Tom, I just put this together as I was looking at an old magazine. You can't get much more linebred than that. Now I see how Haze has so much Chief X Kate blood. It is no wonder that Rabble and Haze crossed so well with Sally.

Bloodline

That's right Richard...it's wound tight for sure.

Consider the fact that Rat was out of Rocky and Roxy and that was a half brother/half sister cross with both of them out of Go Man Sam and the story should unfold even more clearly.

I had always thought/knew/heard that the T-Top hounds were linebred Go Man Sam, but now I know "the rest of the story".

Rexx

I heard from some folks from out west and they gave me an update on the nice young male they got from us who is out of the Moose and Leinie cross. I pasted their update at the bottom of this message so you can see it in their words..

This is Rexx...

Rexx in the foreground...

The "meat".....

In his own words....
Hey tom, My name is Nick L. me and my brother bought a dog from you a year and a half ago. Just wanted to tell you we are more then pleased with our male named Rexx(moose-Leine cross), He has really caught fire this season and treed 5 lions on his own. We have been hunting with other well known houndsman who have some really good big game bred hounds and Rexx has beat them to the tree everytime and last week he treed a big tom on his own while the other dogs were treed in another canyon on a female. He is a treeing fool and fast track dog with a pretty dang cold nose. I am excited to see him grow and if anybody asks you how your dogs do out west refer them to me and I'll tell them how pleased we are, because right now Rexx has been proving the rumors wrong that pure breed red bones can't hunt out west. I'll keep you posted on future adventures and just thought i would let you know. Thanks

I always enjoy these kinds of updates from folks. Not every dog ends up in competition but feedback like this is as rewarding as seeing them in the winner's circle in competition. After all...it's all about enjoying the process, what ever that might be...eh?

Possible crosses

We have a couple of possible crosses in the making and just wanted folks to give them some thought.

We really hope to be able to put Cherry back with Ace at least one more time this coming spring and we're thinking real hard about putting Gun on Douke...which will produce a real tight line cross with a good shot of wild card (Pete) Gun isn't a finished dog yet but has all the tools so we'll see what the spring brings.

January has been a little more like winter with colder temperatures and some snow but still a pretty mild winter for up here in the north.

We'll see what February brings but if it stays mild, we'll be rolling the dogs out and start getting their minds right for spring.

Good hunting...if any of you folks are getting some of those nice young hounds to the woods out of these next generations...I'd sure enjoy hearing about them...winters are long up here...

Young dogs

Hey Aaron...man-oh-man...it's good to hear from you. I kind of figured those ladies got the best of you but I see that you're still holdin' your own...eh?

We'll be getting after it pretty quick and we've got a couple of youngsters here under 2 years of age that are going to open some eyes and turn some heads I think. Those pups out of Griz and Sid should be about right for next fall so anything they show now is just frosting on the cake.

I heard from Tim the other day and it sounds like another pup from our "secret cross" is starting to show some good stuff and just 13 weeks old or so. I told Tim that I was planning to keep one of those but a guy showed up and took the last two females.

We'll be looking forward to getting down your way this spring and we'll get some coons treed I'd bet. Winter hasn't been so tough on us yet this year and February is already on us next week...where does the time go??

We'll be starting to mess with these youngsters around here as the weather allows...I don't especially like to teach them to go on the snow when spring is right around the corner but we'll keep their minds in the game now and then just so we don't have so much ground to make up when the ground opens up.

Take care Aaron, tell those girls hello and give them a big hug from the old fart that comes to visit now and then.

Double Rabble(Griz pup)

Tom, have more to report. After little Rabble bushed that deer a couple weeks ago, I thought this afternoon might make a good setup to try to recreate the scenerio again, but this time with an extra collar. He will turn 8 months old next Tuesday. Took hiim down on the bottom with just him and Lassie, my BMC. Heard him trying to run a track on a little patch of timber along the river, but figured he was trying to grub a rabbit track. He came out after a fashion and the 3 of us headed out of there. Got part way out and I didn't see him, so I stopped the Gator and listened. Heard him back down on the river and was giving some tongue. Headed back down and when I pulled up to the river, he was treeing in a hole on the river bank. Lassie went down there to see what he was doing and she pulled out a pint size coon and they finished it off in a short order. Rabble then retreived the coon to me proud as a peacock. I stuck it up in a crotch and spoke to him and he turned into a stand on the tree, tree dog and just kept it up, totally focused. I called Aaron let him hear it and he got pretty pumped.

That's pretty cool Tim...nothing like getting off to a good start...eh? They all start at their own pace but it's fun to see them show that kind of interest at that age...makes it easier to feed them for sure. When they're willing to do what he's doing at that age, most times there's no looking back, it just gets better and better as they mature.

Won't be long and you can pair him and that little male that the kid has and you'll be raising all kinds of heck

Dogs

Those are great pictures Mark...it's almost like I can hear them echoing out of the mountains.

It was good talking to you last night...I enjoy the updates a lot and look forward to living those experiences through what you guys are doing.

It's good to see Cuz and Slim doing so good and it warms the heart to see Boomer holding up his end of the deal...that's an old dog's dream to live to the max and do what he loves to do...good stuff for sure.

Your description of the conditions and what it was like to get that nice Tom that you had pictured in the text message, makes it almost like I'm there...I still don't know how you guys hold up under those kinds of conditions but I guess that's what makes it so darned addictive...there's nothing like it that I've experienced up to this point in my life.

One of these days I'm gonna try and make a return trip just to visit you all and see those sights again and I'm hoping that it won't be too much longer.

Badger

I got a text from Bret H. tonight along with a good picture of a job well done.

Badger struck a track and worked it a long ways through River bottoms and lots of coons. He stuck to the track and bumped several trees that this old boar was checking but checked himself and kept pushing it. He finally drove it up, located and settled into the tree and was solid. Bret says that there was a possum in the next tree over but Badger was treed solid with this old boar...

This is Badger and the result of a good hunt tonight...

Badger is by way of Moose and Leinie. He's a young male that is learning his business a step at a time because of bred in ability but also the dedication of a good young hunter who is putting the time on him and letting him get the experience that it takes to finish into a coon dog. Bret has put a lot of alone time on this young dog and it's an investment that's going to pay him back for a long time to come I think.

It's kind of interesting to get this update at the same time I see the pictures that Mark posted of Cuz and Slim and Boomer. Slim is a litter mate to Badger and it's great to see them both moving forward and putting it all together...gotta love it...eh?

Joe and Moe and the little female that was in that litter, along with Max who is also a lion hound and another litter mate are all showing that it pays off to put the right stuff together. Like I said, starting with a good foundation is important but not one of those young hounds would have made anything sitting in the kennel, these folks who are giving them the chance to learn and are great examples of what it takes to make a dog.

Nice cat

That's a nice Tom and it looks like a happy camper holding him up.

I enjoyed the story about how it all came about but it still makes me shake my head sometimes when you describe wading through thigh and waist deep snow to make it to a tree.

When I make it back...they're going to have to be a lot closer to the trail before I wade through anything

Tom, I wonder if they are using you and I to decribe waist deep snow or are they taller? lol I am like you, I don't think I could wallow that far in deep snow. Last year we had a good drifting blizzard and I wallowed out to the machine shed to get the tractor and was wore out by the time I got there.

Yes sir...that's what I'm telling you.

It was a pretty good cross and although none are 2 years old yet, it seems they've been around forever. When these pups are mature adults, I'd bet they'll be pretty nice hounds.

Badger

I'd like to congratulate Bret Hendricks and Badger for their 3rd place cast win last night.

Badger...

Everything has to start with a first step and I think it's great that Badger was able to get a cast win in his first or second competition hunt. Any of us that has ever been in competition knows that it's a matter of putting them in there and then letting the chips fall where they may. There's always plenty that can go wrong but there are good nights that end up being more frequent than the bad nights as your dog gets better and better with age, maturity and experience.

Congratulations Bret, that's a nice first step.

Twister

Adam Layne sent me a short video of a nice female he calls Twister...

I really appreciated this video because Twister is one of the two last pups produced by Dual Gr. Ch. PR T-Top Rabble Rouser. She just turned 3 years old and has pups from one litter on the ground...

This is a pup out of Twister and a nice Nt. Ch. male that Adam owns called Hank...treed at the end of a drag trail...

I can't remember how Hank is bred or the female that they brought to mate to old Rabble Rouser 3 years ago...I've asked Adam for that info and I'll update this when I get it. I guess that the other female mate to Twister is doing pretty good too and both might see the hunts in the near future. Keep your eyes open for pups from these two females because it looks like they might have something special to offer.
