be 5 soon so our expectations are low for him to do any good but he will have a great time regardless.
My neighbors bees have been busy pollinating my flowers and garden the last few days. I have saw very few bees over the years here and I'm so glad he put in hives just down the road. Bees are something I would love to get but no idea on keeping them at all. We had a good dinner with some pork chops, corn, squash and new potatoes all cooked on the grill. I love summer food!
Jen

Yummy supper 😋, Jen.

My FIL had bees yrs ago. They all got sick and died. He bought more hives and tried starting over, but lost them, too.

We froze 6 pts of broccoli today.

Jen, I saw Chey's post of his hunting buddy.....Kash is a real cutie. Love seeing the kids with their dogs. Friday, we were at club having: BS, WR, FT and NH. Chuck had several young boys wanting to help him. He said one came up and sat down beside him and asked if he wanted to talk. Chuck said "about what?" and he told him about our dogs!! 😉
I picked more cukes, 6 tomatoes and a grn pepper yesterday.

Kash is a mess but we love him! My daughter's boyfriend was going hunting and Kash ask him if he would like some company lol. He is so not ready for school to start. Glad you all have kids involved at your club!
The weather has been cooler here and the garden is loving it! Okra is going wild and lots of green tomatoes that haven't started to turn yet. The cucumbers that were about done in the heat are blooming again. I saw where you were growing broccoli I have never grew any but I'm going to get some seeds and start a little fall garden along with some more lettuce, cabbage and beets. The beets I planted in the tilled clearing in the woods aren't doing worth a dang.

Don't blame Kash for not wanting to go back to school. I never wanted to go back either. It meant I had to start wearing shoes and when I got older bras, too.

Supper was out of the garden tonight: sliced cucumbers and tomatoes and breaded fried squash. The round zucchini are coming on. They look like little grn pumpkins. The other zucchini, u sent me seeds for are getting blossoms and 2 of the okra have one each! How long does it take a blossom to turn into an okra? Deer are still after the okra and squash. Lack of rain here is killing the cukes and cantaloupe, if we don't get some soon they'll die. We were going to haul some, but they keep calling for rain (and still are) so we didn't.

Lack of rain here is killing the cukes and cantaloupe, if we don't get some soon they'll die. We were going to haul some, but they keep calling for rain (and still are) so we didn't.

LOL...that should for be a lot of beets. At home mom canned everything. We had big canning cupboards, 2 potato bins and 2 apple bins. Always tried to get them full by fall.
When we get any, I freeze them. Chuck doesn't really like them so we haven't planted any for a couple of yrs.
