These questions may seem trival but I have never been coyote hunting w/hounds.

Are most of the hounds running walkers or do you use blueticks,redbones,etc?

Also,do they sight hunt like greyhounds or do you just dump em like coonhunting and they go trail up a yote and jump him?

we hunt coyotes in thick woods-- northeast vt --- speed isnt real hi priority--can do good with coonhound type dog --any dog that --doesnt loose and barks steady-- - --they seem to make smaller circles --- most are shot ahead of dogs and not caught --in decent snow we bay alot of them

we almost never cast dogs-- find a track in snow and put them on-- cold trail it up


different sport than it is in more open country -

some real coyote hunters would probably laugh at us -- but its what works here--


no site chases here --- unless dog is a few feet from them --- lol - it has always amazed me how a medium speed dog that doesnt loose can catch a coyote -- and a fast one that makes mistakes doesnt catch any --sometimes gotta go slow to go fast lol

ive used some real fast foxhound type dogs too- ive seen a very few that were fast and didnt loose -- kinda rare- its kinda nasty conditions here in winter - also there more posted land and those slower dogs a little easier to keep in the places we are suposed to be hunting lol

ya i agree with pete, we sometimes get a bay up but not many, sometimes if u get too fast a dog the yotes that dont want to fight will take off and be long gone, now my hunting buddy uses running walkers and we kill alot infront of them, but me , my relative grant, and my 2nd cousin all use plotts, they work fantabulous lmao and if u do get into a bayup, that yote aint goin to far, it can get pretty nasty but the plotts if they dont kill it they put a mean hurtin on them.

Ty for the replies.
West of here is alot of open land and folks have greyhounds over there.
East of here is lots of timer,briar thickets,etc..Thats where I have permission to coon hunt.
Anyway,just looking to learn more about the sport.
Pictures would be nice if anyone wants to share them.

I live in south central Iowa. We have alot of timbers with pastures around them and open bean and corn fields here. I use mainly runnin walkers and black n tans. We are a little different then the other guys. We normaly bay them and the dogs kill them. The rest are shot in front of the dogs. We cast tehm on tracks first thing in the mornin, then we usually will just cut them loose like a coonhound and let them find one on there own. It really just depends on the dog.

ur dogs must be good, ive never heard of our dogs catching and stretching a yote without any shot in it, they normally dont bay, or if they do they break when the dogs try and fight, im breeding some more speed and grit into my dogs next year or i hope 2, maybe then i wont need a gun but like i said i dont want rocket speed because if a yote dont want to bay hes not going to and i dont want to drive all over hells half acre trying to catch the dogs lol. how many dogs do u usually run if u are letting them kill the coyote?

It totally depends on the race. Most of the time there is 4 to 6 in there. We have alot of brush piles and square mile sections so it is not to hard to cut them off. I have friends that have the speed dogs, I just own the start dogs and kill dogs. The yellow and white walker in the picture is one of the best I have ever owned. He is slow but will fight by himself or with company and will hunt till he gets one jumped. I have 5 of my own and they will find a new home if they wont fight or cant jump one on their own.

oh i c how u do it, we just leave the dogs on start to finish, unless we are trying to get a pup in, or if its ruff conditions and the other dog needs a hand, but i see what you mean now, i was going to say u must have SUPER DOGS if they got the wind to run catch and fight, but ur dogs still do look good. how many kill dogs do u put on at a time?

jake-- a fast running type dog ( i hate to call a coyote dog a foxhound) is a whole nother category of speed --very
fastest tree dogs ive seen might equal medium speed foxhounds

and thats for a few hours-- the foxhound will do it days in a row

those foxhounds have been bred for speed- lot of coyote dogs may have a touch of greyhound or stag hound in them--

the best ones ive seen could run a track and just make your hair stand on end to see it-

BUT


this is what ive seen most fast type coyote dogs do- i realize that these werent best hounds-- nobody solld me their best--



make a loss and find them 5 miles away in a few minutes--- they are just geared different --
lot of them run heads up so much that they just refuse to put their heads down and work out a loss --
they will lose track every time it goes down a road or snowmobile trail or across a lake -any time it gets a little bit tough running--

they dont cold trail much -
more apt to ram around till they jump one --and if they make a loss they ram till they hit another fresh track-

lot of times coyote will make small circles in a thicket and confuse those real speed demons
we just call them crazy pen dogs


lol --all about speed , no nose-=


i like hounds-- -- no nose it isnt a hound ---





i cant say all are like that i- best ive seen were best track dogs ive seen of any kind of dogs - and i aprecciate a good fast dog--


man this stuff can be tough to put into words - lol

what i have seen is guys with speed dogs would sell a slower dog pretty reasonable-- and this slow dog is a very usaeble dog by himself or with another like him --



best slow dogs ive seen could bay coyotes in snow on a regular basis -


they did that by not making many losses - and thats the coyote dog i like best because i can keep track of hunt with less help- i spend more time listening and less time beeping-



lol - i dont want to start a fight with speed dog guys -- just trying to explain

i have hunted alot with fast dogs and thats fun too-

i started coyote hunting in vermont when it was a brand new thing-25 years ago before that we didnt have coyotes -
-

went thru a lot of trial and error -

mostly error -
i had some fox hounds i tried to switch to coyote and they didnt have the guts for it --
tried a lot of foxhounds and some coon hounds that wouldnt tackle a coyote--

when coyote stopped the hunt was over--

after that was able to buy some coyote hounds-
they were for sale because they werent top speed-

i still remember the first time we had dogs actually kill a coyote that hadnt been shot at -- wow we were in shock- lol once had one good dog it never seemed to be a big problem again--
one dog learns from the other

i had a buddy got a couple coyotes most days hunting a couple small farms -- had a stubbly lil plott - that barked every breath-- loud -- never used tracking equipment- just 2-3 guys - and that impressed me -- its possible to run a coyote several hours with 2-3 guys and somebody can hear the dog at all times-- wow that can be fun--- and i think theres a lot of places where this can be done--

ive had fast dogs straightline a coyote for ten miles-
worse that that ive seen them straightline up a skiddoo trail almost that far with no track --

not sure which is worse lol



i dont even own a coyote hound now but i hit it pretty hard for 15 years- and still go sometimes with my buddys --

any kind of hounds and any kind of game is good with me

Lol I agree. I love to hunt but only if a hound is involved,or a rock solid pointer : )

Very informative post and its well apreciated.
Im learning but am now worried about the amount of ground they cover! It would be hard to get permession to hunt 10 miles.
Guess as long as I have permession where I cut em....

We have people around here that hunt pen dogs also. Cant stand them! We have hunting hounds. We like to hear them talk and run. They have to have their nose on the ground run at a decent speed and bark a lot. The most sections we have ever crossed is 3. Most of the time they stay in the section that we bump them in. We normally like to have at least 2 kill dogs in the fight. We might only dump one if there is a couple dogs that will fight in the pack. I have seen a lot of dogs that would fight but couldnt kill a coyote to save themselves. Up here you 3 things to hunt coyotes. 1. A good jump dog that can hunt one for himself. 2. A real good track dog that will pack up. 3. A good kill dog to finish the race.

pete i know what u mean about them **** speed dogs lol, my buddy has running walkers, they are good dogs but they go lol, i like my plotts, we never really get a bay up with the plotts unless it is deep snow, or its only one dog, it usually doesnt last long tho, we mostly get the bayups to tell u the truth with the running walkers lol because they stand back and just bark, our plotts keep going after them and the coyote usually has a moment to catch a breath, but man if we get some shot in them and them brindle friggen things get a hold of them like one on each end, wow. but ya if u have the track dogs and the kill dogs on a yote he should be toast if they circle him, like i said we run the same dogs start to finish and never more then 3 dogs, i dont care who says what it takes a **** good dog to take on a good healthy yote buy themselves with not another dog insite, lol i have a lab that will tho.

ust to yot hunt with a freand all over his dogs cought 7 out of every 10 they ran and he huntted yots all his life at least huntted yout dogs 60 plus years,,and red fox but dogs seldem cought the red fox,,it would hade took a verry huge barn to hold just a few of him tropheys,,and most of them could kill a yoat by its sealf,,and they was verry fast they ran with there noise to the ground,,and they could run a red fox 3 days and nights and seldom made a loose but withen 3 minutes or less they was movining him just as fast,his dogs was fox walkers and he had black and tan dogs also he called fox walkers,,,and some was limon pited also in culler,i went to white clowd canss on the newbraska border,,he got close to all the tropheys and 1 for travling so fare to hunt and 1 becals he was the oldest huntter to enter the hunt,they turned loose over 125 dogs at a time and they ran strung out all day,,they cought all the game they ran but 1 buck deer it went to a river and got away,,every few minutes they cought a yot deer coon or smothing,,that was a heck of a hunt we stayed 10 dayes after the hunt was over to hunt moore,,

i run redbones on yotes, and we do catch quite a few every year. i also run in bigger wooded areas and prefer a hound with alot of mouth and and a colder nose. i only have 1 kill dog, he`s the one on the right. he can and will kill a yote on his own, but he does pay the price for it. that was my plott, but i sold her.

I been hunting yotes with dogs about ten years . I love it. I have runing walkers, they are track runing dogs. I have seen one dog that kill a yote by him self. Lightfoot Deacon.

i hunt with my buddy that has plotts that start and finish the show when he puts down on a cold track someone better get in there and follow or there will be parts of the coyote every where and it is almost always me going in there we have big blocks that very from 2x4 to 5x8 miles also he has a super fast plott that will not lose a track most of the time we dont get to shoot the coyote the dogs end it themselves

I have a question for you guys that run tree hounds. I have 2 Walkers that are just started & I am learning...... How many dogs do you have to put on the ground to have a good hunt? I am going to be hunting mostly wooded areas, If no one with hounds goes with me, can I get by with only 2 hounds on the ground?

when i hunt by myself, i always just run 1 hound. it seems to keep them from straight lining out of the area. my home site is below, it`s mostly a yote hunting site. it might be able to help you out.

I have been running coyotes for several years now and it has become my passion to have hounds that can jump, track, and run down, then proceed to kill a coyote when they catch him. The coyotes I kill have not been shot-ALL RUN TO CATCH. I have hounds that are fast-and I mean fast! These hounds do not make very many loses and only a small percentage of the yotes escape. If you are trying to catch a coyote it only seems to me the harder you can push your game the faster you will catch it. Keeping the pressure on at times until the catch has been the key for me, and a hound has to be able to use his nose at these speeds. Race lengths do vary depending on the coyote and the cover they are running in, tracking conditions ect. We catch several coyotes a day here and have a ball doing it. I always say a pic is worth a thousand words-so check out my pics if want.

i think we killed 21 this year, all running with the dogs, lol we had one yote hunt that ended up in a coon hunt earlier, well its better then a deer hunt lmao, there wasnt any yotes in this little marsh so my pup went off and caught a coon just for fun i guess. we skin and stretch all the pelts and then ship them to northbay, that is our fur auction place. i love just catchin stuff with the dogs and skinning it out, its pretty satisfying.

How many times a year are you unable to get a yote up & moving? I am new to the sport & this is my biggest concern. I have a couple of young hounds & plan on walking sections with them, on days where its hard to find a track. Looking for all info I can get ahold of right now.
